Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

Amazed by all the responses here. Also amazed the thread is still up. Wow! Perhaps the bots got bored?
I think the Oscars are way behind the times and the zeitgeist here, anyway. Definitely an anti-Trump stance. Fingers crossed a woman wins Best Actress, rather than someone 'stunning and brave'.

Women's awards should go to women otherwise they're unisex awards.
I think people finally remember there are 2 sexes!

"stunning and brave" that really made me laugh😂. You forgot my personal favourite.."living their truth "

I'm enough of a film nerd to be glad I've seen it despite thinking it was pants. 😁

I'm disappointed though not surprised entirely that Mark Kermode loved it.

Mark Kermode may have said he loved it...

Aw, no, I think he is quite honest. I am a mark Kermode fan. I am inclined to think that he thinks he likes it 😉

He is a massive anti trumper though so maybe that's in his subconscious. I think he's quite 'be kind' on the trans rights thing generally though.

Arran2024 · 25/01/2025 17:47

Kevin Maher in the Times said Karla's nomination was "well deserved".

Mumteedum · 25/01/2025 18:11

Well I beg to differ with Kevin Maher. It was a mediocre performance in a bizarre film of other mediocre performances that thinks it's audacious but is just preposterous and pretentious, with a stinking script and a lack of anything meaningful to say.

I think I'd like to be a film critic.... Or else it's just nice to be blunt about the bullshit in this world somewhere. Thanks MN 👍🏻

MummytoE · 25/01/2025 18:14

I just read that Karla has already one best actress at Cannes film festival and European movie awards. Think they could be in for a shout when the oscars

Bye to Danny Dyer

Why on earth would they take the threads down?

They take threads down if they are anti-trans, I think. Another thread has beaten the dust since this one went up. Not sure why this one is still here!

It's really out of order isn't it! People are just pointing out that nominating a biological man for an award designed for actresses is denying an opportunity to a woman, which is completely unfair.

It's not anti-trans. It's pro-women's rights, which you would think would be the point of MN.

Lottapianos · 26/01/2025 16:22

'I'm disappointed though not surprised entirely that Mark Kermode loved it.'

Disappointed but not surprised here too

I tried to watch the film today but gave up about an hour in. Absolute tripe - terrible songs, badly sung, ridiculous story and really quite dull. I thought that Gascon was fine but no revelation. I thought that Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez were much more impressive

SmudgeHughes · 26/01/2025 18:55

Hoppinggreen · 24/01/2025 09:42

I don't like it at all BUT if this person is legally considered to be a woman then I suppose they have a right to be in the category - they will probably win.
I think its a way of sticking 2 fingers up at Trump more than anything else

It’s a way of sticking two fingers up to women.

SmudgeHughes · 26/01/2025 18:58

But a lot of people will think ‘oh just be kind; what does it matter; they pass ok’. Completely failing to realise that this takes yet another award from a woman.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 26/01/2025 19:32

Yep. Two prizes. Both go to men. Not exactly smashing the patriachy!

I think that there are plenty of people who know that this takes another award from a woman, @SmudgeHughes - they just don't care. Women only matter to these people as something they can colonise, replace, silence and erase. The worst part is that some of these people are women themselves.

My brother in law is part of the 'Be Kind' brigade - the last time we saw them, we had quite a heated discussion. He won't even contemplate third spaces - men's, women's AND gender-neutral loos/changing rooms, for example - because this is 'othering' the poor ickle trans women. I bit my tongue and didn't say that I don't give a shit about othering them - because they are 'other'.

mugglewump · 27/01/2025 11:52

Whilst I thought the film itself was nothing special and the plot is a bit meh, I think it is rare to have the same actor play themselves as a man and a woman and she is convincing. I thought the premise that she could not be herself because of the culture she lived in and therefore had to suffer the heartache of pretending to be a different person was poignant. She has as much right as anyone to be up for best actress.

"She' is not a she nor an actress.

Having been male from conception and remaining male, notwithstanding cosmetic changes - indeed visibly physically male.

Greyskybluesky · 27/01/2025 12:00

Mugglewump is technically not wrong to say "She has as much right as anyone to be up for best actress"

If anyone can identify as a woman nowadays, anyone has the right to be nominated as best actress.

What a joke this has all become.

It is technically right to say that it breaks all the Oscar traditions of nominating categories according to the sex of the actor or actress.

I will be livid if Cynthia Erivo loses out to this pile of shait!
The Mexican and LGB community have panned it!
