Girl guides are not safe. Parents beware!

From James Esses:

A whistleblower from
@Girlguiding
has been in touch. Volunteers have been instructed that, irrespective of the Supreme Court judgement, boys who identify as girls can use female camp rooms and toilets. Worse still, parents must not be told.

This is a safeguarding nightmare.

Is that actually policy? A friends DDs unit has a male leader (the dad of one of the girls). Doesn't identity as female, don't know many details as to whether they were short on leaders, just something she brought up as she was surprised. I assumed that meant men were able to be leaders?

Yes, men can volunteer, although ironically, it does say that some of our roles are for ‘women only’!

Men are allowed to be "unit helpers". It is a slightly different role to a "unit leader" and they are not full members of the organisation. They have a different categorisation - something like associated volunteer but I can't remember the exact wording off the top of my head. They are not allowed to make the promise. This was the case long before the trans policy came into effect - over the years we've had some brilliant dads help us out on a periodic basis.

Edit to add so technically it's true that all "leaders" are female as men cannot hold the "leader" role. There's a list on the HQ website somewhere about which roles men are and are not allowed to do.

Scout and guide groups are independent charities operating under the umbrella of the national associations. The charity trustees are responsible for following the law and ensuring safety REGARDLESS of what the national organisation says.

In scouts every adult volunteer is empowered to stop any activity if they feel it is unsafe - I would hope its the same in guides. So if you are involved in scouting or guiding locally please continue to do your duty of keeping young people safe regardless.

This is very much my experience as a longstanding leader. The trans policy stinks but there are no circumstances under which I would allow girls to share a tent with a biological male.

Ive said informally for years that I’m happy to be kicked out on that hill if I’m ever tested. Fortunately I haven’t been (although I do have a guide who wants me to believe she’s a cat).

Ive just got everything crossed that they will now be forced to change the official policies.

Yes, but surely if their position is that any man who self identifies as a woman is one, then they’re free to hold female positions because they’re deemed to be women?

Yes, that's the point of the thread. That was the girlguiding HQ position in terms of the trans policy. It now looks like the Supreme Court judgment / EHRC guidance means that the policy will have to change. We are all waiting to see what info HQ are going to put out about what has happened this week.

Of course it is. We’re not talking about a few Dad’s giving up a free weekend now and again to help out.

GCornotGCthatisthequestion · 25/04/2025 15:50

I would take things like this with a pinch of salt. There are a lot of people who like to create outrage.

It was already their policy prior to the judgement despite being told of the issues.

The same captured people are in charge - are they likely to change it? They clearly do not remotely care about safeguarding girls.

No but the point of my comment about the dads is that upthread someone was saying about this meaning there will be no more men in girlguiding. That won't necessarily be the case as legitimately, men will still play a part in the organisation as they have done - even when they are not transwomen.

The CEO has resigned and a new one hasn't been appointed. We don't know what the position will be of the new one yet.

Fair enough, but men masquerading as women are the actual issue.

Ooh that’s good news I hadn’t heard. Let’s keep everything crossed the new one is sane.

That’s a good post. They have to consider it in light of the guidance and having read it it, it’s not ambiguous. It’s going to take time.

Gundogday · 26/04/2025 19:27

Good interim message (as a result of this thread).

It’ll be interesting to see what they decide going forward . Will they make Guides officially mixed sex, like the scouts?

Why would boys be present in the girl guides?

Where have you been for the last few years?
GG have been letting 'transgirls' ie gender confused boys into their packs.
Without making it clear to other parents.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/04/2025 20:00

Gundogday · 25/04/2025 22:28

When camping.

If it's a small tent with maybe four people can't they take it in turns to dress in there? Or dress in the toilets, in a cubicle?
Sorry I know I have very limited camping experience.

Davros · 26/04/2025 20:14

After all that history, can they just rebrand it “mixed guides”? Can its single sex background and long standing name just be switched? It’s clear it was set up for girls, can they change it without any consequences?

FNDandme · 26/04/2025 20:25

This is why (among many other reasons) my DD will sadly not be in GG and attending scouts instead. Said as a woman who did rainbow’s, brownies, guides, rangers, young leader and unit leader for brownies and rainbows

InflagranteDelicto · 26/04/2025 20:55

This leader is militantly GC. Rather than pull your daughter's from GG, write to them.
I am really disappointed by the number of leaders who are captured by this nonsense posting in response to that announcement on FB/IG.

As already said. I am a Guide leader and opposed to trans boys and women (boys and men) being members, although male supporters and unit helpers are valuable members of our organisation.
Unfortunately Scouting has also swallowed the cool aid. Scouts have the same view of gender identity as per bad stonewall law.
I very much hope guides will pivot to supporting all girls including all those who identify as non binary or boys to help them develop self comfort in who they are and that girls don't need to be long haired with a porm star body.

I doubt it, this would be seismic change that they haven’t got a mandate for.

Given their recent approach to safeguarding I think it's more likely they'd start up a scheme to supply those children with binders without their parents' knowledge.
