“Sex is more complicated than you think”

Minor rant, not sure if it’s the right place, but oh my days, the perpetual gotchas of the SRY and embryos starting off female and the whataboutery of intersex (never DSD)
If it wasn’t unladylike I’d hit something

Given the number of people who appear to find the concept of two sexes so endlessly confusing and terribly complex it is astonishing that the human race hasn't died out.

Against all odds we seemed to have managed to work out how to reproduce even before we had “primary school biology”.

"Some people have genetic conditions therefore Dave from Accounts can come into work dressed like a porn star"

InSlovakiaTheCapitalOfCourseIsBratislava · 10/08/2026 14:47

My primary school biology was mostly about caterpillars turning into butterflies
No idea how I managed to have a baby
Also chicks in an incubator - hence eggs cracking?

You must just be one of the lucky ones who accidentally bumped into a member of the opposite sex.

MagpiePi · 10/08/2026 14:50

How do non-binaries and gender fluids ever find an opposite?

Boiledbeetle · 10/08/2026 14:51

“Sex is more complicated than you think”

Only if you're doing it wrong.

Lins77 · 10/08/2026 14:53

Wasn't it the Sandie Peggie case which was rife with "nobody really knows what sex they are" nonsense.

I mean, I'm confident I'm a woman. BUT MAYBE I'M NOT??!! 😱

Justme56 · 10/08/2026 14:53

Bizarrely they all seem to know which puberty they are trying to block when it comes to PBs.

GreyskySexRealistsky · 10/08/2026 14:53

...and which sex they are when it comes to wanting to be the other one

Judging from the photos of them demonstrating at various women related rallies... Smell probably.

Do you think saying that will get me sent to HR?
So. Tempted.

Kirsty Blackman MSP memorably said that she “hadn’t a clue” what her chromosomes were.

Ms Blackman has, I believe, given birth to two children, so you would think that would help with the necessary deductions.

It would have been out my mouth before my brain had even registered!

I think she guessed at XY first!

Where do avocados come into it? I seem to have missed that one!

Well you know, complicated stuff. She can hardly be blamed. After all who could expect elected politicians to do a bit of reading before speaking in parliamentary debates?

Correction: she’s an MP not an MSP

quixote9 · 10/08/2026 15:12

I get even more annoyed when they drag biologists into it. It's like everything else in biology: the answer is "it depends."

Are you talking about vertebrate mammals? Genetic basics are very simple. XX or XY. End of story. Various edge conditions make no difference to that any more than issues in limb development change the basic point that humans have two legs. Phenotypes? Ah well, that can get interesting. But that also does not support a "born that way" argument.

Are you talking about some fungi? Yes, some of them have dozens of mating strains with different levels of compatibility. Oh, you're not talking about fungi? Then that's irrelevant.

Etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. Ad infinitum et nauseam.

I'm pretty sure one of the senior nurses claimed not to know her own sex.

Avocado trees undertake daily sex switching (protogynous dichogamy).

It’s a very persuasive argument. 😳

We got a film of a worm mating with itself. One end male, one female.

No wonder we got confused.

Error404FucksNotFound · 10/08/2026 15:19

Conjoined twins doesnt mean the number of heads it is normal for a human to have is 1 or 2.

Intersex is an example of an abnormality during development.

Very persuasive for avocadoes! 😆
