student university toilets

DD is a 1st year student at a university in Scotland and frequently comes home (she commutes) bursting because she doesn't want to use the student toilets which are apparently all unisex with urinals. She tells me she wanders the building in vain for a female only toilet and even tries going to other student buildings and cannot find them. Yesterday she says she was walking around for 20 minutes before giving up out of desperation and using the unisex one. I wonder how many other universities are the same? It's appalling. DD will not complain or cause a scene but it makes her very uncomfortable.

Has she never found one?

Presuming she has, surely just return to those

or go at the station?

or coffee shop?

loads of options!

Yes apparently so, and no she hasn't found one without them yet and its been 2 weeks.

I work at a university and we have had unisex toilets for a couple of years, not been an issue to me. However, we don’t have urinals. Are these ‘out in the open’ or behind cubicle doors?

cigarsmokingwoman · 24/09/2025 12:50

She said out in the open with a few cubicles so she's seen willies and had male students laughing at her discomfort.

What university has mixed toilets with urinals out in the communal area?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 24/09/2025 12:52

Does she indeed....

Are you sure OP?

cigarsmokingwoman · 24/09/2025 12:57

I'm not making this up and I'm a regular poster, as MN could easily confirm. I'm just sharing what DD has told me and she's not one to lie either.

I don’t believe that you are making this up / embellishing the detail

Mochudubh · 24/09/2025 13:11

Can you post which Uni? Shouldn't be too outing as most have at least 10,000 students.

Possibly a poster familiar with the campus can help.

parietal · 24/09/2025 13:11

I can believe the university did this. One near me put “all gender” signs on the men’s (still with urinals) but the old female was still there with a female sign if you know where to look.

Has she tried asking if there is a reception desk? Sometimes there are some hidden away.

also look carefully on the university website and campus map for toilet locations.

Exactly
if we knew the university, then we could help identify all the single sex toilets!

MarieDeGournay · 24/09/2025 13:18

Frankly I'd believe anything about the lengths institutions, businesses and venues are prepared to go to to avoid providing women-only spaces and to avoid having to comply with the SC ruling.
They seem willing to ignore building regs, health and safety regs, workplace regs etc to make absolutely sure that women have no designated spaces.

E.g by removing existing single sex facilities that are building regs compliant AND work perfectly well for the vast majority of the population, and replacing them with 'unisex' facilities, some of which are clearly not regs compliant at all.

Maybe that's what the OP's DD has experienced at her uni. It wouldn't surprise me.

It's stirling university and you can google all the news about gender neutral toilets on campus.
I have not seen them myself so I can only take my DDs word for it and I don't really want her to be taking pictures of people or anything as proof.
If there are single sex toilets, then as a new student, she would indeed like to know where these are!

But you did say " are you sure'?

Sheiswaiting · 24/09/2025 13:34

Yes, University of Stirling provides gender-neutral toilet facilities, but they do not contain urinals; instead, they are self-contained cubicles with toilets and sinks. These facilities are available across the campus, with locations detailed on the university's estates website. The inclusion of these gender-neutral facilities supports inclusivity for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals who may feel unsafe or uncomfortable in traditional gendered bath-
rooms.

thornbury · 24/09/2025 13:53

At Bath they have his, hers and either. Is it possible that there are some she hasn't found yet? I would raise this with the SU.

GoldenGate · 24/09/2025 14:09

I seriously doubt they've added urinals to all the former female toilets? Still an issue if male students are sharing the space, even if all are perfectly behaved and respectful of womens' dignity.

GoldenGate · 24/09/2025 14:10

Ellebelieve · 24/09/2025 12:41

Sorry but why should the female students have to find alternatives? The setup clearly suits the men.

Sheiswaiting · 24/09/2025 15:24

There is not one single gender neutral toilet in sterling university with urinals. Fact.

Your DD has been telling porkies to you op

You are assuming she never needs to go at a time between arriving and leaving. This is not the case. And why should she have to? Single sex toilets are the basics of civilised provision for women (and men, who surely don't feel comfortable with women walking passed while they use a urinal?).

cinquanta · 24/09/2025 15:30

Shortshriftandlethal · 24/09/2025 13:24

But you did say " are you sure'?

Because the OP’s DD may be making it up or embellishing.

Hence the ‘you’ in italics.

Super. But are these gender-neutral toilets in addition to the required single sex provision?

Since these gender-neutral toilets are for 'transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals' is the ratio of them to single-sex toilets in proportion to the small number of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals in society?

You say transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals may feel unsafe or uncomfortable in traditional gendered 'bathrooms'.

Hopefully that helps them understand why women feel unsafe or uncomfortable in mixed-sex toilets, and why single-sex facilities must be available?

Dearover · 24/09/2025 15:38

There is a Wayfinder map. Put female toilet into the search bar and it comes up with a list of buildings and the floors they are on. You get a different list if you enter gender neutral toilets. She can try the library for starters.

(I have nothing to do with Stirling, but was intrigued)
