JKR accused of 'quoting hitler'

Dominoodles · 15/09/2025 22:38

Within the context of condemning political violence following the murder of Charlie Kirk, she quoted on X a line from Mein Kampf where Hitler talked about how he utilised political violence for his own gain. This was a clear statement in how allowing for political violence against one's rivals can lead to that in power manipulating things in order to harm others.

Unfortunately, articles are springing up across the internet shaming JKR for quoting or referring to this text at all, with many condemning her for 'nazi' views and accusing her of being far right.

(Personally I love JK, and it is such a shame that every single thing she says is twisted to mean the opposite of what she's actually saying!)

Nope. She wasn’t condemning Hitler. She was condemning the “many who scream fascist at opponents”

Hitler is dead so he isn’t doing any present tense screaming….😱 he hugged and drank and smoked with other fascists so he would not think of a fascist as an opponent.

Odd, how in 5 days you seem to have forgotten you said that she was making a comparison of her opponents to Hitler…

greengagesummers · 15/09/2025 22:46
Wasn’t she actually using the quote to suggest that anyone advocating violence is similar to Hitler?

Do your loved ones also notice you forgetting your own opinions and inexplicably arguing the opposite of what you said earlier?

I genuinely can't decide whether you're:

  • so high on your own virtue you actually can't conceive of being wrong
  • too dim to read and process anything more complex than a Bluesky post
  • so brainwashed (what there was of it) that you won't engage with heretical material first hand.

Don't much care which, and I suspect it's past your bedtime anyway. Go well (emphasis on first word).

Eh? Obviously the entire comparison only works in the first place if she condemns Hitler? Otherwise what would be the point of it?

You really do have some serious comprehension issues; and the silly crack about dementia just makes you look even more of a fool, my dear. Go back to school and do some work in your English lessons.

The comparison works either way, after all JKR is of the group who think wokeness is fascism and doesn’t shy away from saying it
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-wokeness-really-is-like-fascism/

So she could equally be inciting violence in doublespeak

Let’s not forget she was happy to cash in on racist stereotypes of Jews:

In JKR’s first Harry Potter book (c)1997, Harry discovers that he has inherited a fortune. The keepers of this fortune are a race of bankers-Goblins. Goblins have hook noses, olive skin, bald heads, and small, beady eyes. They are exceptionally intelligent but obsessed with gold and ownership. They are a persecuted minority with a history of rebellions. There are many suggestions throughout the series that goblins are meant to be subservient and their race has some inherent violence that needs to be kept at bay. They speak a language called “Gobbledegook.”

This did not, and still does not sit well with many of us. The goblins rendered for the “Harry Potter” movies were very shockingly like anti-Semitic cartoons.

Every film, every reprint, means children all over the world are even today being taught a caricature of a Jew that is in far more minds than Shakespeare’s Shylock ever was.

I’m not a TRA. I’m Jewish.

Your mockery of my perfectly valid discomfort at JKR’s cavalier quoting of Hitler and defence of the same says a lot about why antisemitism has increased around 400% in the UK.

Maybe. But your 'perfectly valid discomfort' has been cloaked in rudeness, snarking and patronising.

If you sound like a TRA and scold like a TRA, don't be surprised if that's how people react to you.

If you've got substantive points and want a proper conversation, read the room and try again.

The goblin stuff is not just a few years but a couple of decades old. When it was the American right banning Harry Potter they were the ones complaining about it!

You simply don’t seem to get the entire point of JKR’s tweet. Political violence, authoritarianism and totalitarianism are serious. Comparing these in the present day to Hitler’s liking for violence is a perfectly valid political comparison. It is not “doing a Holocaust minimisation” (I can’t even write that without hearing it in Frank Spencer’s voice Ooh Betty, I done a Holocaust minimisation!)

Hitler is not some kind of off-limits topic, especially for people who grew up in the postwar twentieth century during the Cold War, and spent literally decades reading and hearing about the Second World War — in school, on the television, from their families, from documentaries, from novels, from everyday conversations. People were not just much more well informed about it (and people in the occupied countries in continental Europe even more so); but were used to it being a very present topic. It simply does not even occur to most people over the age of 30 to think there is something verboten about discussing or quoting Hitler, because no part of history is off limits for us to know about and learn from.

And pretending that writing an obviously condemnatory tweet about Hitler is somehow equivalent to being the new David Irving really is too time-wasting silly to even be called ignorant. It’s just bad faith rubbish that you must know perfectly well is utter nonsense. What are you going to do, complain in GCSE history when it gets to the Hitler bits?

That you link goblins with Jews, that your mind even goes there, says more about your antisemitism and racist assumptions of Jews than anyone else. I never, ever made the connection. Your mind has to be truly fucked up to even think it. That's on you that you think Jews are like goblins.

You're right, I was rude.

Point of fact, though - my first post on this thread was in general response to you among others, and was sparked by your allegation that quoting a man's writing as evidence to a question asked about him was 'doing a Holocaust minimisation'. I might add that in a post shortly after you provided a link to a dementia organisation and asked if other PPs' loved ones "also notice you forgetting your own opinions and inexplicably arguing the opposite of what you said earlier?"

If we're talking tone-setting.

Anyway, even if you do have honest qualms about the quoting of Hitler and anti-Semitism, the way you've gone about it (insisting that an obviously condemnatory reference wasn't, pulling out old allegations around fictional creatures based on folklore from the Middle Ages) is almost impossible to take as a good-faith argument. We've seen this stuff literally hundreds of times from the TRA crew and you sound exactly like them in the absolute insistence that up is down and JKR is evil, and refusal to engage with any other interpretation. Their schtick got old a long time ago on this board.

So if you're genuinely upset to the extent that you really can't see any other angle I apologise for my misunderstanding, but I still think you're completely wrong and you're never going to get a decent conversation going because you don't seem to want one.

Your mockery of my perfectly valid discomfort at JKR’s cavalier quoting of Hitler and defence of the same says a lot about why antisemitism has increased around 400% in the UK.

If you are Jewish and you haven't noticed that the genderist people whose behavior is similar to that of Hitler's supporters (flags, distinctive clothing, enthusiasm for threats and actual violence, slogans, special words for those they hate, particular dislike for women and gays, youth rallies, suppression of free speech particularly of free journalism, condemnation of books, condemnation of scientists) tend, at the moment, to be strongly pro-Palestine and anti-Israel.

And that by extension (because they tend to be hard-of-thinking) they are anti-Semitic, you should wake up and look around at the real dangers to a free and tolerant society, not at your imaginary JKR shaped bogeywoman.

People in Europe and America don't need to be told Hitler was bad and that the actions of the Nazis were evil. We know.

That is why we are horrified by the gender Fascists.

The goblin hooked nose thing? Please. I’m mixed-race with a beak you could hang your coat on as are millions from the Mediterranean, Middle East, or South Asia. To claim hooked nose equals Jewish reinforces reductive stereotypes. She also doesn’t describe the goblins as having hooked noses.

Baldness? Not antisemitic, it’s biology catching up with your hairline.

Snape however is described as having a hooked nose, sallow skin, greasy black hair. Alan Rickman, Adam Driver… hot AF.
Give me a man with that nose now.
