Because of course he did.

Note to MN and monitors. Nicoresti is described as a "trans woman", therefore biologically male, therefore "he" is factually correct.

Is this ‘Sophiemolly ‘ on Twitter, taking daily pics in women’s toilets holding placards saying ‘trampling on women’s rights’ etc?

I don't see the problem here, it wasn't a "women's" comedy award, just "the" comedy award.

No, that’s a different misogynistic man. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Jean Hatchet's analysis of his comedy is worth a read:

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1959976039053951247.html?utm_campaign=topunroll

He does the usual TRA thing of pretending that objections to men in women's toilets is purely on the basis that they might attack women. And in which case, that's a crime, so he just dismisses it as completely unconnected to trans ideology.

He says, if a man dresses up as a woman, enters a woman's toilet, and attacks her it's a crime. Emphasises that it's a crime.

And goes on to polish his pretence of defending women by saying it is 'horrible, inexcusable, unforgivable'.

Well, now the supreme Court has said that a transwomen even entering a woman's toilet is considered unlawful. Is that going to be horrible, inexcusable and unforgivable too?

Or is it that completely different?

Disguising your misogyny as comedy doesn't make less misogynistic.

@Velmy "Must be awful being such an unremarkable woman ..."

Must be awful being such an unremarkable man, that you have to pretend to be a woman in order to gain attention.
Why do I suspect that if he had performed as a man, he would not have won the award? And I think he knows that too. This has all been a device to win the award, his comedy not being funny enough when judged on its own merit (yes I have heard the clips on the radio. I was waiting for the funny bits, but they never came).

PariahHeep · 26/08/2025 10:00

Which is only going to intensify his inadequacy which in turn will only worsen his behaviour. He's not doing himself any favours.

This comes across as generally anti-trans.

Sam won an award that could be won by any comedian regardless of sex (or gender). Sam didn’t steal a woman’s award.

Sam is a misogynist and his entire comedy act revolves around it. HTH.

Sam won an award by using a rhetoric that if done by a male instead of a "trans woman" wouldn't have won anything.

I will even go so far as to say that I am not convinced that he is genuinely trans and not just playing to a premade audience to get his foot through the door.

@Ereshkigalangcleg no that doesn’t help at all actually. Even if it’s true that Sam is a misogynist (and I have no idea about that) that isn’t what the OP was cross about. She was cross that a trans person won an award, which was winnable by anyone.

@FrippEnos well of course it wouldn’t win anything, because a man performing an act about his experiences of being a trans woman wouldn’t make any sense if that man was not (or had never been) a trans woman.

Plenty of comedians let their life experiences influence their set. Women make jokes about their experiences as a woman, people of colour make jokes about their experiences of being people of colour etc. This is nothing groundbreaking.

JoDea · 26/08/2025 14:13

This him? Giving middle finger after getting the award - needing to take the pic in a toilet instead of being openly aggressive? Big man. Edgelord. Also, Who’s the middle finger for? The Edinburgh Comedy awards organisers? Women? Themselves? Why so bitter? https://www.reddit.com/r/womensliberation/s/spXud3hRNr

He won the award because he’s a mediocre misogynist claiming to be a “woman”. Not because he’s a good comedian.

Before I enter into any further conversation with you on this, are you saying he’s a misogynist because he’s trans, or is there more to it?

All of his jokes could have been told by a TRA or Trans ally.
Or a misogynist, they are based around the current of complaints GC people.

As you say its not ground breaking and IMO not funny, made even less so by his picture in the ladies afterwards.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/08/2025 16:30

I’m saying that he’s a misogynist because he quite obviously is. RTFT. I can see you’re very “cross” too, at the audacity of the feminist board having a thread about his mediocre novelty act slagging off women campaigning for women’s rights. Like any other sad MRA. Sad times indeed.

And no, for the avoidance of doubt it’s him I’m calling a sad MRA, not you, @heroinechic

Blimey, a GC subreddit. I thought they'd all been shutdown.

heroinechic · 26/08/2025 17:08

Thanks for the clarification @Ereshkigalangcleg.

My view that OP’s initial post came across as generally anti-trans stands. I’m not sure what I’ve said to indicate that I’m ‘very’ cross about it.

It’s one thing to be rightly angry about a trans woman winning a woman’s award, it’s another to be angry about a trans woman winning an award that was open to be won by anyone. It seemed to me that OP took issue with Sam winning because Sam is trans. Not because Sam took a photo in a toilet, or takes the piss out of GC ideology (which IMO is fair game in comedy, as most things are).

This board is usually very sensible and focused around protecting women and their spaces. This thread just appears to be irritated by the general existence of trans people.

Lins77 · 26/08/2025 17:14

Speaking personally, my initial reaction was neutral, no reason in principle why a trans person should not win an open award. Having learned more about Sam's act and subsequent behaviour I feel somewhat more negative about it.

That said, I have not seen the act so am only going on what others have said about it. So I can't be 100% confident in my assessment!

illinivich · 26/08/2025 17:14

If taking the piss out of GC is fair play in comedy, taking the piss out of trans idology and the men who perform it is fair play here, is it not?

The question is though, would he have won the award, or indeed any award , if he hadn’t hit on the “ love me, woke people, I am trans and if you say anything nasty I will die and you will be be a murderer” trope.

Judging by the clips I have seen of him he isn’t particularly talented, his routine is stale, repetitive and recycled so I have the feeling that the answer is no, he wouldn’t have won anything, not even a goldfish in a plastic bag if he hadn’t had his Baldrick moment and thought of a clever wheeze.

Of course , there is the possibility that he was the very best Edinburgh had to offer this year, which if true is a very sad state of affairs.

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 23/08/2025 17:49

If if wasn't specifically a women's comedy award, then I don't have a problem with it - if indeed the show is funny and won on its own merits.

What I didn't like was the quote from the winner (on the BBC news app at least) saying that it was great to be part of an "all female" line-up of winners.

Yep. This thread is standard MN.
