Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

Demi Moore, who has spent 62 years living
as a biological woman, should win
this award. But I suspect the oscar's will do their
usual political nonsense of virtue signalling
and right now, just after Trump, is the perfect time for them to bang their progressive drums. And what's worse is that the losers in this category will undoubtedly band together to applaud this, to perform their virtue. I really really hope
I'm wrong.

Don't be so sure. The Oscars typically give awards to films about Hollywood and it is usually decided that someone (like Demi Moore) should be given the award to celebrate their lifetime achievements. The Oscars usually decide that it is someone's time to finally win an award.

And there are tremendous amounts of money spent on lobbying, the Oscars don't have much love for Netflix, so I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Arran2024 · 24/01/2025 11:13

They didn't win at the Golden Globes - the film won big and the trans actress dominated the speeches, but that was for the film, not the best actress award. But of course Trump is now in place and imo it could go either way - sticking two fingers up to Trump or recognising that the bubble has burst. Whatever, I don't think it will be based purely on performance.

shayri · 24/01/2025 11:14

I hope you're right @TheCatsTongue

Beowulfa · 24/01/2025 11:26

I assume threads have been pulled for correct sex pronoun usage.

It's not like there's any quantifiable logic used in the process of deciding. How could you choose between Frances McDormand (3 Billboards) or Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) to give one example (2018)?

Ralph Fiennes has never won. They had to give Lauren Bacall an "honorary" one when she was in her 80s.

So if Ms Dainty-Shoulders wins it with the help of Cher's old vocoder, it will be like 1970 Best Picture winner "Patton"; on the list but nobody actually remembers it or watches it.

If the other women lose they will all say how glad they are and if one of them wins they will probably dedicate the win to this person.
Nobody will dare express anything that utter joy over the whole thing, wouldn't dare

“Oscars groupthink pushes Emilia Perez, the weakest nominee, to a record-breaking lead.”

Interesting article here:

www.theguardian.com/film/2025/jan/23/oscars-groupthink-pushes-emilia-perez-the-weakest-nominee-to-a-record-breaking-lead

I'm actually shocked this was in the guardian!!!

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/01/2025 11:05

Why on earth would they take the threads down?

They'd be better off concentrating their efforts on fixing the site issues, imo

We will see. The chance to award a 62 year old woman at her first nomination or a trans woman. Their woke brains will implode (only joking, nobody in Hollywood GAF about older women)

MummytoE · 24/01/2025 11:34

Previous thread was taken down because it wasn't " in the spirit of Mumsnet". I thought the point of forums etc was to hear different opinions and foster discussions. This reaks of censorship.

AlisonDonut · 24/01/2025 11:56

What is important in life is not what you can say, but what you can't.

I thought the "spirit of mumsnet" was to be helpful and kind to posters with a problem, and generally supportive to other women (like the ones who have lost the opportunity to be nominated for/win an award because a cheating male has taken the prize instead)

What a defensive post when we are on the same side. If you had seen my posts on the other thread you would know that I very much agree with you

I wasn't disagreeing with you! I was disagreeing with this "spirit of mumsnet" thing.

Sorry , I realised as soon as I sent it that I had misinterpreted your post. Sincere apologies xx

Haven't seen the film (because Netflix is so expensive for so little now) but here is another take:

https://unherd.com/2025/01/emilia-perez-has-an-identity-crisis/

Not so positive in representation as people think it is.

Emilia Pérez has an identity crisis

crumpet · 24/01/2025 12:47

I said on what I think is a deleted thread, that what is slightly bizarre is that the film cost 25million and has so far only made 10 million.

crumpet · 24/01/2025 12:47

Would love to see the Netflix figures

I don't think it matters
It could be the most Pro Trans or the most Anti Trans film ever made and either way it would still not be right for this person to be in a Best Actress Category

BackToLurk · 24/01/2025 13:21

I looked at the aggregates of critic and audience ratings for EP on Rotten Tomatoes and compared them with the other films nominated. Anyone involved with the film that looks at them must know that they’re not being nominated for artistic reasons. (And anyone involved with A Real Pain must be wondering what the fuck is going on).

Arran2024 · 24/01/2025 13:22

Dustin Hoffman won best actor oscar for playing a man who pretends to be a woman in Tootsie in 1983.

Robin Williams won a best actor Golden Globe for playing a man who pretends to be a woman in Mrs Doubtfire on 1993.

My understanding of the plot of the new film is that it is about a man ( Mexican drug cartel boss) who seeks to become a woman to avoid his past.

So how is this different from the previous two exactly?

I'm unsure of what you are asking. Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman are men so were rightly nominated in the actor category.

They were pretending to be women in a film, not real life

Pretends is the key word there

Thank you for having the patience to explain this!
Do you get it now @Arran2024 ?

JackieGoodman · 24/01/2025 13:33

The problem isn't this person being Oscar nominated @Arran2024 , it's that they are in the womens category.
