Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I wonder what the WI are going to announce on Woman's Hour in the next few minutes?

Apparently it will be a matter of the greatest seriousness and sorrow.

So ordinary men can go to their new sisterhood meetings? They say all people but then say it’s to share their experiences living as women so that would exclude ordinary men.

So it's a group for men who want to be women and women who are happy to listen to them wanging on about their experiences of pretending to be women.

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:17

It was an additional thought / comment to my previous post.

Haha has anyone noticed that only the TRAs who come on here do that 😂

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:18

ProfessorBettyBooper · 03/12/2025 11:17

No, their core values are that they are the Women's Institute. For women only.

Hth.

Absolutely. And , in addition, as they clearly express and have done repeatedly, that trans women are women.

“However, this change is only in respect to our membership policy and does not change our firm belief that transgender women are women.”

Who are these absolute morons who believe this? wtf.

It's amazing value, though. The membership fee is meant to cost £51 a year; but you can get it absolutely free, as they firmly believe that non-payers who identify as having paid are exactly the same as those who have paid up.

Screamingabdabz · 03/12/2025 11:19

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:16

Decent, educated and open minded individuals, capable of perceiving diversity and complexity in human experience.

It’s an institution for ‘women’ - clue is in the title.

Only one set of biological markers determines whether someone is a woman. It’s not the ‘human experience institution’ 🙄

Why can’t women have anything just for themselves without men inserting themselves. Pun intended.

ThatCyanCat · 03/12/2025 11:19

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:17

What a fresh, sophisticated and mature take.

And entirely correct, hence the lack of rebuttal.

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:18

Have the members been polled?

Decent, educated and open minded individuals, capable of perceiving diversity and complexity in human experience.

Thinking men cannot be women does not detract from any of this.

It just means you're not a liar.

FragilityOfCups · 03/12/2025 11:20

Yes, that works if you define woman as 'any adult'.

nicepotoftea · 03/12/2025 11:21

Lovelyindevon · 03/12/2025 11:11

How cruel.

Basically telling some members to fuck off, get back in your hole.

I'd imagine this was a safe space for many. Not anymore.

This was in the Guardian this morning.

“As an organisation that has proudly welcomed transgender women into our membership for more than 40 years, this is not something we would do unless we felt that we had no other choice.”
Transgender WI members known to the leadership team at the organisation had already been informed of the decision before an announcement, said Green.
“They’ve been so respectful and so understanding of the decision, but profoundly sad,” she said. “I spoke to one 80-year-old woman who has been in our organisation for decades, who said it was one of the greatest experiences of her life, and the only place in her 80 years where she’s been treated as a woman with respect.”

I'd have thought the WI would have had more bottle. They should be ashamed of themselves.

For reference - the Mothers' Union will have mothers, non mothers, men.

For reference - the Mothers' Union will have mothers, non mothers, men

You seem slightly confused.

There is nothing preventing the WI from changing their constitution so that they are a mixed sex organisation, like the Mother's Union, and respect is not sex dependent.

idrinkwineandiknitthings · 03/12/2025 11:16

There’s a lot of sad faces and “how could they” on the unofficial WI FB group

Yes, just been to read it following your comment. No longer in the WI. Was tempted to write “ohh, I might rejoin now!”

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 03/12/2025 11:22

Maybe they should just change their name to Schrödinger's Women's Institute and their motto to 'Exclusively for women and anybody else'.

GrandmaMazur · 03/12/2025 11:23

mysodapop · 03/12/2025 11:20

Have the members been polled?

No. This was a top down implementation of a policy that the members did not want.
If I remember correctly one of the key bods is married to a transwoman. So the change to the entire organisation might have been caused by that one man.

FragilityOfCups · 03/12/2025 11:23

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 03/12/2025 11:22

Yes, that seems to be what people are arguing for.

Are there any other national mixed-sex general hobby-type groups out there? There's the U3A and other 'lifelong learning' type groups.

MysticalPombear · 03/12/2025 11:23

How do we differentiate from

Trans women. Authentic who are or have transitioned who fully want to and are wanting to fully be a woman with relevant treatments in process, of have undergone.

(This is where I would say trabswomen are women)

Vs

Transvestites who say they are trans women

Who live as men but dress as women, as a hobby or fetish. Have no interest in transitioning.

This is where I get confused and deelvits a grey area.

Does trans mean transvestite or trans sexual who has transitioned or in process of it, as it seems to to be both atm

And here is where problem lies

Is it hayley from corra transsexual or transvestite doing it for a hobby.

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:04

I hope the SC are taking note of the ridiculous consequences of their shallowly thought-through judgement.
that civil society organisations are having to exclude people from their membership, against their values, because of (their interpretation of) the law. What kind of a country is this becoming?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

ah good one! Got anymore belters like that?

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:24

FragilityOfCups · 03/12/2025 11:20

Yes, that works if you define woman as 'any adult'.

I entirely disagree with your logic and so does the women's institute. And when we allow competing perspectives to coexist , in part through a free and independent civil society and rights to freedom of association, that's the beauty of a democratic society, wouldn't you say?

Helleofabore · 03/12/2025 11:24

Bloody hell. It is only Wednesday!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 03/12/2025 11:24

It is certainly anti-democratic that a civil society group has been forced to restrict their membership against their core values because of (interpretations) of state law.

No, no.

The WI was set up for women. The clue is in the name.

Men cannot join the WI, because they're not women.

Transwomen cannot join the WI, because they're men, and men are not women.

Oh and we don't have "state law" in the UK.

HTH.

Wellshellsbells · 03/12/2025 11:24

sillygoof · 03/12/2025 10:47

Apparently the WI has had trans members for 40 years. I wonder how many?

yes I would love to see the statistics on this! Can’t imagine there were that many in the 80s!!

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/12/2025 11:24

crinkletits · 03/12/2025 10:35

Wouldn’t it be great if membership now went up.

Well I'm much more likely to join now.

ThatCyanCat · 03/12/2025 11:25

GrandmaMazur · 03/12/2025 11:23

If I remember correctly one of the key bods is married to a transwoman. So the change to the entire organisation might have been caused by that one man.

This is apparently how it has happened in many organisations. One high up person is related to a trans identifying person and imposes the whole thing top down upon everyone else.

Meteorite87 · 03/12/2025 11:25

Pyjamatimenow · 03/12/2025 10:47

The statements from both the WI and guides are so begrudging!

I read the GG thread y/day, now this one; that was where my mind went too.

The tone in both is "We have no choice but to legally comply, and are sad about it"

SternJoyousBeev2 · 03/12/2025 11:26

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:09

Certainly looking less and less like a democratic one

Oh you do have more,,. That one is almost as good

EasternStandard · 03/12/2025 11:26

Screamingabdabz · 03/12/2025 11:13

“However, this change is only in respect to our membership policy and does not change our firm belief that transgender women are women.”

Really pleased it’s changed but like GG the male centric sadness is not required.
