Grayson Perry..

I’ve always had a lot of time for Grayson Perry- but I saw a couple of pictures on a thread, bizarrely enough, about Sewing Bee,of him wearing what appeared to be an erect dildo at a charity event. While I am prepared to believe anything about the behaviour of men, this does seem distinctly out of character. Is there a background story I need to know, or do I have to add him to my list of shits

That photo doesn’t look real to me. Anyone else?

Datun · 27/08/2025 08:37

He's completely open about it. And apparently most of his art is sex based.

He even claimed that he doesn't go out as the little girl 'Claire' much any more, because he's so famous people aren't shocked. It's the shock that gives him sexual pleasure.

Being honest about how he likes shocking men, women and, yes, children, in public, because it arouses him makes some people stop seeing it as abuse.

As far as I know that dildo photo is completely genuine. It's extraordinary that it has not been universally condemned. It's a bloody children's charity!

Charabanc · 27/08/2025 08:38

What's even more disgusting is that under the yellow coat, he was wearing a blue romper suit. With the massive penis sticking out. And bunny ears.

Grayson Perry..
TaborlinTheGreat · 27/08/2025 08:38

I don't see how it can be at odds with what you previously thought about him, as he's been perfectly open about his motivation for dressing as he does. He absolutely gives me the creeps and I don't understand why people have so much time for him.

Jimmy Saville vibes.

Weneedmoreheretics · 27/08/2025 08:39

Sadly because you can’t believe it doesn’t make it unreal, it’s been verefied over and over, hard to believe but unfortunately true. Sick sick man, used to like his wife but she’s obvious a nut job.

What the hell? I can’t think of any public place where that dildo would be acceptable .
Why on earth would anyone accept this as suitable ‘attire’ ? Is he so famous and cool that no one will challenge him?
It would appear he is surrounded by sycophants based on my very limited knowledge. If so, shame on him and every one of them.

Yes- it’s cognitive dissonance I think. People see the dildo but think surely it must be ok because they think Grayson Perry seems like a good person and he is certainly seen as cool by many, so that somehow makes the dildo acceptable because they don’t want to have to think ‘Blimey. Maybe he’s a massive perve’.

Datun · 27/08/2025 08:40

He'a also said that he wears special skirts to hide his erection.

Coffeeishot · 27/08/2025 08:41

The Dildo picture was years ago not that makes it right but it isn't recent.

Violetparis · 27/08/2025 08:42

I used to like him until I saw that photo, so disgusting and disrespectful. As mentioned he did himself no favours in his interview with Kirsty Young. He's a pevert in plain sight but gets away with it because he's a media luvvy.

Janeyso · 27/08/2025 08:42

Interesting trying to understand Philippa’s perspective

Oh that is horrific, Imagine thinking that is acceptable.

DeanElderberry · 27/08/2025 08:45

All these people who feel honesty makes it just fine. Does that apply to all men?

"I'm a flasher and insist on telling you about the kick I get out of it, because I know you hate that and it gives me an extra thrill" - oh great, how honest of you!

"I grope women on the tube and insist on telling you about the kick I get out of it, because I know you hate that and it gives me an extra thrill" - oh great, how honest of you!

where does it stop? at

"I rape women . . . . ."

would 'honesty' excuse that?

We are not compelled to celebrate male sexual transgression, particularly when it involves children, even if the men are artists or entertainers, even if the men are 'honest'.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2025 08:51

I’m not sure anyone is saying the honesty makes it fine, @DeanElderberry. It’s just a bit of insult not added to the injury.

i was curious why some posters doubted the veracity of the photo - afaik I don’t think that’s ever been seriously questioned? It seems entirely congruent with what he does.
Heres a spiked article by Jo Bartosch from last year after the photo ‘resurfaced’

Grayson Perry: when crossdressing crosses the line

How did the cross-dressing artist get away with flashing a prosthetic penis at a children’s charity fundraiser?

That photo revealed him to an utterly disgusting man. And yes it’s real.

Yes, shame on him and just as much shame on those enabling him.

I don't think his honesty makes it ok. It still gives me the ick.

However, there are lots of men with similar fetishes to him who claim to be the most marginalised people ever, and who have used the absolute dystopian breakdown of women's boundaries over the last decade to enter women's spaces to satisfy their fetish. And virtue-signalling morons enable them to do this, and deny that there is any sexual motivation.

So as inappropriate as GP's behaviour is, and he really crossed a line with wearing the dildo in public, at least he is not entering women's single sex spaces. It's a low bar, I know.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 27/08/2025 09:04

I just can’t get my head around it. I listened to Philippa Perry on Rylan’s podcast, talking about her relationship with Grayson, and it sounds such a lovely marriage.

And his programmes during Covid were great. He came across so well on them.

But there’s this fucking great elephant in the room. An elephant with an erection, wearing a romper.

How do some people just get away with it?

Cherrytree86 · 27/08/2025 09:08

Urgh he’s a right twat. - proper minger who gives me the ick.

LittleBitofBread · 27/08/2025 09:12

SharonEllis · 27/08/2025 08:18

I don't think its out of character.
I also have no time for him. He's a craven coward. He could have made all the difference in the debate around gender with his longstanding cross dressing and his high profile, especially in the art world. He chose not to and in fact rode the wave for his own purposes.

If it's a scale or a competition then I think he's at least less reprehensible than Eddie Izzard, who happily talked about himself as a cross-dresser, said he wore 'my clothes' not 'women's clothes' etc until it became clear that saying you were trans would get you worshipped, whereupon he hopped on the bandwagon.

CurlewKate · 27/08/2025 09:25

Why am I surprised? Well, I’ve always found the things he says interesting. I like the fact that he is living proof of my belief that men and women should be able to wear whatever they like without being restricted by gender stereotypes. He wrote a book on masculinity that my teenage son found interesting and helpful. And as far as I knew, he had never done anything as crass and offensive as this-I am amazed that it could have happened so long without me knowing about it. Hence my wondering it the picture is genuine.

Greenwitchart · 27/08/2025 09:29

I am so disappointed in him.

I never had any issues before, liked his art and had no problem with the cross dressing.

But wearing this for a children charity event is absolutely vile.

It seems that there are men who are so consumed with their fetishes that they lose all sight of reality and what is acceptable or not.

Another creep exposed.

Pluvia · 27/08/2025 09:30

I used to love his vases. I thought he was charming and funny in his TV series about class. I'm someone who grew up in the 70s and have no problem with men wearing women's clothing, so I just looked on his dressing up like a pantomime dame as part of his art.

Then I read something he'd written about being an autogynephile (a man who gets a sexual thrill out of dressing up as a woman and being seen in public dressed as a woman) and suddenly I could see his fetishism everywhere. It's in a lot of his vases once you start looking. He's on record as saying that he wears full gathered skirts to hide his erection when he's out in public. I began to realise what 'Claire', his 'female' persona, was all about. Grim.

He's just another exhibitionist man waggling his willy about, and the dildo he wore to a children's cancer charity was total provocation to see what he could get away with. The organisers could have said no, but no one seems to be prepared to do that. It's abusive.

I don't think you can dress up as a parody of a woman and not cause grievous insult to women. I may be white but I can understand the fury and hurt of people of colour when faced with blackface. Womanface is every bit as insulting.

ginasevern · 27/08/2025 09:31

Oh well. If we ever needed affirmation of male entitlement and fetish. Shame because I always quite liked him, although having said that I knew very little about him. I once read that he cross dressed because his father was an abusive bully to him but not to his younger sister. He therefore felt that if he dressed as a little girl, he felt safe from harm. And like a fucking mug I fell for it.
