JKR accused of 'quoting hitler'

Dominoodles · 15/09/2025 22:38

Within the context of condemning political violence following the murder of Charlie Kirk, she quoted on X a line from Mein Kampf where Hitler talked about how he utilised political violence for his own gain. This was a clear statement in how allowing for political violence against one's rivals can lead to that in power manipulating things in order to harm others.

Unfortunately, articles are springing up across the internet shaming JKR for quoting or referring to this text at all, with many condemning her for 'nazi' views and accusing her of being far right.

(Personally I love JK, and it is such a shame that every single thing she says is twisted to mean the opposite of what she's actually saying!)

this makes about as much sense as anything else this poster has said

it's loon central round here at the moment - what on earth is going on?

It's a Righteous Warrior For The Forces Of Goodness getting high on their own Righteous Farts.

SionnachRuadh · 21/09/2025 11:59

There seem to be an awful lot of Righteous Warriors dropping by recently.

I blame Keir Starmer. I don't know why, but on general principle he's bound to be to blame somehow.

Oh my, is that the sum of what you know about fascism? Hitler and Mussolini?

It actually predates 20th c. Europe and is not singular to Europe. The Early 20th c in Europe saw a rise in a fascism, not the invention of it.

The word was invented in the very early 1900's in Italy. (Wikipedia say 1905).

There may have been all sorts of nasty politics going on all around the world prior to that, but I don't think they used the word 'fascism'.

As an aside, technically fascism was not about racism - that was a Nazi preoccupation. Fascism was mostly about the relationship of the state to business - it was an economic political philosophy.

However, words do change their meaning over time, and nowadays in popular usage fascism is more or less a synonym for Nazism.

Even The Righteous need fodder for polishing their, um, haloes.

“Goblins have hook noses, olive skin, bald heads, and small, beady eyes.”

Nope. They have swarthy, clever faces, pointed beards and very long fingers and feet. Griphook has black eyes, which are described as ‘slanted’. His head is bigger than a human’s, but his legs are much smaller.

The film goblins seem to borrow extensively from the Dungeons and Dragons illustrations.

Either you’ve never read the books and are relying on what other people have falsely told you, or you are making stuff up.

Indeed. They are not described in the books as having hooked noses.

Not sure why being bald is supposedly a Jewish trope either.

It really isn't.

There is a tradition in Polish religious art of painting Jesus with ginger hair - you can see this in any Polish church - because back in the day icon painters in Poland didn't know what Middle Eastern people looked like, but there were lots of Ashkenazi Jews around, and in Poland ginger hair is a Jewish stereotype.

Bald heads, not really. Polish Catholics have enough of those to be getting on with.

eatfigs · 21/09/2025 14:16

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 20/09/2025 23:06

The comparison works either way, after all JKR is of the group who think wokeness is fascism and doesn’t shy away from saying it
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-wokeness-really-is-like-fascism/

So she could equally be inciting violence in doublespeak

Let’s not forget she was happy to cash in on racist stereotypes of Jews:

In JKR’s first Harry Potter book (c)1997, Harry discovers that he has inherited a fortune. The keepers of this fortune are a race of bankers-Goblins. Goblins have hook noses, olive skin, bald heads, and small, beady eyes. They are exceptionally intelligent but obsessed with gold and ownership. They are a persecuted minority with a history of rebellions. There are many suggestions throughout the series that goblins are meant to be subservient and their race has some inherent violence that needs to be kept at bay. They speak a language called “Gobbledegook.”

This did not, and still does not sit well with many of us. The goblins rendered for the “Harry Potter” movies were very shockingly like anti-Semitic cartoons.

Every film, every reprint, means children all over the world are even today being taught a caricature of a Jew that is in far more minds than Shakespeare’s Shylock ever was.

Edited

If you're reading about the goblins in Harry Potter and start thinking "yeah, just like Jews!", then the antisemite is you.

The only Jewish stereotype I'm aware of relating to hairiness is the term "Jewfro" (which I learned from a man who used it about his own impressive head of hair).

I think I remember reading that Judas Iscariot was meant to be a redhead, which was the origin of the unfavourable view of red hair in certain Western cultures (although Judas got stuck with red hair because it already had associations from even earlier cultures).

Early enough that just maybe, JKR wasn't to blame. Scenes.

The goblin hooked nose thing? Please. I’m mixed-race with a beak you could hang your coat on as are millions from the Mediterranean, Middle East, or South Asia. To claim hooked nose equals Jewish reinforces reductive stereotypes. She also doesn’t describe the goblins as having hooked noses.

Baldness? Not antisemitic, it’s biology catching up with your hairline.

Snape however is described as having a hooked nose, sallow skin, greasy black hair. Alan Rickman, Adam Driver… hot AF.
Give me a man with that nose now.

To claim hooked nose equals Jewish reinforces reductive stereotypes.

Yes. That poster reads like a classic racist and antisemite. No one even thinks like that, unless they are racist and bigoted. It reinforces my belief that most JKR haters are deeply racist, in addition to being misogynistic and bigoted against women and girls' sex-based needs and rights. I've come across several TRAs that have said the most awful and shocking racist things, really cruel racist things. Oh, and not to mention their homophobia. It's a trifecta.

Yep. It's like Male Pattern Baldness doesn't happen unless the male is Jewish. Also makes you wonder about skinheads. Are they Jewish nazis?

Posting my final word on this.

I left the thread due to the blatant antisemitism on display by posters joyfully competing to display their creative writing skills to call me an antisemite in supposedly funny ways- it appears the you’re a self loathing Jew trope is just a scratch beneath the surface when anyone Jewish happens to be uncomfortable with the Holocaust being appropriated and minimised by specifically quoting passages written by Hitler.

You have all exceeded my expectations for supporters of JKR.
I am doubly convinced you are no friend to us.

And you have exceeded our expectations as a supporter of the misogynistic and antisemitic TRAs. The hatred, bigotry, misogyny and racism in your heart seeps through your posts. Pretending to be Jewish doesn't fool any of us. We've seen your ilk far too much to be taken in.

I do not support TRAs. I am gender critical as anyone.

It is so upsetting to read these comments as I am Jewish.

I guess there is no ethical line JKR can cross without you applauding.

I have not reported the posts because I am not a TRA, but responses like this really really have me wondering if Jewish women are not welcome on the sex matters, a woman is an adult human female view of things.

I should know better really, just because you’re a feminist, it doesn’t mean you are tolerant of a Jewish woman raising concerns about how points are made in a feminist political movement. 😔

DeanElderberry · 27/09/2025 14:05

JKR did not cross any ethical line by pointing out the similarity between TRA tactics and those of fascists, using a quotation from the evil Hitler to do so.

Just as well you're off though, it will give you some time to practice reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

If you believe free speech is for you but not your political opponents, you're illiberal.

If no contrary evidence could change your beliefs, you're a fundamentalist.

If you believe the state should punish those with contrary views, you're a totalitarian.

If you believe political opponents should be punished with violence or death, you're a terrorist.

And for the hard of thinking, she's referring to the people who accuse gender critical feminists of fascism, and then set a good example by showing up at women's rights events with balaclavas and weapons to intimidate and assault women.

How on earth can these people be so lacking in self awareness as to think other people are the Nazis?

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 27/09/2025 14:17

I am not ignoring the context.

She purposefully selected a Hitler quote on his plan for how to kill all Jewish people in Europe as her clap back to a Jewish woman on X asking if JKR would condemn Hitler.

The way the conversation reads, JKR did not answer the question, instead she deflected by quoting one element of Hitler’s plan to genocide all the Jews in Europe as her answer.

That has caused me a lot of discomfort and concern about JKR, and not for the first time.

My people’s suffering at the hands of Hitler are not your analogy.
JKR should have condemned Hitler, by saying yes I include Hitler in that.
Instead she quoted him.

It’s like JKR is so polarised she cannot even bring herself agree with a Jewish woman who supports TRAs that Hitler is abhorrent.

That should be obvious common ground, right?

People who scream at protests where women are present are nothing like Hitler.
That is minimising the Holocaust to use Hitler & his victims (6 million Jews) in direct comparison to any street protest even civil unrest and riots that result in dozens killed.

Immediately after she was asked if ‘she included Hitler in that’. Context.

Other context; you misquote the description of goblins to make someone sound antisemitic.

If you are Jewish, you need to have a serious chat with your rabbi about malicious speech.
