Some trans-exclusionary feminists are thrilled. Many are concerned. This is because we are a wide range of people not a groupthink block.

Your post however certainly "says it all" about how little you understand gender critical feminism. Do some research, hang around, argue with us - you might learn something!

You're assuming I'm ignorant about 'gender critical' feminism. I'm not. I've read widely and I disagree with gender critical feminism. However, MN isn't the place to hash out different points of view on this topic, as the feminist threads are mostly an echo chamber.

duc748 · 21/01/2025 16:04

Seen a member of the Royal Family doing it. Seen David Bowie doing it. Not going to have a fit of the vapours because narcissistic prick Musk may have done it.

cassandre · 21/01/2025 16:05

But I jumped in for once, because I find it so depressing that 'gender-critical' feminists are championing Trump and his politics of hate.

Would you say the same if he abolished gay marriage, brought in gay military bans, banned IVF, etc etc? They're of a piece with this.

You can think what you like about trans issues, a fascist leader making policy to appease right wingers rather than provide for the rights and freedoms of individuals is a bad thing.

It's pandering to the evangelical right and I guarantee you won't like all their views, even if you like this one.

I agree. As terf as I am this kind of conservatism is in the same stable as abortion and gay marriage bans and that may be next…

duc748 · 21/01/2025 16:13

Well you've already said that you'd prefer the EO didn't happen, @cassandre, so presumably you're OK with the Lia Thomas's of this world carrying on doing their thing, taking women's places in sports, imposing themselves on women in changing rooms, etc etc? Are you saying that injustices should continue until such time as The Right Kind Of Person comes along to correct them?

I get that. We do pick and choose what we like, I happen to agree with the op on this one but would not agree if gay marriage etc was prohibited. However I don't think he'd get away with that so am cautiously optimistic as far as this goes.

It is but one issue amongst many. Trump is so wrong about others. I'm not American though, a lot of people in the States are passionate about him, think he's marvellous. A cult-like fanaticism surrounds the man.

We British are different.

What would like to continue?

Men in women’s sports and prisons?

@Grammarnut you only have to pay attention to what Trump et al say to realise that they are coming for women's rights. Musk is obsessed with the birth rate and increasing it, it's only a matter of time.

Musk also believes in surrogacy which is also where extreme trans rights ideology wants women used.

It's important to remember that right wing gender stereotypes and left wing gender stereotypes are too sides of the same coin. Neither liberates women.

Except that's not what's happening here, is it?
Would you rather women just shut up and didn't discuss the pros and cons of this on an open forum?

Forcing people to have operations in order to make them fit into one of two binary categories is emphatically NOT being pro-trans. 🙄

Trans is all about forcing gender non-conforming people into binary sex categories.

If you are a boy who likes playing with dolls and wearing dresses? Oooh you must really be a girl. (Rather than a gender non-conforming boy).
If you are a girl who likes short hair, climbing trees and maths? Oooh you must really be a boy. (Rather than a gender non-conforming girl).
It is regressive nonsense, and I feel that the strong sex-stereotypes we see in USA culture (Barbie, GI Joe and all of Hollywood output) is responsible for a lot of damage in this regard.
We should be way more accepting of gender non-conformity in everyone without feeling the need to try and change a person’s sexed body to make them fit in better with narrow gendered roles.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/01/2025 16:20

I'm in the US. I think those of you 'celebrating' need to realize that these same people who believe "Male and female created He them" also feel that abortion is a sin and should be banned with no exceptions and criminalized, no one (including women) should be protected from discrimination or have equal rights, and that since a woman's primary role should be in the home there is no need for laws protecting family or maternity leave. Because men don't need those things, women shouldn't have them either. And that removing such protections will 'encourage' trap women in certain social strata in their homes. Women of wealth or who have wealthy husbands will either not need these protections or will (as in the past) be able to circumvent them. But women of low or modest income, and indeed middle class (by US standards, not UK) women are going to suffer if Trump's MAGA agenda comes true. Take a look at Project 2025 and then say a hearty welcome to Gilead.

You can guarantee President Musk is behind this! He has a trans daughter who has disowned him because of his trans beliefs! Musk and Trump are not savours they are the most vile of people!

Musk's child has disowned him because of Musk's beliefs? So heresy against the child's religion?

nfkl · 21/01/2025 16:25

it is not championing Trump to say “on this one, well done”
When ppl do sth good, you have to give them credit, it’s called fairness and intellectual honesty, you should try.

Donald Trump is a sexist, grab them by the pu**y rapist, and a lot of other horrible, illegal things but he got elected democratically by a clear majority and this EA is a good thing.

These are the facts, they’re not neat the way of fairytales but that’s life for you.

Championing a thing that someone has done is not the same as championing them.

I detest Trump, but this roll-back of trans rights to the detriment of women's rights is a good thing.

Shame the Democrats couldn't see it.

It’s not anything like banning gay marriage. It’s providing rights and freedoms for women and girls to access safe single sex spaces for example, or compete on an equal footing with other women in sport.

Imnobody4 · 21/01/2025 16:27

Sorry if this has been posted. I just couldn't wade through all the Trump’s a Nazi drivel.

I was hoping a woman had written the order.

The executive order restoring women's rights was written by @MayMailman, former Director of Independent Women's Law Center, now Deputy Assistant to the President.

@MrsKeats

They are entirely different issues. they are all issues supported by the right wing MAGA supported though. Along with no abortion rights, criminal convictions for medical staff performing certain birth control procedures.

You can not support a despot just because one of the thousand policies is one you like.

The abortion debate has been going on for as long as I can remember. Maybe the Democrats should have actually done something about it when they could, if they felt it wasn't literally the only thing they could keep dangling in front of people to keep them on side.

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 21/01/2025 16:30

I fully believe Trump - like the vast majority of people - genuinely thinks it's fucking insane that so called 'liberals' have been trying to force everyone to believe men can become women just because they say so.

And we're supposed to bow down before them rather than notice they're wearing pornified woman face and that it's clearly a sexual fetish that they're trying to impose on unconsenting women and children.

It's anti-woman, anti-child Emperor's new Clothes. At least in the old story of the Emperor he wasn't deliberately flashing.

It's INSANE! This is a return to sanity.

Those trying to make out Trump wants women to go back to the kitchen haven't read the EO - part of why he's done this is to prevent sex discrimination against women which you can't do if 'women' contains men. They also apparently haven't noticed he's appointed the first ever female Chief of Staff - one of the most powerful positions in America.

You'd think by now they'd realise that obvious lies don't work.

duc748 · 21/01/2025 16:30

Your problems seems to be with Christians (or perhaps, religionists in general), @AcrossthePond55 . Trump, who never sees the inside of a church (and certainly does not comply with any Christian tenets) is no Christian, although many of them support him. Just because women don't want maternity provisions to be removed, why should they refuse a chance to see the back of policies that really do disadvantage women, like those listed in the EO?

tachetastic · 21/01/2025 16:32

ClawedButler · 21/01/2025 12:52

No, LGB issues are entirely separate from TQ+ issues.

This is about recognising reality rather than pandering to individual people's feelings.

And wheeling out the tired old "everything I don't like is just like the Nazis" argument doesn't work anymore. We see through it.

@ClawedButler : This is about recognising reality rather than pandering to individual people's feelings.

Pretty much what Trump supporters said when a Trump-appointed Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.

Trump isn't doing anything because he supports women's rights. It's about control.

What will be next freedom to be curtailed?

I know the argument that protecting trans rights can negatively impact women's rights, the same as protecting women's rights can negatively impact an unborn's rights. I think you can either have a permissive society or an intolerant one. I prefer to live in the former. I don't think it's possible to pick one issue out as an exception.
