Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

Pretty much sums up the transphobia mumsnet continues to provide a platform for.

When a trans person breathes there’s a bloody mumsnet thread about it.

Being trans does not benefit her in the way it would in sport. She is playing a trans character, indeed for much of the film she plays a man pre-transition. She hasn’t taken anyone’s space because this is not a role a woman could play.

Why couldn’t a woman play this role? Women play men and men play women all the time in acting.

Whether any woman would want the backlash and whether any studio would fund it is another matter.

Greyskybluesky · 24/01/2025 19:46

OMG. Again. It's not about the role. It's about the nomination category.
🙄

I thought the point was they’re nominated for an award in the women’s category and thus taking an award away from a woman.

The point is the part is a man's part. Like you say he starts off as a man. So a woman couldn't have played the part. This is exactly the same situation as with Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams in Tootsie and Mrs Doubtfire, and those actors were put forward for the best actor category.

So they could have put this actor forward for best actor if they think the performance is so good. Sex not gender ID as the category. It is the same argument as with sport. Man taking a woman's place. How can you think losing opportunities for women is OK?

MonteStory · 24/01/2025 19:56

Who lost an opportunity?
If all the others were better they would have been nominated.
This argument is nonsensical. It’s a completely level playing field. Well except it isn’t because of people like you.

Comparing it to Mrs doubtfire is exactly why threads get deleted. Reasonable Munster users don’t want to debate with this offensive shit.

Shes a woman so she’s in the actress category. Get the fuck over it.

(cue ‘I’ll get over it when ‘they’ stop taking our opportunities’, like the Oscar was so nearly yours if it wasn’t for all those trans fuckers 😂😂. Honestly no one has a harder life than mumsnetters.)

Valeriekat · 24/01/2025 20:00

Hoppinggreen · 24/01/2025 09:42

I don't like it at all BUT if this person is legally considered to be a woman then I suppose they have a right to be in the category - they will probably win.
I think its a way of sticking 2 fingers up at Trump more than anything else

Yes I do think more people will vote for it as a vote against Trump which of course just penalises women again.

Emilia did take the space of an actual woman in the nominations. Although I doubt she's on Mumsnet but who knows

Eh? You said earlier that it’s a role no woman could play.
Then you said “she’s a woman so she’s in the actress category, get the fuck over it”.

Which is it?

Are you using woman to mean different things in these sentences?

MonteStory · 24/01/2025 20:20

I refrained from using the phrase ‘cis -woman’ for fear of being jumped on.

but, to rephrase

it is not a role a cis-woman could play.

Shes a transwoman so in the actress category.

Ok?

Actress category should be for women not trans women. Ok?

Hermyknee · 24/01/2025 20:27

Women have played transwomen before.

Sorry😆

Yes we’re in more enlightened times. Males can win both best actor and actress (note no trans men are going to win anything anytime soon if ever). And in the case of this specific film anyone can be cast as a Mexican (even if Spanish is so obviously a second language) apart from an actual Mexican.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/01/2025 21:15

HermioneWeasley · 24/01/2025 10:15

Emilia will win because the artistic community want to stick it to Trump. It will backfire because the sight of Emilia’ s frame in a ball gown and tearfully weeping about Emilia’s womanhood and how validating this is, will peak millions of people around the globe.

We can but hope, @HermioneWeasley.

MyrtleLion · 24/01/2025 21:17

He'll win because he is trans. He would not win if he was a man because he's a mediocre actor.

The academy members are overwhelmingly male so they probably recognised his portrayal as a woman because it conforms with the male ideal of womanhood. So in their heads he's a brilliant woman actress because he behaves like their idea of women.

Fuckers.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 24/01/2025 22:02

Well I for one think it's wonderful. As a woman I find it so inspiring to see the success of a person born with male privilege in a patriarchal society, and recognising that type of achievement is what women's awards are all about really, isn't it?

I forward to a resounding win and hope you will all join me in celebrating the absolutely everyday occurance of men being favoured over women.

Karla got to 52 without having created much of a stir - not exactly a huge star. Parts for older women are few and far between. Karla is doing extremely well all of a sudden.

I thought the "spirit of mumsnet" was to be helpful and kind to posters with a problem, and generally supportive to other women (like the ones who have lost the opportunity to be nominated for/win an award because a cheating male has taken the prize instead)

I'm just loving the idea that Angelina Jolie and Pamela Anderson might be sneaking on to FWR for a bit of female solidarity 😀

Keep up. Only a man can play the part of a man pretending to be a woman to win the best woman category.
