Are we a cult?

I keep reading that sex realists, of which I am one, are a cult. Perhaps a genderist could be so kind as to explain what a cult is, and why we qualify. Sometimes one of us calls them a cult too. Who has a better case, hmmm?

It’s DARVO. We have noted certain cult-like aspects to gender ideology, which we have pointed out, only to have the accusation thrown back at us, despite the complete lack of any evidence to back up the claim.

If this helps at all.
I've now read multiple times from the Be Kind crowd that trans was accepted in the past before JKR and Musk radicalised TERFery from niche culture war to full on right wing bigotry.
Yes, just a couple of decades ago, women welcomed trans women in, men had no objections.
Not always plain sailing, but the arrow of history on minorities meant that we were becoming more and more understanding, as seen by the legalisation of same sex marriage and Pride becoming mainstream.
And then the backlash started, Brexit to Trump to Farage to the demonization of Stonewall, and what was fast minimizing stigmatization of trans escalated the other way.
...a totally bogus rewriting of history, but explains why it's GC and TERFs that are seen as the cult, that the silent majority were/are totally cool with the trans narrative,

Wishesandhorses · 11/08/2026 11:25

Seriously, you could intentionally share a word here on Monday, repeat it a lot, and by Friday it's been acquired and DARVOed by activists as the New Thing to Say. It's been done. (I particularly enjoyed 'coy' week.)

The term cult is one with a meaning and a clear definition, and a list of points to identify it. Easily Googled. You'd need a very big crowbar to get women wanting and needing to retain sex based rights and protections in law to fit under any of them. (Transactivism on the other hand ticks a whole lot more boxes).

So no. It's just more nonsense.

SidewaysOtter · 11/08/2026 11:41

Are we a cult?

No.

Rightsraptor · 11/08/2026 11:41

Of course we aren't.

Cults make leaving them very difficult for one thing. We don't do that, we come & go at will. We don't have a 'leader', despite what they think. True we have people who are at the fore, in the public eye but that doesn't make them leaders.

I'm not surprised that they call us that because they also call people who disagree with them Nazis and Fascists, so what can we expect? They have no concept of reality.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 11/08/2026 11:53

No, we're 51% of the human race, as has been mentioned above, observations made on here are picked up and mirrored back by the imitators. They don't have an original thought in their heads, so they have to steal ideas from others, just like the men who imitate woman and try to steal their single sex spaces, their sports, their accolades.

FrippEnos · 11/08/2026 11:53

A cult is a group that allows no free thinking or discussion.
Only one side of this has #nodebate and cancels people for not agreeing with them.
Also only one side has felt the need to rewrite history, mis-interpret and then try to destroy those that disagree with it.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 11/08/2026 12:14

There's certainly a cult on this board, but it's around the worship of Tunnocks Tea Cakes rather than anything else.

MarieDeGournay · 11/08/2026 12:34

TRA posters on here don't seem to be able to cope with the fact that yes, 99.something% of other posters on here believe that human sex is immutable and binary.

We believe it because it is a provable scientific fact.

Does 99.something% of people believing that the earth goes around the sun, and not vice versa, make heliocentrism a cult too?

"No, we're 51% of the human race"

You making a false statement, possibly intentionally in an effort to convince yourself.

Women are 51% of the human race.
GC cultists are not 100% of women.

The overwhelming majority of us do not have a problem with trans-women, do not slavishly idolise a deranged billionaire, and do not exclusively inhabit echo-chambers like this particular sub-forum in the, otherwise rational, MN fora.

A merest glance at the quality of some of the posts that react to anyone espousing pro-trans statements here is as illuminating as it is depressing (but then, given such posts are reactionary in every sense of the word, I'm not surprised).

Are you a cult? Depending on your definition, I'd say so; there are certainly strong cult-like aspects (such as the anti-TRA whataboutery that's going to follow this post), and there is certainly a tribalistic mindset that is vehemently and aggressively against anyone who steps outside the narrow view that pervades here in spades.

The claim you speak for, are representative of, or even acting in the interests of, all women as as laughable as it is untrue.
The rest of us don't agree with you. We don't even especially like you. And we are sure as hell unhappy that your particular brand of rabid pitchfork waving reflects very badly on real feminists and makes it much, much harder to get our views and opinions listened to.

PriOn1 · 11/08/2026 12:42

“your particular brand of rabid pitchfork waving reflects very badly on real feminists and makes it much, much harder to get our views and opinions listened to”

Ooh! Is this going to be the next accusation? Because women are fighting for the right to retain single sex spaces and for it to be acknowledged that men are not women, all feminism is going to fail and it will be All Our Fault!

CassOle · 11/08/2026 12:42

I know that I'm not in a cult as I am free to change my mind at any point.

So far, no evidence has been shown to me that demonstrates that a mammal (I'm keeping it wider than just human beings here on purpose) has actually changed sex, but if it ever happens, I can easily change my stance from 'mammals cannot change sex' to 'mammals can change sex'.

This made me laugh. It's so true. The appropriated expressions, the wording and formulations.
'Feminist-identifying transphobes' was a recent one.
'Cult' has been peppered all over this board in the last few days by one of the most recent visitors.
Some people really have no imagination!

We should put bets on what will be appropriated next.

Helleofabore · 11/08/2026 12:45

I think it is usually projection from someone who uses it to describe those who believe that sex is immutable and that single sex provisions are based on sex and not gender.

Because those people have nothing but emotional manipulation left. Describing a group of very different subgroups with different motivations where discussion constantly is undertaken as a ‘cult’ is never accurate.

But hey… if someone is desperately concerned about themselves being on TRSOH or are so heavily invested and all they have to argue with is emotional reasoning and manipulative tactics.

Considering WPATH has admitted they have just ‘opinions’ and so many organisations have now clarified that male people are not ‘female’ for the purpose of female single sex provisions … there is no evidence that they can use except emotional manipulation

A cult is people with belief centred on extreme, intense devotion to a person, idea, or object.

I wouldn't say all sex realists are because it depends upon the individual & how much their lives are wrapped up in it just like any other belief system. But as a long time lurker, I suspect quite a few on this forum fit the description by the irrationality in their responses.

LlynTegid · 11/08/2026 12:56

I don't call advocating women's safety and fair competition in sport a cult. Not in any language.

I don't call wanting safety for transgender people a cult either.

Yabbut you gotta admit there's also a 'gametal' worship 'vibe' happening not unlike pro lifers & their obsessive 'fetal' worship.
