Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/01/2025 13:35

So how is this different from the previous two exactly?

Because they were nominated in the men's category, as should this be. But I suspect they might not want to have this performance win the "best actor" Oscar, women's is less important.

I looked at the aggregates of critic and audience ratings for EP on Rotten Tomatoes and compared them with the other films nominated. Anyone involved with the film that looks at them must know that they’re not being nominated for artistic reasons. (And anyone involved with A Real Pain must be wondering what the fuck is going on).

Take a look at the user reviews on IMDb as well. Plenty giving it a one-star, some wishing they could give it zero and wondering how on earth it even saw the light of day. The biggest backlash from Mexican reviewers very upset indeed at the cringingly bad portrayal of the issues affecting their country. But hey, just keep those nominations coming, right?

Haven't seen the film (because Netflix is so expensive for so little now) but here is another take:

https://unherd.com/2025/01/emilia-perez-has-an-identity-crisis/

Not so positive in representation as people think it is.

Was just going to post this article but cat beat me to it. It is not only critical of the quality of the film but reckons the trans community are not to happy with the it either. Apparently Perez's character comes across as a transwoman who is ultimately still male and presents a danger to women. The woke lovies have been busy promoting it and will undoubtedly vote for it.

Greyskybluesky · 24/01/2025 13:58

It sounds like a right mess, offending all the groups its supposed to portray!
That's my weekend viewing sorted anyway.

I think it would be far more ground breaking if Karla was nominated as best male actor and won. That really would be something.

It’s like Lia Thomas, swim as a transwoman in the men’s events and win an Olympic medal. Brilliant.

Exactly. Celebrate their achievements in the correct category. But that's not what they want to do. I genuinely do believe for these men it is about having power over women and deliberately inserting themselves into things for women.

Arran2024 · 24/01/2025 17:15

Karl has shot to the top of the acting profession with this role. Previously, both as a man and then as a trans woman, there was no suggestion of such amazing acting. No big award nominations. No huge parts. And Karla is 52, so that's a long time making it to film stardom. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karla_Sof%C3%ADa_Gasc%C3%B3n

Interestingly when a woman played a man she was awarded as an actress not as a male actor. I wonder what people would have thought if she was put up for best supporting actor?

From Wikipedia:
Linda Hunt, born Lydia Susanna Hunt (April 2, 1945) is an American actress of stage and screen. She made her film debut playing Mrs. Oxheart in Popeye (1980). Her portrayal of the male character Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first and, as of 2024, the only person to win an Oscar for portraying a character of the opposite sex.

Is this person a trans man in real life?

If not then it's not the same.

No they are not. Thats exactly what I am saying. She was portraying a man (not a cross dresser or trans character) and still got put in the actress category.

So she's a woman in real life and she got put in the actress category. The role she portrayed is irrelevant here.

The point of the original post is that the actor is male and got put in the actress category. Thereby depriving a woman of a nomination in the actress category.

Incredible, isn't it? It's fairly predictable that an average male competitor swimmer would be better than the elite females. But an average male actor? How come he's suddenly considered better than the women? Why, it's almost as if men are automatically judged as better than women even when they are far less talented.

Chersfrozenface · 24/01/2025 18:33

TBF, I think it's just a particular kind of men at this juncture.

What makes them a woman?

Her XX chromosomes. I'm talking about Lydia/Linda Hunt. Who are you talking about?

GiraffesAtThePark · 24/01/2025 19:07

I’m going to have to disagree. This film looks amazing. Give them all the awards including best woman. It won’t age badly at all.

What I am trying to say is that it is relevant. There are lots of examples of men playing men pretending to be women, women playing women pretending to be men. And Linda Hunt, a women, won an oscar playing a man. All of the above people throughout the years were placed in the category of their biological sex. Not who they played. Even Linda Hunt - her male role was in the actress category.

Yes. You are right. They were placed in the category of their biological sex.

Again - the point of the OP is that this actor is NOT placed in the category of their biological sex. That's literally the point.

I know!!!

Honestly I am getting you all confused as it is so confusing isn’t it 😅?!

I agree. My post was also saying this actor is not placed in the category of their biological sex.

I was also (failing) to put this into context to show that, despite gender swapping and sex swapping in roles, previously actors and actresses have always been nominated in the category of their biological sex.

Pretty much sums up the transphobia mumsnet continues to provide a platform for.

When a trans person breathes there’s a bloody mumsnet thread about it.

Being trans does not benefit her in the way it would in sport. She is playing a trans character, indeed for much of the film she plays a man pre-transition. She hasn’t taken anyone’s space because this is not a role a woman could play.
