I have never felt a punch like this’ – Carini

Words fail I'm so angry, but by god she is brave.
Personally I feel sick and 'triggered' it reminds me of the first time an ex punched me on the thigh, I couldnt get over how much it hurt or the enormous bruise from knee to hip. I know there is a general thread on this but its so important it deserves multiple threads. I hope Carinis decision to stop the fight so very publicly makes a difference.
Meanwhile Khelif crows “I am here for gold,” “I will fight anybody, I will fight them all.”
Not the REMOTEST hint of sportsmanlike conduct.
I vote we write to VIiner en masse and lay some responsibility at her feet.
Actually EVERY editor, The Indy NYT WAPO etc
I am incandescent

By that token why should anyone play any sport?
Why hit a ball over and back? Why swim? Why jump (gymnastics, athletics etc)?

None of those sports involve people deliberately beating each other up.

Which woman does this man get to abuse fight next?

Littlewhingingfucker · 01/08/2024 18:16

ChildlessCatLadiesRuleOK · 01/08/2024 17:59

I haven't seen the fight, but nobody has to participate in a 'sport' that basically consists of people hitting each other.

Nobody has to hunt, fish or shoot, but people do. Nobody has to take part in equestrian sports, but they do. Rugby is a dangerous sport that people don't need to do but choose to anyway. We don't need to run marathons (except in very limited circumstances) but some people do.
Nobody has to take part in any sport at all, but humans have free will, choice, differing natural physical ability and competitive spirits. Boxing can be done relatively safely, that's why there are strict rules about competitive boxing, wearing gloves and protective head guards etc. There are also categories for weight ensuring fair matches and until recently there was a diversion by sex, male and female, in recognition of the physical advantages of being male.

I'd definitely tune in if he did though.

The Italian boxer did the right thing and abandoned the match. The more women that refuse to fight those with XY chromosomes or abandon matches within a minute the less able these people will be able to continue this farce.

I agree, I hope others will follow this example.

If they are school kids in the US then they cop death threats and ruined careers, but yes its good to do it if you have a very high profile game with lots of press.

If the Olympics' gave out medals for vapid and worthless comments you'd win Gold. 🥱

You know what I would really love? For Khelif's next victim competitor to get all the way to the edge of the ring all pumped up and seemingly ready to go. And then at the last second step aside and have the comparable weight boxer from her country's men's team step up instead. They'd both be disqualified but it would be so worth it!

I'm a woman who finds boxing barbaric. I don't think the participants are best placed to complain if it turns out to be more barbaric than they expected.

I agree with some of what you say- I also find boxing barbaric and can't understand why it is a sport or why anyone would choose to take part.
BUT
It is still utter madness that women are expected to compete against men in anything physical. It isn't fair and it's really dangerous in this case.
You can dislike boxing but still hold the view that the world has gone mad.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/08/2024 18:34

I don't think you've given the most telling quotes, OP.

Try these -

"I don't know what the truth is. I don't care. I just want to win."

vs

'I had to preserve my life'

Elbone · 01/08/2024 18:36

Khelif stopped briefly to speak to the BBC: “I am here for gold,” the Algerian said. “I will fight anybody, I will fight them all.”

… except other men, it seems

Well, quite.

And if he did, he wouldn't win.

Further to my point about the media, get a look at how the Hollywood reporter frames ithe headline

Could you pick a more exploitational sleazier headline?
""J.K. Rowling Misgenders Female Olympian as Boxing Controversy Unfolds in Paris"'
Its obvious you want to make a bang at your new job.

Editors like you are responsible globally for this ideology grabbing hold and always at the expense of women.

There is no sportsmanship, you are backing a misogynistic movement of a like that hasn't been seen.
Shame on you, you are not journalists but propagandists.

I watched that woman collapse to her knees and cry, and I cried too.

And there's still people more concerned about the man's feelings and needs than about the woman whose nose he broke, and who as world class, highly experienced Olympic standard woman boxer had to make the decision to throw the match in under a minute because he was so dangerous.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 01/08/2024 18:39

I have noticed today that the comments have moved away from “but how does it affect yooou?” Because the optics of a woman being punched in the face by a man are so bad too “boxers beat each other up, I can’t believe it’s allowed to happen but as it does anyone participating deserves what they get”

SoundTheSirens · 01/08/2024 18:44

I hate boxing too, but as it’s legal and an Olympic sport the least you should be able to expect is that fairness will prevail and that there should never be a situation where a woman is expected to get into the ring with a man.

I stand with Angela Carini.

Exactly 100% this

Snowypeaks · 01/08/2024 18:45

It's very reminiscent of:

Us: Men shouldn't be in women's prisons.
Them: Nobody should be in prison - I'm anti-carceral.

Us: Men are raping and sexually assaulting women in prison
Them: OMG, they're women! And anyway, if you commit a crime you deserve to be punished, so...

I compete in Brazilian juijitsu and I would never fight a biological male. It is simply not a fair or safe fight.

My bones break easier, I am weaker and weight cutting is far harder for women
