> women start thread discussion on an issue of importance to women
> random person butts in to lecture women on how they shouldn't dare to talk about an issue of importance to them because the poor menz and their feelings are always way more important
> random person gets their arse handed to them on a plate by witty, well-informed, well-researched women
> so that means it must be a day ending in y

The topic was quickly changed when I gave evidence of a man with gender critical views threatening violence towards women and trans women.

Funny.

Was it the 'durr!' one?

DeanElderberry · 19/09/2024 16:16

has anyone collected their £1,000,000 for identifying the transphobic writings by the cormoran strike woman?

(Why aren't we using her name, has she gone Voldemort?)

Snowypeaks · 19/09/2024 16:17

Yes, it was supposed to be the "durr" one, I'm pretty sure. Which was satirical.

Mumsnet formatting problem, not mine.

Copy and paste them into the address bar they should work.

I've made a couple police reports for hate-motivated threats against LGBT people or against immigrants (there's a lot of that on twitter atm), yes. As for making report to twitter I think that's now a waste of time.

I haven't seen any "death threats" towards the harry potter woman. I have seen plenty of people call her a TERF/bigot/homophobe/transphobe/obsessed with genitalia which frankly I think is a reasonable observation of her postings over the past 5 or so years.

And noone has ever been banned from twitter for misgendering anyone, even before Musk bought it there was barely any moderation.

'The Harry Potter woman'? That's a new one - normally TRA's are desperately trying to divorce JKR from her work.

And no theats against JKR ....really?

Personally, I'm reassured by the arguments that we can dismiss a majority of dehumanising political propaganda as "not to be taken seriously". See the site I link above, for example - or, indeed, much of this delightful genre throughout history. If you do find you struggle as you scroll through any, then Christinapple's words, echoed below, should offer considerable reassurance.

You'll notice that many, thankfully, are quite badly drawn.

Others such as the uniformed vulture I link directly to, would have raised considerable logistics and practicality. After all, how would one get it to wear the cap? and what if it didn't want to pounce on a skull?

In summary, the people of the time really shouldn't have taken any of them credible - regardless of whether they were supposedly being "targetted" at.

(Alternatively, we could unite in condemning all instances of dehumanising propaganda - whether or not they happen to align with our personal perspectives and/or prejudices - as reflecting some of the very worst instincts of humanity).

Why is anyone still wasting energy and time on that fruity person?

They're clearly just here to suck life and energy from those who respond. It's like having our own little board Dementor.

My Patronus is a carrot cake. Begone, foul demon.

I know. I know. But sometimes the mad bastardry is just too much to ignore.

If we're doing cakes as Patronuses, I bagsy an opera cake.

Re: no death threats agains the "harry potter woman", there is a site chock full of receipts, but for some reason I can't find it. Instead I'll link to this, which injects welcome humour into a grim situation:

ILikeDungs · 19/09/2024 17:33

I would not take a crayon drawing of a guillotine carried around on a piece of cardboard credible regardless who it was supposedly "targeted" at

Pretending not to take the sign "decapitate Terfs" seriously even if it said "decapitate Transpeople", but thinking the comedian Graham Linehan seriously would have "durr...killed them". They can't be sending their best, surely?

Stop it Chris, you're killing me! To be clear, not really. It's boring now.

We'd be here all night and all day tomorrow listing and linking all the death, rape and violence threats sent to JKR and women who refused to call TW women on Twitter pre Elon add in the receipts of all the reports and the fact none of the perpetrators were banned and you could add in another day at least.

Twitter HQ UK personnel were called to a Parliamentary Select Committee about it it was that bad.

I know the site of which you speak but cant remember its name.
There were 1000's and they were eye wateringly violent and sexually grostesque, threats so bad that Id never seen anything like it before.

I bet someone here must know it, it was around about 2021 -2022 I think when people were collecting data about tra threats to women.
There were so many, and also tra crimes being ascribed to women, but this one was specifically about threats to jk

Absolutely horrible abuse. Nasty, impoverished, cheap, violent and hateful language used again and again and again against JKR. As if making a tsunami of poison would wash away the truth, cleanse the hated Other of her loathsome integrity. But poison doesn't wash anything away. It poisons everything it touches, and is contagious, so that the people who don't think, simply react, will also join in with the lynch-mob. It is spiteful and murderous and terrible.

JK Rowling is brave and true and honest. I so admire her.

I received a death threat just last week from a racist who thought I was Indian (I'm not) because I spoke up against the racism currently happening on Twitter.

Where's my BBC article? Or do you need to be a billionaire to get one?

"Can't be arsed."

Is this the gender critical reply when evidence is provided they don't want to hear?

Death threats are dreadful. You could certainly contact the BBC. But I mean, there's probably articles about JRK because of the amount of rape and death threats she's had. Enough to 'paper her house' I believe.

It's a weird fascination that TRA's have about JKR being a billionaire. 1. She's not - she's given such a fuck tonne of money to charities including rape crisis services that she's merely a millionaire. 2. Is it a woman having her own money, that she made herself, that gets up TRA's noses so much?

'Can't be arsed'

Did you quote someone else by accident? I didn't say that.

I think what really winds them up - beyond the usual misogyny - is the fact that she's not just rich, she's so mind bogglingly, in your face, fuck you rich that she never ever has to work again, that even if she did never work again she'd still be earning more money than she knows how to spend through royalties, and that's what gives her the power to speak up against this. Because nearly everyone else has a mortgage and bills to pay and they just can't afford to lose their livelihood by pointing out that the emperor is stark bollock naked.

And then to add insult to injury, not only will she not fucking shut up and they cannot make her fucking shut up, but she's still writing books and having her work adapted into films and TV series and computer games and people are still fucking buying them. Why are people still fucking buying her work? Haven't they got the message?

Even thirty something non binary millennials who are you to their eyeballs in preferred pronouns are still fucking buying Hogwarts Legacy and then making apologetic donations to trans charities to try and offset their terrible crimes because they love Harry Potter so much.

No wonder the trans activists are fucking raging. She's unsilenceable and uncancellable.

Ironically I think the fact that these American 35 year old babies sheep millennials love Harry Potter so much contributes to the amount of slagging off they do. Because they know they'll be social pariahs if they don't hate JK Rowling but they still love Potter, so they have to say, "Obviously JK Rowling is a hateful bigot and I'm so disappointed that she turned out to be Voldemort" in some public act of verbal self-flaggelation before they're allowed to continue to enjoy Potter.

I mean, they could just fucking grow up and find some new books, but there we have it.

Catiette · 19/09/2024 19:13

@Christinapple

The threats of violence against JKR and decapitate TERF signs are horrendous.

Lineham's comment was also, in my view - while pretty standard idiomatic language that wouldn't usually be taken as an actual threat - still really inappropriate and unsettling to see on a written public forum like Twix.

The death threat you received was shocking, and I'm so sorry to hear that.

All these things can be true, and all should be acknowledged.
