Three-day ban on Reddit for “hate”

ConversingWithStrangers · 30/12/2024 10:45

The only thing I can think of is posting on a UK sub about male violence. A man said that it’s not just men who have a problem with being violent because he’d been assaulted by a trans woman. I replied, “how did you know your assailant was trans?”.

They literally have subs for men to masturbate to videos of women who have a look of being “dead behind the eyes” they’ve been abused so much.

(It’s either that or somebody doesn’t like my crochet advice).

Although, having said that, I sometimes spend several seconds deciding on which of the four I should use!

It's the same for me. I probably use the "agree" one most.

TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged · 03/01/2025 07:27

I'm feeling a bit blindsided by the direction this thread has taken.
I tried to put together a thoughtful, cogent post but I'm feeling really worked up and emotional.
The mysogyny and nastiness is off the scale.
Suggesting that @Helleofabore wishes to minimise serious histories of abuse by stating that the react buttons are "an abuser's charter" is really wrong IMO. I hope that doesn't get to you, Helle.

Fucking hell.
I come to Mumsnet to get away from that sort of mysogyny.
Just want to give a shout out to the old women, to the daggy women, to the women who are shocked by sleeve tattoos (in 2024?! good for you, I want to know where that rock you're hiding under is), to the churchwomen, to the women who wear pearls, to the women who /clutch/ their pearls, to the uptight women, to the prudes, to the nasty women, to the withholding women:
Don't let the shamers shame you.

And lets hear it for the shaming women, for the women who are doing whatever it is they need to do to get by in this properly fucked up, mysogynistic world. I wish that didn't involve FWR boards but there you have it.

LittleMyTopKnot · 03/01/2025 07:53

I just find the entire discussion confusing.

but with regards to the use of internet language and emojis, am I right in assuming that the same posters think that

  1. a 3 day ban on Reddit is justified due to the hate in the hurtful comment “how did you know that the person was trans?”

  2. any “mocking” of posters on this thread is something that they should get over?

I probably got this wrong, maybe the thread moved on 🤷‍♀️

Thank you for checking. But I am now quite used to the posts from posters such as that one.

However, please don’t let it upset you.

I would think that many posters would understand that the use of the occasional laughing emoji was not what the discussion is about. But that the discussion is about when a poster has been abusive and personally attacked others, (and may have even been deleted for those personal attacks) including making false accusations, that then the use of the laughing emoji contributes to that personal attack.

I own to being a dag!! I draw the line at wearing my uggs to Woolies or Coles (or now Tesco or waitrose) though. Even dags have some standards 😁.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/01/2025 08:45

And I get it. Sometimes what people say is too ridiculous and incoherent to warrant much more of a response.

Your self awareness about your own posts is refreshing.

Datun · 03/01/2025 02:14

I wouldn't mind, but from my experience of the women on this board, their own piercings and tattoos aren't exactly minimal. 😁

Yes. Piercings and tats feature very heavily in my family. I am always surprised to see what posters roll out in the insult department. It really says more about them than the people they believe they are disparaging or denigrating.

ApocalipstickNow · 03/01/2025 09:04

I got loads of tattoos and piercings.

it’s nice to think I could still shock someone.

Helleofabore · 03/01/2025 09:05

Come to think about it, I think a couple of my tattooed family still attend church. Oh my…. What chaos that must cause!!

I must check if they wear pearls! Maybe they clutch their own pearls! They maybe not just on a necklace though, does that count?

Lostcat · 03/01/2025 09:19

the theatre of victimhood displayed on these GC threads...

And so it continues. It’s particularly wild since the personal abuse, the attacking, the harrassment, the pile on, the vitriol - is overwhelmingly directed against those very few posters who dare to come on these threads and challenge “gender critical” dogma .

But again, it tracks with the delusion portrait of reality ..

Btw Using an 😂 emoji is not a personal attack. If it were it would violate the talk guidelines- whereas in fact , the platform facilitates it.

Helleofabore · 03/01/2025 09:24

Actually MN is discussing behind the scenes how and whether to address the reaction button laughing choice. It became a wide spread issue across many boards.

If people feel that they have been targeted through the reaction selection the advice on a thread in site stuff is to report the post and obviously explain why you are posting your own post.

few posters who dare to come on these threads and challenge “gender critical” dogma

By saying "you're all mean!" and not making any convincing case to refute this "dogma".

personal abuse, the attacking, the harrassment, the pile on, the vitriol^^

examples? Or do you just mean that more than one person handed someone their arse, because what they were saying was incoherent nonsense? You should see other boards here!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/01/2025 09:31

I've literally never, in the last decade, heard an argument for why I should treat men as women that wasn't a manipulative appeal to be "kind".

It’s not at all surprising that the posters who believe woman and man are a pick ‘n’ mix selection of stereotypes don’t understand that actually women come with a variety of personalities, looks, beliefs and values. Even those pesky ‘terf’ women.

FlowchartRequired · 03/01/2025 09:34

Can someone please give me the official list of this GC dogma. I haven't seen one so I don't know if I agree with it or not.

It's so teenage.

Women saying no is 'vitriolic.'

I think if you posted a lol emoji as a response to certain sensitive posts here (either because personally sensitive or in terms of membership of a protected group, or about a polarising violent conflict such as Israel/Palestine. it would be considered trolling and harassment and you'd be deleted or even banned.

Context is everything.

It is very telling. They think the women here are old-fashioned prudes who can't work a phone.

Perhaps they should pay more attention.

Ah yes, but who is the judge of that? And how/ where is the line drawn?

I certainly have been gaining increasing insight. For a while now.
