I am cautiously optimistic rather than dancing about as some people are. We haven't 'won'. There is still a huge amount to do.

This is a great start to dismantling some of the top-down infiltration of gender ideology into government but a) it's not happening here, it's happening in the US and b) it could have the unintended consequence of galvanising opposition to sex realism.

I think it's going to be interesting, though, to see how this unfolds.

Haroldwilson · 21/01/2025 12:51

Would you say the same if he abolished gay marriage, brought in gay military bans, banned IVF, etc etc? They're of a piece with this.

You can think what you like about trans issues, a fascist leader making policy to appease right wingers rather than provide for the rights and freedoms of individuals is a bad thing.

It's pandering to the evangelical right and I guarantee you won't like all their views, even if you like this one.

ClawedButler · 21/01/2025 12:52

No, LGB issues are entirely separate from TQ+ issues.

This is about recognising reality rather than pandering to individual people's feelings.

And wheeling out the tired old "everything I don't like is just like the Nazis" argument doesn't work anymore. We see through it.

Greyskybluesky · 21/01/2025 12:55

Uh, what? Show me a political party whose views I align with 100%.
Perhaps it's possible to find value in some views and not others? Like, you know, I have a mind of my own?

They are entirely different issues.

@ClawedButler it could have the unintended consequence of galvanising opposition to sex realism.

Struggling to see the downside of this. What is the opposition and will it stand the light of day. I felt with the recent UK Women's March that most of the women there likely did not understand that the phrase 'All women' included men who self-ID as women. This needs to be made much clearer. I have huge sympathy with those see themselves as trans but I do not believe that a transwoman is a woman or a transman is a man. Because women and men are differentiated by biological sex and not simply experience. (And the experience of being trans is not in any case the same as the experience of being born and lived life as a woman).

nfkl · 21/01/2025 12:59

Very well crafted and articulated piece of legislation.
That it’s coming from Donald Trump, that was not in my karma bingo card, but that’s the times we’re in, at least, women and children will get the protection they deserve.
Good day for women.

This is absurd. It's entirely possible to keep Lia Thomas's penis put of the female changing room and swim team without banning gay marriage. It's not "pandering to the evangelical right". It's a perfectly sensible decision that will protect women and girls from creepy men in a multitude of ways.

Alabas · 21/01/2025 13:05

Yes defending women by taking away the rights they have over their body. Unfortunately I think this ‘biological truth’ will be used to erode what little rights to their body US women have left. The biological truth of women being the weaker sex, put on the planet to serve men and look after their offspring (whether forced to have sex or not)

I don’t believe people can change sex, but I have a strong belief that this is not being done to protect women, it’s just an excuse to ensure rich white men stay in power and protect their assets.

MrsPeregrine · 21/01/2025 13:06

Canada is due to hold an election later this year and I think there will be a change of government because of how unpopular the current one is. My money is on Pierre Poilievre being their new PM and I can just see him doing the same.

Hermyknee · 21/01/2025 13:06

Does anyone know who wrote this executive order?

“A fascist leader”

lazily throwing around terms like fascist are not helpful to anyone, what’s your understanding of fascism?

Mrsbloggz · 21/01/2025 13:09

Mr trump isn't doing this because he cares about people or cares about women's rights.
He's doing it because it's something that his base cares about and he knows it's a way to manipulate and control them, to work things to his advantage.
Mr trump cares only about amassing power and wealth for himself.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 21/01/2025 13:12

And wheeling out the tired old "everything I don't like is just like the Nazis" argument doesn't work anymore.

True. Unfortunately in this case, it pretty much is the Nazis. Trump is 100% going to adopt the same playbook as Fascism ie populism, economic protectionism, monopolism for favoured corporates and social conservatism. And it will look like it's working fueled by his supporters optimism, loose monetary policy and probably a crypto bubble right up until the wheels fall off and it doesn't, at which point he will become more and more authoritarian and anti free speach to maintain his position and keep the media and populace cowed about acknowledging the failure for as long as he can.

Because Trump can't stand criticism so he is never going to tell his supporters that he can't solve their problems after all, or that the reasons they think things are bad are not the real reasons, or that things will get worse before they can get better (and stay worse for some people because actually they already had it better than they deserved based on their input). So he'll just keep pulling all the short term fixes he can until he runs out. And then god knows what he'll do.

The US Left are finding out they are the boy who cried wolf and when the eal Nazis came no one was listening. :(

The best hope for the US is for one of Trump's side who has less stage charisma to take advantage of a period of weakness to attack and dethrone him, and then fail to keep popular support.

nfkl · 21/01/2025 13:12

Trump is no feminist, that’s for sure, but women had to fight on 2 fronts: gender woo woo on the left, reproductive rights from the right. They just won on one side.

Gender wars have taken lots of time and energy that can be redirected to defend other women’s rights, such as abortion.

This is what I wanted to say but couldn't articulate! It feels very much like Trump pushing his personal feelings about the gender wars through, but dressing it up as women's rights, deftly ignoring the arguably worse issues around abortion etc.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 21/01/2025 13:19

Huh, hidden post. I've not said anything extreme so I'm guessing it is because I referenced a topic that is legitimately associated with Trump but also triggers a red flag for scammer posts. Hopefully it'll come back before the thread has moved on too far :(

You've got to be joking.
He's hardly a friend of women.

At the same time as the Presidential and Senate elections, there were ballots to restore or expand abortion rights in 10 states - and the measures passed in 7 of them.

Including Arizona, Missouri, Nevada and Montana, which Trump won.

Thats great news!

This gender drama has taken a hell of a lot of time and energy. Hopefully women can now have more time to campaign on reproductive front.

I read Melania was very unhappy about the anti abortion stuff. Being a grown European woman thats not surprising but it was interesting that she explicitly voiced that.

Mrsbloggz · 21/01/2025 13:29

Mr trump's assertion that there are only two genders (with which I agree) is a prelude to a return to the good old days when men were men and women did as they were told (whilst pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen).

MoneySpell · 21/01/2025 13:34

It's very weird that a rapist is becoming a feminist hero to some, but I guess it's a relief that someone in power is aware that there are two sexes.

This Executive Order does not cover the right to choose, (which is what I assume you are referring to) abortion rights are now decided at State level.

Your line of reasoning is not clear to me. Have you read the text of the Order?

CranfordScones · 21/01/2025 13:35

Some of the most devastating adverts run by Trump were the:
"Kamala is for They/Them - President Trump is for You" ones - they're on youtube.

If you still don't understand why voters (and many women) voted for Trump...
