Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I wonder what the WI are going to announce on Woman's Hour in the next few minutes?

Apparently it will be a matter of the greatest seriousness and sorrow.

Are charities allowed to do things outwith their charitable status?
So if they are set up for women are they allowed to do things for the wider 'sisterhood'?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 03/12/2025 10:45

Ha ha ha ha ha! About time, too.

I bet most of the membership are very happy about this.

But they're still saying:

"this change is only in respect to our membership policy and does not change our firm belief that transgender women are women"

So Hmm to that bit of the statement.

nauticant · 03/12/2025 10:45

Melissa Green: This is the only option that was available to us.

That's a lie.

She's terribly upset.

No comments in the press release about some of those women - you know the ones the WI was actually set up for - being very pleased about this development I notice.

Theory of mind comes to mind. We're upset about it, so everyone must be upset about it.

I'm wondering how many transgender members the WI have, compared, say to disabled people, and how much effort goes into making them feel wanted and accepted. I don't think I'll like the answer very much.

IwouldlikeanewTV · 03/12/2025 10:45

She sounds like she is crying.

littlebilliie · 03/12/2025 10:45

Hurrah 🎉

IwouldlikeanewTV · 03/12/2025 10:46

I’ve not joined the WI purely because of this issue. I have never been asked why I have not joined.

Pyjamatimenow · 03/12/2025 10:47

The statements from both the WI and guides are so begrudging!

sillygoof · 03/12/2025 10:47

Apparently the WI has had trans members for 40 years. I wonder how many?

nauticant · 03/12/2025 10:47

WI will be launching Sisterhood Groups for transwomen to participate.

Just how many wheels does this bus have? I’m losing count of the ‘fallen off’ count

MysticalPombear · 03/12/2025 10:48

TheNextStationIs · 03/12/2025 10:36

It is!

The sisterhood though - open to all people to share their experiences of "living as women". Those words again.

How do we differentiate from

Trans women. Authentic who are or have transitioned

Vs

Transvestites who say they are trans women

This is where I grt confused

Does trans mean transvestite or trans sexual who has transitioned or in process of it, as it seems to ne both atm

I simply do not believe that.
It cannot be true.

Here we go again, so disrespectful to women

One of the proposed resolutions for next year (they get chosen by members) is about calling for accessible public toilets to help support women, older people and disabled people. That is about the only thing I’ve seen about disability since I joined the WI.

WinterTrees · 03/12/2025 10:50

She's saying that they 'respect the views of those who are gender critical' in a tone of bristling disdain which then turns to warm gushiness when talking about 'those who welcome our transgender members.'

GrandmaMazur · 03/12/2025 10:51

They can fuck off with their sisterhood groups.

Jellyjellyonaplate · 03/12/2025 10:51

Surely the sisterhood groups are also not allowed if they are barring non trans men from them? Does this require a new legal effort?

Pyjamatimenow · 03/12/2025 10:51

nauticant · 03/12/2025 10:47

WI will be launching Sisterhood Groups for transwomen to participate.

All the men and their handmaidens can join those then. Although I hope charitable funds won’t be going towards setting them up

itsthetea · 03/12/2025 10:52

I don’t understand why if they are so keen to include transwomen they don’t just become an any sex organisation? I mean do they actually do anything where a persons sex is at all relevant ?

Szygy · 03/12/2025 10:52

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Fuckwits

sillygoof · 03/12/2025 10:52

Have they ever polled members before saying ‘the organisation says trans women are women’?

nauticant · 03/12/2025 10:52

Melissa Green did get in that as far as she's concerned, the WI are holding to TWAW.
