Why couldn’t a woman play this role? Women play men and men play women all the time in acting.

I thought the point was they’re nominated for an award in the women’s category and thus taking an award away from a woman.

The point is the part is a man's part. Like you say he starts off as a man. So a woman couldn't have played the part. This is exactly the same situation as with Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams in Tootsie and Mrs Doubtfire, and those actors were put forward for the best actor category.

So they could have put this actor forward for best actor if they think the performance is so good. Sex not gender ID as the category. It is the same argument as with sport. Man taking a woman's place. How can you think losing opportunities for women is OK?

Yes we’re in more enlightened times. Males can win both best actor and actress (note no trans men are going to win anything anytime soon if ever). And in the case of this specific film anyone can be cast as a Mexican (even if Spanish is so obviously a second language) apart from an actual Mexican.

He'll win because he is trans. He would not win if he was a man because he's a mediocre actor.

The academy members are overwhelmingly male so they probably recognised his portrayal as a woman because it conforms with the male ideal of womanhood. So in their heads he's a brilliant woman actress because he behaves like their idea of women.

Well I for one think it's wonderful. As a woman I find it so inspiring to see the success of a person born with male privilege in a patriarchal society, and recognising that type of achievement is what women's awards are all about really, isn't it?

Karla got to 52 without having created much of a stir - not exactly a huge star. Parts for older women are few and far between. Karla is doing extremely well all of a sudden.
