I’ve always had a lot of time for Grayson Perry- but I saw a couple of pictures on a thread, bizarrely enough, about Sewing Bee,of him wearing what appeared to be an erect dildo at a charity event. While I am prepared to believe anything about the behaviour of men, this does seem distinctly out of character. Is there a background story I need to know, or do I have to add him to my list of shits

That picture has peaked many, many people. I sent that pic to a friend who thought he was wonderful and she was almost speechless. Let's just say she's no longer a fan.

That pic will haunt him forever.

Same here. With some friends who collect ceramics. 'Twas an interesting reaction.

It's got to the point I can't watch anything nice any more. Strictly, seeing bee, bake off, all full of misogynists and worse

I know. Strictly has got a bloody drag queen in it this year, and I'm desperately hoping it won't ruin it because Strictly is a love of mine. I know it's not 'proper' dancing (I've danced a lot and know some of the people who work teaching the celebs) but I've watched it since the second series and I bloody love it.

Sewing Bee is another one, there was a non-binary 'they/them'-pronouned DEI person on it last year. I couldn't bloody watch that performative shite being fawned all over.

Used to adore Bake Off but the last good year was when Nadiya won. The move to C4 was one of the last nails in the coffin, alongside the change in presenters (Pru grinds my gears, I can't bear Noel Fielding's "Ooh, I'm so KOOKY!") and Paul Hollywood gives me the ick.

It sounds such a lovely marriage...
In that interview Philippa Perry describes how she was taking him coffee in bed and she tripped and it went all over the stairs. And he wasn't angry, but instead said, let me help you. And that hit her "like a bullet" as she'd never had kindness like that before.

These appear to be two very damaged people. But that doesn't mean that they should inflict damage on others.

Urgh that’s the absolute bare minimum! Hardly the marker of a good man and a good marriage. Why is she so pathetically grateful for that??

Niminy · 27/08/2025 10:58

Now I know why I've never liked GP. I've never liked his ceramics, I just think they're tawdry and vulgar. I've never thought he was admirable or attractive for his cross-dressing. I've never thought he sounded like a nice person. I've always thought Philippa Perry sounded like an enabler.

ChaToilLeam · 27/08/2025 11:00

AGP fetishist in plain sight. But it's okay because it's ART. 🙄

I’m astounded that his wife is being blamed here.

What was meant, was that surely his wife, friends or the charity should have suggested wearing what he was wearing wasn't appropriate for the situation.
That isn't blame, it's suggesting that they consider other people's feelings when faced with a more than unsuitable outfit - and that's putting it mildly.

I’m not. Women are always responsible for men’s behaviour. Cf Mumsnet passim.

I wouldn’t ever blame his wife, but I do wonder how she can possibly fancy him and shag him. He gives me the proper ick 🤢

hholiday · 27/08/2025 11:05

I have heard that the Perrys are friends of Suzanne Moore. If true, I have always thought that was interesting. I love Suzanne’s writing - I’m not sure I would be able to reconcile the views she expresses with a friendship with GP. But men charm - that’s how they get away with things.

There's plenty of blame to share. The two are different though. GP has never claimed to be trans, unlike EI. That's what would have made a difference, as EI did originally. A man putting on a dress as an alter-ego, not to represent miraculous transition to the opposite sex.

GP has never claimed to be trans, unlike EI.
Yes, that's my point; Izzard was happy to be a man in skirts and make-up until trans became socially covetable – and safe for his career.

Exactly.

And anyway, ultimately both get off on making women a performance.

Tay596 · 27/08/2025 11:27

I always thought he was a creepy weirdo with shit art. Being an honest creepy weirdo doesn't make it any better, in fact I'd much prefer he kept it all private.

Greenwitchart · 27/08/2025 11:33

I have already commented but wanted to add that he has a collection in the Liberty Store in London of all places https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/fabrics/collections/grayson-perry/

And I hope this latest behaviour will see him ''cancelled'' by the mainstream.

I feel so stupid for having supported and enjoyed his works for so long without seeing through it all.

Or until it became mainstream enough to need a different way of getting everyone's attention Hmm

I used to respect the fact that Eddie Izzard was pushing the boundaries of what it means to be male - that it's ok to be a man that wears feminine clothes and makeup. Did he get a lot of criticism that affected his career? I thought him presenting like this was generally accepted.

And then suddenly he was Suzie, and everyone was calling him she and pretending that he is actually a woman. Except when a male acting role comes up and he is conveniently a man again. I have zero respect for him now.

We went to the Wallace Collection a couple of months ago - didn’t bother with the GP exhibition there but did get to sit on the fabric in their cafe.

No, when he said he was just a man wearing 'my clothes' rather than women's clothes he was accepted and lauded. Quite rightly IMO.
I mean when it started to look like trans was going to be a big thing and get people attention/work etc, that was when he started saying he was trans.

ArabellaScott · 27/08/2025 11:43

As with drag queens, I think the phrase 'sex clown' is most apposite.

I love the Wallace Collection but really don't want to see his show there. Apart from anything else, I find his art a bit overrated and one-note, and oddly judgemental/sneering about working-class people, considering he makes a song and dance about standing up for the working class/being working class himself.

Chariothorses · 27/08/2025 11:50

I saw the photos of Perry at this event for a children's charity at the time. One of the things that most shocked me was that none of those attending- which included staff who are trained in safeguarding and supporting vulnerable children- reported him to police, or at the very least told him his sexual/ fetish behaviour was so totally inappropriate he needed to leave the event.

I felt a bit sick to be honest. And without wanting to give you information you don't want to hear (!), I can sadly confirm that it is not rare for men with this fetish to wear 'babydoll' type dresses at home with families, showing their penis (no dildo) where children are present. (If they do so outside the home they still tend to get arrested fortunately, though there's no guarantee).

It is, and was then, for me, a sign of just how desperately social workers and adults trained in safeguarding are failing children, because of their capture by gender/ trans stuff that means they don't call out this wierd and frankly creepy sexual behaviour. (Perry was then given his own TV series despite the massive red flags his behaviour gives out. I think on BBC?).

WingingItSince1973 · 27/08/2025 11:54

As a csa survivor this makes me feel absolutely sick. Though anyone with a brain should see how disgusting this is. What on earth is wrong with people!

Raviliousart · 27/08/2025 11:57

I always liked Grayson Perry but that picture has completely turned me off.
I did think his girlish clothes less offensive than the Ru Paul type of female caracature with their over-exaggerated hair, makeup and figure. This thread has made me realise he is worse.
I also used to think Eddie Izzard was okay but he is now just as bad.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 27/08/2025 11:58

And his wife seems so nice too.

Yes it is blaming the wife.

First rule of misogyny- women are responsible for what men do.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/08/2025 12:05

His wiki page seems weirdly sanitised in how it describes his ‘Claire’ persona. Confused
