SnowDaysAndBadLays · 16/01/2026 23:06

Totally captured.
A few years ago the writers refused to be on a chat show because JKR was also a guest.
I saw it last year and thought it was a bit shit, the Anne Boleyn actress kept talking in a weird baby voice.

Ann Boleyn isn’t actively beheaded in the show. The entire show is about the wives telling each of their stories - women who never had a voice at the time being humanised as really people.

I’ve seen it a few times and although all the wives are equal and all have very valid stories to tell AB has the best song and is portrayed as the sassiest one and the one who pushes back most against the patriarchy (yes I know Ann of Cleves actually achieves this) and the one most young girls relate to and look up to (my daughters did on seeing it, anyway)

So I’m completely unsurprised that this is the role that people who are determined to undermine female individuality would go after.

Isn’t Anne Boleyn portrayed as the airhead one?

Which she absolutely wasn’t.

ForensicFlossy · 16/01/2026 23:09

I saw this earlier and was horrified that a show that goes to the lengths of having a fully female band has done this.

I am thrilled that all 3 of my teenage dd had seen this announcement today and are as angry as I am.

Do they not pride themselves as being all female with female musicians as well as the cast?

Not female, women, and transwomen are women of course. <pukes>

You tell me?

It’s not a ‘deep’ show. Its 60 minutes of each of the queens singing their story and then a group number at the end.

If you’ve not seen it you might not comprehend the format?

Alpacajigsaw · 16/01/2026 23:46

Ffs

I’ve seen it, thanks. I found it didn’t live up to the hype.

I also know my Tudor history.

Sausagescanfly · 16/01/2026 23:50

This might be a stupid question, but how does a male voice work in a female role?

LikeNoYeah · 16/01/2026 23:51

LOL

Seriously?

ifeelprettyandwitty · 16/01/2026 23:53

I’m off to bed, but my final note to anyone who hasn’t seen SIX is this - it’s a 1 hour show condensing and exceptionally complex part of English history that attempts to give a voice to 6 women who suffered at the hands of an English king.

It’s a musical

It’s not a historical narrative

It heavily relies on tropes about females - the unattractive one, the feisty one, the homemaker, the temptress etc and does its best to - within the limits of a one theatre show - to try and challenge some of this and turn it upside down.🙃

TumbledTussocks · 16/01/2026 23:53

Ah I’ve been wanting to book this but not whilst he’s in there. Puts me right off.

I am not remotely going to argue with you about its historical content. That’s not what the thread is about. Stand down.

Seriestwo · 16/01/2026 23:57

He’s fucking massive and cant sing.

Whatado · 16/01/2026 23:59

That’s one argument to be sure! I would love to see how Dylan handles this!

Oh no! I’d be fucking gutted.

Divorced, bloke, died; divorced, beheaded, survived.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 17/01/2026 00:22

Six is alright as a bit of fluff, but my main issue with it (apart from the hypocrisy of the writers) is that it constantly drones on about “telling the bits you don’t know” and then is filled with the same old stuff everybody knows about the six wives of Henry VIII. It’s so pleased with itself. It’s no Hamilton.

persephonia · 17/01/2026 00:24

Sausagescanfly · 16/01/2026 23:50

Completely seperate to the discussion about this particular case... It can be done depending on the individuals vocal range. Not a tenor obvs but you get male Sopranos and men who can sing in Falsetto. I think if you are trained to listen you probably can tell the difference. But it doesn't sound ridiculous and there is a long history of male singers voicing female parts. It's not whether a man could reach those notes that is the issue really.

BerryTwister · 17/01/2026 00:27

brieandcrackers · 16/01/2026 22:50

Good for her! I’m seeing it later this year (in the UK), really loved Hamilton so looking forward to another historical musical.

@brieandcrackers I assume you mean him? The whole point of this thread is that a man has the part of a female character.

persephonia · 17/01/2026 00:28

Whether Mulvaney can hit those notes is a completely seperate question....

A pile of shite then. I hate musical theatre, this just adds to my 'never in a million years' list of experiences never to do twice.

You can always tell. 'Oh no you can't!'
Oh yes. You can.
