It wasn't controversial if you know Doric (I grew up hearing it spoken) but MN must have decided its other meaning was offensive. Shame, it's a lovely dialect of Scots.

I'd like to think of myself as bilingual, but some bits of Doric do defeat me.

I can remember the "Fit like?" response, however: "Chavvin awa!"

I recall we bumped into one of DH's old classmates in Ballater one time:

"Far ye bidin noo?"

"Fife."

"Fit ye daein there?"

"Teachin."

"Teachin?! Bit you were nivver very clever at the squeal!" [I have no idea of the correct Doric spelling."]

The Ballater Arms has gone posh - we used to stop in there on the way back from Glenshee skiing, don't think they'd have us now! A certain Australian actor has bought a house up there - very fancy.

The toy shop responded to visitor demand, I was told - people came looking for them, thanks to the sketch. The original toy shop's no longer there, though - it was combined with the newsagent's and there were no futtrets for sale the last time I looked.

It's all getting very confusing. Various places have changed their name. The Loirston was posh when DH was a bairn, but then became much less so. Then it was taken over by...[name escapes me - Irish firm] and became The Deeside Inn. (I recall DH's horror when they put the cutlery in old syrup tins in order to follow some kind of upmarket trend). Then it became the Balmoral something , but there are two other Balmoral somethings that had the name first.

Apparently, the really posh place is now the Fife Arms in Braemar - they've been getting Judy Dench and all the A-listers staying there. We sometimes stopped there for a coffee, but it's a bit rich for me now.

Our retirement holiday plan had been a static caravan in Ballater, but the deluge put paid to that idea.

I'm not sure whether Byzantium is still open in Ballater? At one point, the 'vintage' section was selling shabby working class houseware to middle-class visitors for silly money. They were selling empty shortbread tins for 20 quid a time.

I was just about to tell you that there are loons (the birds) in the Northern hemisphere when your post got deleted. There is a pair of red throated loons raising chicks on a little lochan not far from my house.

I'm feeling very nostalgic now @WearyAuldWumman ! Yes, Byzantium is still there and the Deeside Inn is now the Balmoral Arms Hotel. I'm also delighted to report that Dee Valley Confectioners is still there - much loved shop from my childhood. The Monaltrie is now flats - DS and I stayed there a couple of years ago on holiday. Further along, the Potarch Hotel (one of my faves years ago and beside the place we would go as teenagers to pose by the river) is now the Potarch Cafe and Restaurant. So many lovely places up there - I feel a holiday coming on actually.

I see 'Deeside', I think Cheshire, 'Doric' has me thinking of columns 😁 but even I've heard of Wings and Joanne Cherry.

To my mind/ear its as much about the lovely thick accent, and sound and breath patterns as individual words. More in the front of the mouth and with tighter cheeks than Glasgow. But looser lipped than Edinburgh.

Joanna does a peculiar thing. She always posts about "Woman and Lesbians" as if they are two different things.

Is she saying that lesbians can be male so she has to seperate them?

I like to imagine a circle of cousin dialects on the North Sea coastal regions , spanning the modern day countries. I was amazed when learning Dutch how many of our dialect words mapped closely or exactly.

I'm fairly convinced my maternal grandad would be able to have a conversation with a Dutchman or Dane of his generation from the respective coasts (efter three or fower pints doon his thrapple).

Ironically, as we've all drifted towards the more cosmopolitan twangs of our respective moeities, we are losing our ability to converse with our cousins fae o'or the watter.
