Because of course he did.

Note to MN and monitors. Nicoresti is described as a "trans woman", therefore biologically male, therefore "he" is factually correct.

Unless you’ve seen all the comedians how can you possible know that.

Wouldn't you only need to have seen at least one who was funnier?

HappyNewTaxYear · 23/08/2025 22:21

TheodoraCrumpet · 23/08/2025 20:56

Jesus. Anyone actually seen her performance, or is it okay to just slag someone off for being trans? Don't answer that.

I watched. Looked and sounded like a man.

I don't see the problem here, it wasn't a "women's" comedy award, just "the" comedy award.

If he genuinely was the funniest comedian then fine, but I somehow doubt it.

I think they may have just had him on the end of the news roundup…
it went something like this: <male voice> <a bit stridently> “Stay out of sport!” - ‘my pleasure. I mean I thought dressing like this meant I’d never have to pretend to be interested in football again’.

i assume they tried to pick a funny bit.Confused

Ooh ooh ooh, I get it 🙋‍♀️ it's cos girls don't like football! We just like bubble baths and nail polish and kittens, and we scream when we see mud. I'm so happy that there's finally a woman to truly represent us in such a traditionally sexist profession. No doubt more hilarious jokes to follow about periods and boy trouble, and that time she burnt her pink cupcakes. So nice to feel seen.

moggly · 24/08/2025 00:33

Funniest thing in this thread so far is someone calling him "she"

Datun · 24/08/2025 07:58

YelloDaisy · 23/08/2025 22:11

That is crap ( that video) -he’s going to race Usain Bolt -maybe he doesn’t know the name of any female Olympic athlete

Yes, that was a bit of a slip up

The Comically Unfunny Award.

Abhannmor · 24/08/2025 08:02

@OtherS 😂 😆 come back laugh emoji!

Browniesforbreakfast · 24/08/2025 08:18

it's cos girls don't like football!

Well obviously, as trans children’s books will tell you, girls who are interested in football are clearly actually boys and should immediately be medicated with harmful drugs, instructed to lie to their classmates, leave home and move in with a ‘glitter family’ and have a party thrown for them.

BackToLurk · 24/08/2025 08:19

I don’t really care. As others have said it’s not a women’s award. More interesting, to me at least, is the fact the BBC have written the article in such a way that they don’t need to use a pronoun for him.

CountFucula · 24/08/2025 08:29

“No one is asking you to prove you're funny, they're there to have a good time and to listen.“

Sounds like the set was a preach to the choir job.

I have no idea about what's posted on Reddit, and no interest in it either. I can't tell whether Redditism is a genuine phenomenon or a witticism all of your own. But I don't imagine you will believe that, because, what was the word you quoted?
Believe it or not, there are people who disagree with you everywhere.

What does this even mean?

Yes, I noticed that, whereas they do for Ayoade Bamgboye.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 24/08/2025 08:41

The loudest laughter from men in the audience (or perhaps trans women…). It was very average comedy IMO. Nothing innovative nor clever. All a bit obvious but perhaps it might not land so well with me because I love football and hate bath bombs.

As an aside, and SN is not the first to do this, but dismissing concerns about physical danger and unfairness presented by trans men in women’s sports for a few laughs says a lot about them as a person to me.

Browniesforbreakfast · 23/08/2025 23:07

Comedy is incredibly subjective though. I only find about half the winners funny. One of my favourite comedians Kevin Bridges was beaten in this award by Sara Pascoe, I don’t think she’s funny and find her presence on sewing bee mildly irritating. I’m sure the panel thought she was funnier at the time and that lots of people enjoy her stuff. It’s just not for me,

ShinyBlueTractor · 24/08/2025 08:50

I watched this clip. That's some brass neck to make jokes about what women do in the toilets then have a pop at "hack comedians" for doing the exact same jokes..

MagicSexEssence · 24/08/2025 08:52

He's not even the first trans comedian to win though. Nanette won a few years back and she's "non binary", although maybe wasn't at the time? Is transness backdated?

I also watched the clip and found it quite unfunny. I also agree that it's interesting he picked a male runner as his competitor. He could have easily picked a very good female runner who is also a UK household name like Paula Radcliffe.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 24/08/2025 08:54

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to whoever gave him this award and to the BBC for publicising it.

People will be watching that video and thinking ‘but he’s clearly a man, I thought you couldn’t tell the difference but you can’, and ‘but it’s not fair for men to race against women’.

Voilà: A few more people in the nation are peaked.

BundleBoogie · 24/08/2025 09:06

TheodoraCrumpet · 23/08/2025 21:43

I thought it was funny. It's observational comedy, not a serious treatise on gender politics.

Observational comedy needs to observe real life accurately though - he didn’t.

NC

I knew Sam way back and haven't spoken to him for years. I knew he was into gender stuff more recently but hadn't realised he was fully identifying as a woman.

He was quite funny and did work hard on his comedy so I assume that is still the case although the clips of this set don't seem that amusing. I think that's the material rather than him though as trans material has been done to death.

He was very arrogant and a bit of an arsehole to those around him. A bit of a jokey banter type that verged into minor bullying sometimes. That quote from him in the article 'oh swell' etc is how he used to talk quite a lot.

All of this is quite common to male comedians in my experience, especially those that continue on as an adult instead of dabbling a bit when young then getting a 'proper job'. You need a fair bit of narcissism to keep going with stand up comedy.

Sam also had the benefit of a well off family supporting him so could get past the starving artist phase that weeds out many.

He does work hard at comedy and is talented but not sure he was the best for this award. Don't really care though as its not a female only award so wasn't won unfairly. There are always various motives in judging including politics so nothing new.

Here’s a clip:

I have never seen a sofa in the ladies’ loos. It’s all very blokey, isn’t it?

I’ve seen a few sofas in loos over the years in fancier places, hotels mostly. Prestonfield house hotel in Edinburgh used (not been for years) to have an amazing pink chaise longue in the ladies.

When I saw this item on the BBC website last night I immediately just googled for reviews, not trusting either the Fringe or mad old Auntie to be impartial in the slightest. Skimmed through a couple and got the impression of a fairly decent but not spectacularly funny comic, kind of B minus, must try harder. Mention was made of a routine about trying to buy a two piece suit in TK Maxx - I presume skirt suit, otherwise he wouldn't be a ground breaking comedy genius - but wasn't tempted enough by the somewhat tepid reviews to check. Didn't see anything to justify Fringe Award, but I'm sure all the head tilting I noted in the newer publicity stills must have made the cliched sounding material much funnier.

Datun · 24/08/2025 09:20

It's quite telling how even when you're making comedy about being trans, it's unfailingly sexist.

Was his entire act about being trans? Because if so, he's going to run out of material pretty quickly.

I agree with this. I don't care if they are saying it's the first trans person or non-binary person or gender fluid person or whatever winning the award, so long as it is not a man winning an award in a category that has been designated for women.
