Minor rant, not sure if it’s the right place, but oh my days, the perpetual gotchas of the SRY and embryos starting off female and the whataboutery of intersex (never DSD)
If it wasn’t unladylike I’d hit something

Don't forget the seahorse, they were very popular at one time, they seem to have fallen out of fashion now, which is a shame, I like seahorse.😍

Yeah, I miss them. Even the clownfish seem to have taken a back seat. I guess avocados are hogging the spotlight now. I need to move with the times.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/08/2026 15:25

I did have a brief go at trying to persuade them to switch to the European pond turtle as a point of argument, but no dice.

I'm pretty sure one of the senior nurses claimed not to know her own sex.

It wasn't a nurse, it was Isla Bumba, of course she knew Theo Upton was a woman though.

NotMyRealAccount · 10/08/2026 15:30

None of the interesting peripheral details about sex is relevant to the prevailing issue of whopping lumps of adult men trying to force their way into women's spaces. There's nothing complicated about what those men are.

Jaxhog · 10/08/2026 15:31

MagpiePi · 10/08/2026 14:49

Also something, something clownfish and mumble, mumble, avocados

If your education was about Clownfish and Avocados, no wonder you're confused! I haven't been able to watch the Nemo films since finding out about their 'unusual' approach. Fortunately, humans aren't like that, unless you talk to the trans community. Although I don't think Clownfish and Avocados get to choose.

BumblebeesandPaperbags · 10/08/2026 15:15

Avocado trees undertake daily sex switching (protogynous dichogamy).

It’s a very persuasive argument. 😳

That's fascinating! I will look it up. Thanks.

None of the men who claim sex is complicated are going to the doctor to check why they aren't having a period.

LGBQTree?

Great. Now I'm singing that to the 54321 tune.

Well you know, complicated stuff. She can hardly be blamed. After all who could expect elected politicians to do a bit of reading before speaking in parliamentary debates?

Correction: she’s an MP not an MSP

Edited

More frighteningly she was studying for a medical degree before she dropped out

tinderboxdry · 10/08/2026 15:35

I was always confused about what 'the birds and the bees' had to do with sex. Now it seems to be 'the fish and the trees'.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 10/08/2026 15:37

What about the platypus? They are egg laying mammals. That should mean we can lay eggs...

SodThisHeadache · 10/08/2026 15:39

I was watching the last series of Clarkson's Farm, and they were breeding snails (not for eating; for face cream). Dirty bastards (the snails) have both sets of 'undercarriage'.

I think this proves that men can use women's changing rooms

WallaceinAnderland · 10/08/2026 15:40

Sex, as in male and female, is not complicated. If there were a third, fourth or fifth sex, we would know about it.

That is probably the most convincing argument I've heard so far.

I'm sold.

Let the men in.

I had the misfortune to be in a meeting with IB once - she's as thick in RL as you'd think her to be. Believes herself to be correct in everything she says though - and I couldn't resist having a veiled dig. It was very satisfying.

SodThisHeadache · 10/08/2026 15:43

Ooooh! Islalalalabumba

Heggettypeg · 10/08/2026 15:44

Slipper limpets can also change sex. They live in stacks. If the females die, one of the males becomes a female.
However, they are classed as an "invasive species" in the UK, so perhaps they would have a PR problem as a trans icon.

I thort so.

My BIL who is a Paediatric Intensive Care nurse tried to school me on how complicated sex is once, to argue for trans rights. He turned out to be a dick in other ways too.

I have always felt like the combination of small gametes but also carries the babies seemed like an excellent arrangement.

😂 Clearly she wasn't a good fit for medicine.

I always have argued that Mermaids was a terrible name for a trans organisation.

In the original fairytale, in order to become something that she is not, and grow legs, the Little Mermaid endures the paid of treading on knives when she tries to walk or dance, and cannot talk or sing because she loses her tongue. Another woman who can woo the prince with her singing gets to marry him, and the LM dies.

What a great allegory!

Judging from the photos of them demonstrating at various women related rallies... Smell probably.

“Sex is more complicated than you think”

Only if you're doing it wrong.

That was my first thought. Or you have particularly, erm, exotic tastes, which might explain the avocado, Ballad of Barry and Freda-style.

I love seahorses, and also: seahorses are horses, so they do prove that wearing a dress makes you a woman.
