Started because a thread on Girlguiding was getting too off topic.

I just skipped to the end to say, no they're not they're really, really not.

When the number of women killed at the hands of men starts declining, and I see as much activism to stop viloemce against women and girls, then I’ll reconsider my position.

For now, its nope. Safe spaces for women remains a priority

Even when no women are killed or attacked by men, men still won't be women and women will still have rights to single sex spaces.

You know this guy isn't a woman because he truly has no idea how utterly stereotypically male he sounds as he orders us to join and affirm his delusion and abandon ourselves to his wants. Is it the Butterfly guy?

NotAtMyAge · Yesterday 14:36

Of course they aren't. Trans means they have to be the opposite sex from the one they try to present as. They are simply trans-identifying men and no men have the right to access women's spaces.

I think "trans woman" is a descriptor in itself - they wish to move from living their life as a man to living as a woman.

As to what that entails, yes I think that requires more than wearing lipstick (if that's your inference?). And that's where long-term psychological assessment, hormonal & surgical treatment, living for a defined period of years as the opposite sex etc before full transitioning, come into play.

If someone born male proceeds to, for instance, take hormones/have breast implants, but chooses to retain their lower genitalia permanently, then that's absolutely fine. But strictly speaking I think they are choosing to be what equates outwardly as hermaphrodite, not a trans woman.

Your distinction is not acceptable according to the European Court of Human Rights, so it's rather academic.

You cannot insist that status must depend on treatment that would restrict fertility.

Personally, I also think that it's unethical to encourage treatment that has an uncertain outcome and efficacy.

Think OP is somewhat late to the programme! OP - you need the latest edition of the TRA handbook. Everything you’ve said was in edition 1 which they have since revised. HTH

He still thinks you have to have gender dysphoria to be transgender. Bless his little cotton socks.

Verv · Yesterday 14:38

Also skipped to the end to say that no, they are not.
They are invariably the worst kind of men.

No penises in women only spaces. It's not hard.

I sincerely hope not.

They are called women, much like women who were assigned female at birth are cisgender women. Trans is just an adjective

What’s a cisgender woman?

ThatCyanCat · Yesterday 14:39

Even by TRA standards, I have to say this is all really outdated. Has he perhaps been asleep for the last year and a half?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · Yesterday 14:39

@user08101988 - if you take samples from a man’s brain and a trans woman’s brain, they will both be genetically male. XY chromosomes. Unchanging.

Helleofabore · Yesterday 14:40

This thread is very interesting. Yet it feels like Déjà vu.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · Yesterday 14:40

I think it identifies as an entirely new topic, @Helleofabore.

New to the programme I think. He must be to think he has any chance of coming out on top on here.

That's why their called TRANS woman because they make the transition from male to female don't be bloody idiotic!!!

Not by me they aren’t, because they are men.

I appreciate the question. I am a trans-fem non-binary person. This means, while I was AMAB, I mostly see myself aligned with femininity. However, I do not see myself within the binary of gender, so that's why I use those pronouns

So in other (normal) words, you're a man.

banmusk · Yesterday 14:41

When it comes to competitive sports in particular the men who believes themselves to be women are men who were unable to succeed in men's sports. They resort to pretending they're women in order to achieve the success they think they deserve.

I have a study about manly man brains and frilly lady brains!

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10854110/

From the abstract

I confirm the small effect sizes and pronounced scatter across recent large neuroimaging studies of human sex/gender difference. Based on the sum of data, neuroscientists would be well-advised to take the null hypothesis seriously: that men and women’s brains are fundamentally similar, or “monomorphic”.

This means that any study purporting to say that men who identify as women have women’s brains is probably correct!

Because you cannot tell a manly man brain from a frilly lady brain. Some tiny differences only. Essentially if you’re looking at a brain image, you would need the associated patient information to tell if it is male or female.

Unlike skeletons. Any man identifying as a woman who is buried after death will be identified as a man by his skeleton.

Remembering the null hypothesis when searching for brain sex differences - PMC

Human brain sex differences have fascinated scholars for centuries and become a key focus of neuroscientists since the dawn of MRI. We recently published a major review in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews showing that most male–female brain ...

I said the same to my daughter as we were discussing this yesterday. There are loud voices at either extreme, but the compromises are really simple and those loud voices aren’t interested in it.

Some people don't want sensible solutions, they are born to argue! If more people like us spoke up, what a better place it would be. You are right to teach your kids this approach, its the way to go.

OneDreamyAquaEagle · Yesterday 14:43

If they were real women they wouldn't have the prefix trans, for starters. If they're natal males, they're not real women.

OotontheRandan · Yesterday 14:44

They are biological females due to this study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8955456/

Also, if you think stripping down what women are to their body parts, that's what feminists fought against for years. Now women can get jobs, start bank accounts, own property, and so many more things. This is a very regressive view of what women are.

Gosh, it is almost as if women are real actual humans seeing as they are allowed bank accounts and can get jobs. I mean, it's almost like they are nearly men, isn't it?

Surely feminism was as a result of women being stripped down to their biology, not as a desire to pretend biology doesn't exist? Feminists fought for equality because humans are humans and should have equality. Yet still acknowledge that women's particular biological needs require to be met. Eg maternity leave. Access to toilets. All female shortlists for specific purposes (eg awards and specific roles to ensure equality of representation).

It would be a nice breath of fresh air if @user08101988 argued that they wish to be known as she/they simply because they want to, rather than a complicated stepping outwith the binary (which they assume all other people must be defined within).

HerbertPootle · Yesterday 14:44

What is it that makes them trans op?

If transwomen were actually women then the opposite would also be true, all women would be transwomen. Which we're not, and there'd be no reason to use the word 'trans'.

DearZebra · Yesterday 14:45

Re. The study you quote about male and female brains. It states that ‘The brains of transgender women ranged between cisgender men and cisgender women (albeit still closer to cisgender men)’
in the study, 6 of the trans identifying males were attracted to men (which would in reality classify them as gay men if their wish to be female were taken out of it) and 18 of them were attracted to women.
If you look at the graph, the inclusion of the 6 gay trans identifying males, probably explains the whole thing.
edit - as having more feminine brains and skewing the pattern

Can go on about it till the end of time....and it will always be no.

I am also a trans ally with several trans friends (all MtF), & believe that the change in law regarding toilet access is wrong & humiliating & had not been thought through properly - then or now.

A woman is confronted by a man who says he is a woman in the ladies toilets. Do you not think it is wrong and humiliating for her?

Sandie Peggie, in the middle of a menstrual flood went into the female changing rooms to change her scrubs. There was a man in there who identified as a woman. She tried to wait for him to leave before changing. He asked her why she was waiting. It was as if he wanted to watch her change. How humiliating is that for her?

Women’s single sex spaces are for privacy, safety and dignity.

If men who say they are women want private, safe, dignified places to change or pee, why are they not campaigning for them?

Why are they unhappy with the guidance says they should use spaces available to all which are single use and with a floor to ceiling door?

Edited

Statistically speaking, I think a woman finding herself in women's toilets with a trans woman also present (pre or post law change) is very uncommon - as trans men & women are a tiny % of the population.

And the likelihood of that trans woman "confronting" her even less likely - why do you assume all trans women are confrontational? The trans women I know want to just have a pee & not be hassled - in whatever space they're permitted to use.

You also seem to assume that I think the solution is to revert to what was previously the law. I don't think I do - I think unisex spaces are best. Avoids confusion, confrontation, humiliation, & allows dignity to be preserved for all.

(The Sandy Peggie case is something of an anomaly, & both parties said/did things I disliked/felt uncomfortable with.)
