Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

at some point people might have to decide whether or not they are being deliberately provoked and just decide to switch off and move on. We can choose to be an audience or not.

INeedAPensieve · 24/01/2025 09:42

There was an AIBU thread as well that was taken down. No debate alive and well again....

Hoppinggreen · 24/01/2025 09:42

I don't like it at all BUT if this person is legally considered to be a woman then I suppose they have a right to be in the category - they will probably win.
I think its a way of sticking 2 fingers up at Trump more than anything else

BackToLurk · 24/01/2025 09:44

Actresses as a group tend to be paid less. Actresses as a group have to compete throughout their careers for fewer roles. Actresses as a group find it even harder to work as they get older. Old is over 40. This is a cumulative process that takes place throughout their career, placing them at a disadvantage compared to their male peers.

Even for those that now accept Gascon as a woman, this 'actress' has spent the majority of their career as a male actor. To attempt to now reward them as an 'actress' bearing in mind the fact that they have faced none of the challenges of other actresses in their 50s is insulting.

Good luck. Third time lucky??

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 24/01/2025 10:12

I saw the first thread and i didn’t see much that was giving out ‘lets crash and burn the whole thread’ vibes

there was deffo a post that could have been deleted (disclaimer….i only saw the first few pages but honestly i only pressed the refresh button and it disappeared)

it does seem that MNHQ don’t want it discussed as all which I find to be strange

(not that strange obvs but I thought they were a wee bit less trigger happy)

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 24/01/2025 10:13

Oh i am glad that posted, i was typing a post in that first thread and it took me ages to realise that the reason it wouldn’t post was because the whole thing had disappeared

HermioneWeasley · 24/01/2025 10:15

Emilia will win because the artistic community want to stick it to Trump. It will backfire because the sight of Emilia’ s frame in a ball gown and tearfully weeping about Emilia’s womanhood and how validating this is, will peak millions of people around the globe.

Hermyknee · 24/01/2025 10:28

There have been many times both women and men have been nominated for playing the opposite sex but have always been in their sex categories. Linda Hunt won playing a man and got the best supporting actress category.

I imagine a woman would not risk her career playing a transwoman now. I don’t think she would get any votes. In the unlikely event, she would surely be in the best actress category as it has always been.

I imagine a man who is not trans would not risk his career playing a transwoman now. I don’t think he would get enough votes. Eddie Redmayne is always very hand-wringing about his nomination in 2015.

There is no comparator. The competitor is in a class of their own.

From a technical point of view the singing tone was AI generated to sound higher so it was enhanced. I think if the beauty of the performance is that the actor can play a man and a woman then this should be noted. It’s also unfair for the voice artists who get paid to dub people’s voices because they are out of a job.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/01/2025 10:30

What Hermione said.

I saw the second AIBU thread late last night as I couldn't sleep, but wasn't in the mood to post on it, and predicted it would be down by the morning.

CorruptedCauldron · 24/01/2025 10:31

“Oscars groupthink pushes Emilia Perez, the weakest nominee, to a record-breaking lead.”

Interesting article here:

TheCatsTongue · 24/01/2025 10:42

Not going to lose any sleep knowing that multi-millionaire Angelina Jolie lost out on a nomination because a transwoman was nominated.

Our problem is thinking that the Oscars (were attendees get given goodie bags worth £100k+) have any effect on society. Did the year all the actresses wore black for MeToo stop worldwide sexism? Did the year people wore a dress multiple times stop climate change?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/01/2025 10:42

Well done to Bradshaw for commenting on the politics. I always liked his reviews. He doesn't seem to think Gascon will win best actress, despite that, which I think is interesting.

Arran2024 · 24/01/2025 10:47

I saw Nicole Kidman in Babygirl last week and am bemused that she lost out to a man. Of course, media and entertainment is one of the big industries overwhelmingly accepting of trans ideology. The BAFTAS have done the same. I wonder how women in the industry feel about seeing women pushed out to celebrate a man.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 24/01/2025 10:49

Not having seen the film, I have no idea whether this person is an absolutely outstanding actor, who deserves an Oscar nomination, or not. Assuming they are, then I suppose it would have been even more controversial for the academy to place them in the male category. I have some sympathy with the academy.

Shortshriftandlethal · 24/01/2025 10:50

Hollywood tries to hit back at Trump win.

CorruptedCauldron · 24/01/2025 10:54

There can be no sense of achievement in winning something if your work is not being judged on its merit, but is instead being used as a means to stick two fingers up at a president.

Westfacing · 24/01/2025 10:54

It reminds me of when Caitlyn Jenner was 'Woman of the Year'

CocoapuffPuff · 24/01/2025 10:57

It's just virtue signalling and pandering. These types of affairs have always done it. Will always do it. It means sod all. Just another group of self satisfied and self indulgent narcissistic ersewipes giving a bit of metal to someone in their tribe.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2025 11:00

I hope they get Ricky Gervais to do the speeches again.

shayri · 24/01/2025 11:03

Demi Moore, who has spent 62 years living
as a biological woman, should win
this award. But I suspect the oscar's will do their
usual political nonsense of virtue signalling
and right now, just after Trump, is the perfect time for them to bang their progressive drums. And what's worse is that the losers in this category will undoubtedly band together to applaud this, to perform their virtue. I really really hope
I'm wrong.

Iloveshihtzus · 24/01/2025 11:04

I hope they win - and I get to see all the other nominees and the women who lost out on a nomination, earning their stripes as an actress by being ‘so happy for them’.

But as already said - who cares what happens. It’s the Oscars, the last time I even tuned in to the red carpet was when Joan Rivers was commenting. My DC don’t follow who is nominated; I don’t think the Oscars is within a continent of the Zeitgeist, as this ‘groundbreaking 🙄’ nomination shows.

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/01/2025 11:05

Why on earth would they take the threads down?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/01/2025 11:05

I hope they get Ricky Gervais to do the speeches again.

Hahaha can you imagine!
