Minor rant, not sure if it’s the right place, but oh my days, the perpetual gotchas of the SRY and embryos starting off female and the whataboutery of intersex (never DSD)
If it wasn’t unladylike I’d hit something

Slipper limpets can also change sex. They live in stacks. If the females die, one of the males becomes a female.
However, they are classed as an "invasive species" in the UK, so perhaps they would have a PR problem as a trans icon.

Don't forget the oysters, they also change sex depending on the water temperature and food supply, apparently.

More frighteningly she was studying for a medical degree before she dropped out

It’s very hard to think of quite what to say to that revelation…

I do try so hard to remain polite on MN, but you are testing me…

I'm not quite sure what this thread is about but my karyotype is XO as I have a deletion on my second chromosome. I am biologically not typical of the genetics of either gender.

Also something, something clownfish and mumble, mumble, avocados

And crocodiles!

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 10/08/2026 15:58

Grrrr. And now I have "beat me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly" as an ear worm!

Sorry - as you were....

XO is usually Turners Syndrome, I believe (please do correct me if I’m wrong?)

So you are a special type of female, but still female?

If by "either gender" you mean "either sex" you are acknowledging the existence of two sexes, right?

The Turner Syndrome Society:

https://www.tss.org.uk/index.php/facts/what-is-ts

Turner Syndrome (TS) is a chromosome abnormality affecting only females, caused by the complete or partial deletion of the X chromosome. The incidence of TS is approximately 1:2000 live female births.

What is TS?

A group of TS girls. The following description of Turner Syndrome (TS) and explanation of some of the issues involved in living with Turner syndrome are not definitive and a doctor or endocrine specialist should always be consulted whenever a diagnos...

Probably?

Yeah there are two genders and sexes

SodThisHeadache · 10/08/2026 16:11

@Kate8889 When you say "probably?", what do you mean?

MsGreying · 10/08/2026 16:12

BumblebeesandPaperbags · 10/08/2026 15:15

Avocado trees undertake daily sex switching (protogynous dichogamy).

It’s a very persuasive argument. 😳

It's the flowers.
Each individual flower opens twice over a two-day cycle—acting first as a female and then as a male.

Flowers are complicated things. We don't allow them to drive a car or own property though.

SodThisHeadache · 10/08/2026 16:14

I loved studying plants at "A" level biology. They are underrated IMO.

Part of me wishes I'd studied Botany at University. I may yet do an evening class...

So endocrinologists and geneticists disagree on whether Turner Syndrome is an intersex condition. Personally I consider myself a woman.

backformoreofthesame · 10/08/2026 16:23

XO- so missing an X which is considered a female who is likely to have reproductive problems ?
edit / so the doctors agree with you thinking you are female

all the DSDs seem to be described as affecting a male or affecting a female

SirChenjins · 10/08/2026 16:24

Kate8889 · 10/08/2026 16:09

Yeah there are two genders and sexes

No - more than 2 genders, whereas only 2 sexes.

SodThisHeadache · 10/08/2026 16:25

@Kate8889 Are you in the UK? didn't think the term 'intersex' was used anymore because it implies something that is not at all accurate - people with Turner's aren't 'between' sexes'

You are female, albeit with some aspects of your body that have developed differently to other females - that means you are a woman, surely?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 10/08/2026 16:28

SirChenjins · 10/08/2026 16:24

No - more than 2 genders, whereas only 2 sexes.

No - 2 sexes each with a corresponding gender, all other 'genders' are made bollocks.

Unless you count the adolescent genders separately, then there are 4, or one and a half for each sex. 😂

I have just googled avocado flowers, pretty!

But yes, not really appropriate driving licence holders.

Avocadeers or possibly Avocadstags - it really is complicated isn’t it?! 🤣

Edited

I'm happy for people to choose whatever gender they want from the myriad of meaningless options if that's what keeps them happy - it bothers me none. Sex is a completely different matter though - you're male or female, man or woman. That's the legal and biological basis that underpins everything. I don't want to see any medical form that asks me for my gender, for example - that's meaningless bollocks.

MagpiePi · 10/08/2026 16:37

Heggettypeg · 10/08/2026 15:04

Where do avocados come into it? I seem to have missed that one!

Something to do with the same plant can have both male and female parts? I’m not really sure (and cba to look it up) but it’s VeRy cOmPliCaTeD sCiEnCe and is why men have to go to women’s prisons if they wear leggings and a bad wig.

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 10/08/2026 16:39

Or even a good wig. But they never seem to.

Bizarrely they all seem to know which puberty they are trying to block when it comes to PBs.

Right! How does that work?? Sex is all very mysterious but gender identity is crystal clear hmmmmm.
