Interesting, my post has been undeleted, without any pleading on my part, presumably on the grounds that it was merely a throwaway observation that a word can have an alternative meaning, and therefore the derogatory meaning is best not assumed. Perhaps I should have spelled that out fully, as well as checked the various species of loon and their global distribution. Loons, in my limited experience, are inoffensive and rather shy birds, and it is a delight to see one in the wild.

Yep, quine is girl/young woman and loon is boy/young man. He's a daft loon - he's a stupid boy/young man without the common sense he was born with. She's a bonny quine - she's a lovely looking woman, too good for that daft loon.

In Canada when I visited the 1$ coin had a loon (bird) on it and the 2$ something else. The coins were colloquially called loonies and twonies.

I also hear 'loonie' being used as a diminutive, as a term of endearment up in Deeside - at least from speakers over the age of 40, usually those old enough to remember fit galluses are.

I've finally been able to see your post @SirChenjins . I can understand why there was confusion, but it's a totally innocuous term. (In my cheenie* cabinet there's a medal issued "To our retiring loon." [That was a bit of joke on his heidie's part, in that that the loon was going on the pension, but he wisna really that blate.]. [PS Not a good idea to say 'blate' in front of a Russian. It sounds awfa like a bad word.]

I think that the moment that Sturgeon truly jumped the shark was when she referred to herself as "Chief Mammy".

When I first heard it, as someone who's been through pregnancy loss myself I wondered whether it was some kind of weird reaction to that, but it sounded so despotic that I could scarcely believe it - it made me think of personality cults I have known...

In the foreword to her book, JC notes that she was uncomfortable at the sometimes cult-like reaction to Alex Salmond but that things became much worse under Sturgeon - and I think she's right.

*Maybe just an auld-farrent Fife term? I don't remember hearing it in Deeside.

Yep - adding ie to the end of words is very common up there. Mannie, quinnie, loonie, droppie etc etc. I miss hearing it 😊

No. Naebdy can be that thin skinned to actually report a post on the basis of an innocuous dialect word being used.

I'm unsure as to whether the SNP is going to survive the Murrell/Sturgeon mess.

There surely needs to be a clear-out of anyone who parroted the 'Everything is fine' line?

I think it's going to take a long time before the party has a sense of credibility again.

I think they'll survive, they have a core group of loyal followers who will support them no matter what, but their vote share has fallen massively over the years and the murk and ineptitude is becoming more and more apparent. They need a strong leader to clear out the dead wood and underperformers (agree with you there), and stop the party from playing student politics - but Swinney simply isn't the person for the job.

I agree with you about Swinney. So far as I can tell, he only got the leadership again because they simply couldn't think of anyone else. They need someone with a bit more get-up and go.

Thinking about it, Sturgeon was never that charismatic - a great deal of work was put in before she became party leader. There was just no comparison between the early Sturgeon and the woman who swanned onto the stage of conference wearing designer high heels.

I recall being surprised when canvassers offered me 'the opportunity' to have my photograph taken with NS - it was as if they were doing me a favour.

I've already said (possibly on this thread?) that the offer was made when they realised that I was a party member and a secondary school middle manager. This was around the time that our local Labour MP was a recently retired headmaster and the Labour party was playing up the MP's former career as a plus point.

I agree re Swinney - he was the safe pair of hands after a lot of drama and complete incompetence, but the job is beyond him. No real achievements, just more of the same. He does do a good line in facial expressions though - 'outrage' and 'listening intently with hand on face' appear to be his specialties.

I have no doubt that NS came into politics genuinely wanting to make a difference in Scottish politics, but she let her celebrity status go to her head. The establishment pond up here is far too small and cosy - if you weren't in you were out, and dissenters from that celebrity simply weren't tolerated. It's one reason why the country hasn't been able to grow varied ideas and talent.

Spinney epitomises "Buggin's turn". A man who has for sure served his time and outlasted the rest of his cohort seemingly by a strategy consisting largely of passivity and maintaining low charisma.
