Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

1.6k comments at time.of writing. I didn't read them all, but for as far as I scrolled it was disagreement all the way down.

MarieDeGournay · 31/08/2024 12:49

Any list of successful women seems to have at least one 'woman' in it😡
It has become a cliché by now, hopefully the fad will pass soon...

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 31/08/2024 22:11

They'll twig it's not edgy when everyone does it.

Kucinghitam · 01/09/2024 10:07

Long discussion about the state of children's gender "medicine", with experts from the Australian Doctors Federation and Helen Joyce. I have not googled to see if the Australian Doctors Federation are Bad People Because Righteous Reasons, and frankly I don't give a damn. The content is what matters, and it is heartbreaking.

I’m not a regular on this thread, though I’ve been around the boards years with lots of names.

I wanted a quick sense check, if you can help. Do you think modding has changed again? I’m noticing lots of deletions, not just on the feminism boards.

I’ve been warned about a comment I made on AIBU to a poster that was going hammer and tongs for the OP (attacking OP’s always brings out my defensive side).

Has anyone else noticed or am I nastier than I used to be? I’m considering flouncing (but without the drama. A slow sideways sidle maybe).

Kucinghitam · 01/09/2024 12:17

@SensibleSigma I also have got the impression that there are a lot of deletions lately. I'm not sure it's because of a change in modding, although it would be interesting to make a study.

It could be because this topic now regularly escapes into the notice of the general public (which The Righteous have previously been good at keeping quiet - i.e. the Dentons strategy). Which means more "normie" posters are commenting, more robustly. And also means The Righteous must work harder at piling in to snow all the threads with look-over-there-squirrels and mass-reporting everything that could be even vaguely misrepresented.

The last week to ten days has seemed a bit odd. More deletions of innocuous posts. More coat traily topics in FWR. Some sexual or at least sex-adjacent topics in chat, which I don't remember before.

I thought it was just the end of the school and college holidays, but maybe it's something else.

anyolddinosaur · 01/09/2024 19:02

Some of our regular posters probably are off school or college at the moment so more time on their hands for mischief.

Not permitted to say anything critical of the mods.

Remembering Lillian Wyles, and the other pioneering women who fought for a place in the Met: x.com/TheAttagirls/status/1829768754143613375?

anyolddinosaur · 02/09/2024 08:38

Hope there is a blue plaque for her somewhere? Women are under-represented.

SqueakyDinosaur · 02/09/2024 11:33

I was working at the Met in 2019 on a project when it was the 100th anniversary of women joining. To give them credit, it was marked very thoroughly and respectfully with displays in several of their big offices, and somewhere I even have a rather nice commemorative lapel pin.

SqueakyDinosaur · 02/09/2024 20:46

Oh that's glorious!

MouseMinge · 02/09/2024 20:56

It really is. It's tickled me so much, not least because they didn't get away with it because they were too attractive.

Britinme · 02/09/2024 21:56

I love it! Oh the delicious irony!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 02/09/2024 22:09

Sorry, this one's hideous, but I think important to share. The incredibly brave woman has waived anonymity - and privacy screens in court - and wants people to know what these men did.

Specific relevance to the FWR board - he (and as a result more than 50 others) was caught because he was trying to film in a women's single sex changing room. In a mixed area he might have not attracted attention.

lcakethereforeIam · 02/09/2024 22:25

I've seen the headlines but didn't want to read the specifics. I vaguely remember when the story originally broke. There's several ghastly stories in the news at the moment, a woman in Poland allegedly held captive and abused for four years (giving birth to at least one child), a woman in Italy out looking at the stars and stabbed for no discernable reason, and the three children found dead with their father (I'm praying without much hope for a carbon monoxide leak and not the usual 'tragedy'). That's ignoring Afghanistan, I can't even look at those threads.

SqueakyDinosaur · 02/09/2024 22:46

The French one reminds me of the first part of the Alan Bennett Talking Heads "Nights in the Gardens of Spain". It's utterly horrific.

MouseMinge · 03/09/2024 01:27

The French one is horrific but she is pretty bloody wonderful. I hope her husband spends the rest of his life behind bars.

I'm afraid that when I heard that three boys and their father were found dead at their home in Staines my immediate thought was that it was yet another murder suicide. The police have had previous dealings with the family which seems to make it more likely. It's just horrible and no doubt if it definitely is what we think there'll be some stuff about what a lovely man/dad he was before this happened.

Kucinghitam · 04/09/2024 08:09

Last night I went to a talk by Susan Dalgety (Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht), in a lovely intimate women-only space. It was a marvellous experience (despite me being my usual socially-awkward self) and I got a signed copy of the book!

I just read an article that reminded me of a phrase I'd not heard for years

“if you can’t have what you like, then you must learn to like what you have”

Should be dusted off and used more often.

I've just spent a few minutes looking at Prof. Francione's tweets. He's got no time for gender bollocks. One of the good guys?

I thought so. Many of us thought Gary was. But he attacked a long term follower who was upset at men mocking women (womanface) with drag and extreme risque dressing (ie men in fishnets with their cocks half showing) and told her she was wrong for seeing it as an issue. She posted pics of these transwomen dressed in really offensive and sexual way and refused to answer or even acknowledge her when she asked him. She's a rape survivor, and he knew that. He instead snarked on her with a fellow tweeter (who immediately suspiciously appears straight after him to post a link to any news he tweets, which makes me think this other female tweeter is him, since it's a matter of seconds/minutes within tweets) suggesting she was an extreme GC and brainwashed for not liking womanface. He really turned on her. I stopped following him after that. He really showed his true colours.

Unfortunately too many men who come across as 'allies' are only doing so for their own reasons, mainly to big note themselves and get in on the 'pro-women' action and will drop those same women the moment one questions them.

duc748 · 06/09/2024 11:08

Honestly, I find the whole concept of 'allies' to be absolutely toe-curling. In either direction. I wouldn't dream of calling myself this daft, self-important term.

lcakethereforeIam · 06/09/2024 11:22

@CrochetForLife bugger. I feared as much, hence the question mark. I don't want to be cynical, I really don't🙁 It's just crumbs from the table from these 'allies'.

Yes, it's cringeworthy. 'Allies' seem to think it gives them the right to berate anyone who disagrees with the cause, even though it doesn't directly affect them.
