Minor rant, not sure if it’s the right place, but oh my days, the perpetual gotchas of the SRY and embryos starting off female and the whataboutery of intersex (never DSD)

Yes: if they can be trans without having to take puberty blockers or hormones, far less have surgery, that's a vast plus.

Following in the footsteps of Aristotle and the other ancient Greeks, who thought Man was the correct and perfect form of human development and Woman was what you got if the fetus failed to develop properly, it was thought until very recently that a fetus became male if the SRY gene fired up the male pathway and female just sort of happened if there was no SRY to divert development to the male pathway.

It's now known (from a discovery considerably newer than Jurassic Park) that both developmental pathways have a trigger, and differentiating into female is an active rather than a passive process.

It was also thought that the embryo was in the blank slate/default female state for the first 6 weeks, with no difference (apart from not-yet-active genes) between male and female embryos until visible formation of the cells that would form the reproductive system. Again, wrong - we now know that different developmental signals start to be sent - and acted on - within a few hours of fertilisation.

Quite a few people in the UK who have a DSD do use the term intersex.

Also the PP only has one body.

I've yet to meet any. Only ever heard intersex used by trans activists to serve their agenda.

I have just been renewing my French residency online & was offered the choice of homme ou femme for my sex. No hint of NB or Prefer Not To Say just unambiguously male or female.

Which is how it should be for sex - because there are literally only 2 options. Male or female.

Gender? Meh - knock yourself out with whatever reductive nonsense you choose for yourself. A free text box will allow you to be as creative as you like.

This batshittery is everywhere and when you suggest that sex is binary and immutable you get a shed load of abuse and the suggestion you read something by 'Julia' Serano on ROGD - which he could not disprove btw.
'Intersex' is also a favourite. I am tired of being told this is the preferred term used by 'intersex' people - that no such people exist and that we are talking about sex-linked DSDs is called bigotry.
The SRY gene also gets trotted out with the trope that all embryos start off female (this was thought to be the case in the 80s and I can't remember why, since sex is decided at conception - where else could it be decided?). Try telling the poster that the SRY gene is a lightswitch on the Y chromosome and you are called a retard who is relying on grade 8 biology - so at least one can guess the origin of the nutjob railing at you. It's quicker to block them than argue because arguing is pointless.

Two reasons.

Aristotlian sexism. Early embryos are undifferentiated. This means the male ones don't have penises and testes. It also means the female ones don't have ovaries and wombs, but that's not relevant because any human without a penis is not a man. Anyone who isn't a man (or not enough of a man) is a woman. Because male is the perfect human and 'women' is everyone else.

And the slightly more scientific reason that the SRY gene was known to be an active trigger for the development of the Wolffian duct, and therefore male sexual structures. It was thought (possibly because of Aristotlian sexism) that there was no similar trigger for Mullerian development and it just happened by default in the absence of an SRY trigger.

Embryology blows my mind.
