Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I wonder what the WI are going to announce on Woman's Hour in the next few minutes?

Apparently it will be a matter of the greatest seriousness and sorrow.

'We remain clear that our strong belief is that transgender women are women.'

Well that's nice for them isn't it

I mean honestly what total fuckwits. Men are not women however much you believe it ti be true

MrsOvertonsWindow · 03/12/2025 10:59

How odd to set up special sisterhood groups for men? Are there no groups of women worthy of special funding / attention?
Women with cancer? With life limiting illnesses? Homeless women? Women caring for others? Living in poverty? Women parenting unwell children? Women with mental health problems? (just off the top of my head)

Yet this special group of men get all their attention (and presumably funding?)

According to Melissa Green almost no one within the organisation complained about including transwomen.

Women are too scared to complain, they don’t know enough about it/ don’t understand it all. I live in a small town and there has been a couple of things recently that I’ve wished I’d had the guts to stand up about but I’m worried about repercussions at work and my husband’s work

...in April 2026, we will be launching a national network of local WI Sisterhood groups, which will offer monthly opportunities for all people, including transgender women, to come together to socialise, learn from each other, and share their experiences of living as women.

Doesn't the WI only meet monthly anyway? And how can they exclude other men from these special meetings?

Living as women 🙄

nauticant · 03/12/2025 11:00

These things that are trailed for Woman's Hour are often a disappointment. That was a notable exception and was great to listen to.

Also, massive LOL @:

Less Sisterhood and more Misterhood...

"...almost no one within the organisation DARED complain..."

There, Melissa, fixed that for you.

Yep.

And given that very badly veiled 'we listen to all sides but aren't gc women so nasty' statement, women are still unlikely to speak up.

There were so many untruths in that interview (which we know from the other thread). Shameful.

'We remain clear that our strong belief is that transgender women are women.'

Lol at the Women’s Institute

But you know the law….

"does not change our firm belief that transgender women are women"

Disappointing caveat.

No one has asked the members about any of this as far as I know. I haven’t been a member that long though

Organisations won't, as they know the reply won't go the way they want it to. I have a long running grumble with Glyndebourne about this due to their change of many toilets from single sex to mixed gender. That impacts women more. They didn't consult members and have absolutely refused to reply to me. Again that is driven from the top.

FeralWoman · 03/12/2025 11:03

So ordinary men can go to their new sisterhood meetings? They say all people but then say it’s to share their experiences living as women so that would exclude ordinary men.

I hope not too. I’ll be interested to see if any of this is mentioned at my next WI meeting. (There are no transwomen in my local branch)

Probably not. Our local WI ladies are all very well meaning elderly people going about their cake baking and helping out at local playgroups and church events quite peacefully. I hope they get left in peace and don’t have to deal with any of this absolute nonsense

puppymaddness · 03/12/2025 11:04

I hope the SC are taking note of the ridiculous consequences of their shallowly thought-through judgement.
that civil society organisations are having to exclude people from their membership, against their values, because of (their interpretation of) the law. What kind of a country is this becoming?

ProfessorBettyBooper · 03/12/2025 11:04

And all that hand wringing about how it will be policed. 'We need clarity from EHRC'.

They so nearly get it....

I think you’re on the wrong thread

mysodapop · 03/12/2025 11:05

They could merge with the Rotary Club and the Round Table guys? We could see interesting events like 'Knitting Pub Crawls' and 'Book Club Camping' and 'Baking Fun Runs'.

All so unnecessary. Let men and women and girls and boys have their own spaces. There are plenty of things for both sexes as well that people with grcs are welcome in.

Why does Phil Simm think the interpretation of the law has changed? Melissa Green, oh dear, what a sex traitor.

usedtobeaylis · 03/12/2025 11:00

Living as women 🙄

I'm genuinely interested to know what they think the shared experiences will be.

mysodapop · 03/12/2025 11:07

So will non trans identifying men be able to go to the Sisterhood groups?

Certainly looking less and less like a democratic one

nicepotoftea · 03/12/2025 10:44

It's all just veiled sexism.

It they want to include men there is nothing stopping them from doing that. They just have to include any man, and not just a favoured few.

this absolutely. Mumsnet allows anyone not just mums. Does anyone know what the Men's Sheds movement do?

Oh did we vote to allow men into women's spaces? I must have missed that...

ThatCyanCat · 03/12/2025 11:10

<<sob>>

It turns out women have rights! Tragedy!

itsthetea · 03/12/2025 11:10

They don’t have to exclude people they don’t want to - but to include some men they must include all men / they need to be inclusive

Presumably when you say the SC (Supreme Court) you are referring to a specific group of people and excluding others?

Can you confirm?

CuttingBackSomeMore · 03/12/2025 11:10

Surely they'll have to keep the finances and governance of the special sisterhood groups completely separate from those of the traditional WI if they are properly not to contravene their women-only charitable status? Will they have to set up a completely separate Special Sisterhood 'W'I ie a new organisation?
