Wouldn’t bother me. I didn’t know Dylan M had musical theatre training but if good in the role, why not. It’s all made up anyway.

nevernotmaybe · 17/01/2026 06:34

Britain had a long tradition of gender swapping roles on stage.

Azzure · 17/01/2026 06:35

Completely ridiculous like casting Rachel Dolezal to play Martin Luther King!!

Six is alright as a bit of fluff, but my main issue with it (apart from the hypocrisy of the writers) is that it constantly drones on about “telling the bits you don’t know” and then is filled with the same old stuff everybody knows about the six wives of Henry VIII. It’s so pleased with itself. It’s no Hamilton.

I enjoyed Hamilton and the cast was strong - excellent acting signing and stage presence. However I do struggle with how it is revered . It felt to me like it was trying to rewrite history with the American’s taking credit for a particular stand on slavery that was actually the UKs. It gave me the vibe that part of the reason they wanted to break ties with UK was slavery- which maybe true, I’m no historian I thought it was mostly about unfair British taxes, but if slavery did play a part, it was the a British to outlawed slavery and many British navy personnel died protecting that, way before America.

I am! And I wouldn't mind we are travelling to London for it. Its costing me a fucking fortune. She is obsessed with musical theatre and it was between Six and Hamilton but they did Six in her stage school show and she loves the music so she picked Six. I should have booked last week when Hamilton was ahead!

I absolutely cant stand Dylan Mulvany. The level of disconnect brands have with associating with them is infuriating. I would absolutely not have given them a penny of our money had I of known.

I think it's the Broadway show he's cast in?

I’m off to bed, but my final note to anyone who hasn’t seen SIX is this - it’s a 1 hour show condensing and exceptionally complex part of English history that attempts to give a voice to 6 women who suffered at the hands of an English king.

It’s a musical

It’s not a historical narrative

It heavily relies on tropes about females - the unattractive one, the feisty one, the homemaker, the temptress etc and does its best to - within the limits of a one theatre show - to try and challenge some of this and turn it upside down.🙃

Yes. This is what I was thinking. Surely a show that is so reductive about women can’t be seen as feminist anyway? It’s written by a man who thinks “woman” is a costume. He never gave a shit about women.

There are a number of online TRAs who fancy themselves as Anne Boleyn. One was rumoured to be Shon Faye himself.

BCBird · 17/01/2026 07:07

Wtaf. Seen the film twice. Will not be going to theatre while he is in it.

I seem to recall some outrage from the trans gang when Eddie redmayne was cast in a "trans role". Apparently he was stealing it from those who deserve it because you know, actors shouldn't act, they should only be cast in roles that align with them IRL.

Anyway, obviously that obviously doesn't count in reverse does it?

I can't get worked up about this, especially if one of the writers is trans. It's literally just a man playing the role of a woman - for once the argument about how "people have been taking their kids to see pantomime dames for generations" actually holds some water.

And I know that he's "taken the role" from an actual woman, but that's theatre - they often place big names and crowd pullers above better performers. And TBF for all the things he's not (ie a woman) he is a talented performer (although I've never heard him sing)

Ok, @OneGreyKoala- here’s one for you. Arguing your point by making derogatory personal comments about the person with whom you disagree (in this case, stating we’re all stupider than the writers of “Six”) is ad hominem and a logical fallacy, which is essentially no argument at all.

Dismantle that.

If they've been looking for 2 or 3 years for a trans identified man to play the role they must have been aware of men like Faye and Mulvaney chomping at the bit to play it.

I wonder what clinched it. Doesn't augur well if it's taken this long.

I'm almost interested to see if the Go Woke curse comes true.

porridgecake · 17/01/2026 07:21

Listen to Mark Chambers singing the Dr Who music
(David Tennant regenerating into Matt Smith). He is a counter tenor. Absolutely beautiful voice.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 17/01/2026 07:23

This isn't a musical which sticks rigidly to reality. Three of the actresses are black, which Henry VIIIs wives certainly weren't. Theres no problem with that and I see no issue with DM playing a role.

Yes, beautiful voice but you can still tell it's a counter tenor not a soprano. It would be even more obvious if a counter tenor would belt out one of the big soprano arias rather than the repertoire that was written for counter tenors.

Igneococcus · 17/01/2026 07:32

Of course he is going to play Anne Boleyn, not the mousy Anne of Cleves.

Yes, of course you can tell. I was just making a comment on a type of beautiful male voice. I went to see him at the Proms, and just thought I would share. (I go to a lot of French musical theatre and the range of male voices is amazing).

I probably shouldn't have put my comment in this thread. Nothing to do with Six or Dylan Mulvaney, tbf.
