Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Thanks, Bint that's a handy recap, or a good primer for anyone new to this.

Does this mean the Supreme Court ruling is imminent? I don't feel optimistic about the outcome.

You can't be the only one on tenterhooks. Someone hoped that, in the case that it goes badly, the judges may recommend a Parliamentary review of the law.

Interesting article about Naomi Cunningham https://www.holyrood.com/inside-politics/view,naomi-cunningham-im-fuelled-by-rage-and-ive-been-lucky

SinnerBoy · 08/03/2025 10:46

Thanks for that engaging article. My main takeaway is an inability to imagine Naomi saying "innit."

😆

NoBinturongsHereMate · 08/03/2025 14:33

Very interesting article. I think her mother would probably have had quite a lot in common with my grandmother.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 08/03/2025 17:59

WTF?! Anyone know any more about this?

Women gathered in Darlington to celebrate International Women’s Day are awaiting the arrival of the police. They have been told it is illegal for women to gather together without men present.

Welcome to Darlington, twinned with Kabul....

NoBinturongsHereMate · 08/03/2025 20:11

One day I hope the adults who did this to Avery Jackson, and to far too many other children, will be held.to account in a court of law. And by their medical or other professional bodies, where relevant.

@SinnerBoy Someone said it to her - so she was quoting. 😁

People have been telling women they cant meet without men for years. They can fuck off.

SqueakyDinosaur · 08/03/2025 21:54

More from Darlington. FUCKING HELL is all I can say.

Guardian reader telling us how hateful we are. And this person must be an actual grown-up.

It is so irritating to read “Transphobia is rife now”. It is not true. No one cares if her adult son wants to be as he thinks women are. They do care if this man who is a transwoman says he actually is a woman in all circumstances, and expects to be treated as though that is true.

Ffs. Sex is the relevant protected characteristic for a group of women wanting to meet.

DeanElderberry · 09/03/2025 07:38

But the woman asking 'what about freedom of speech?' seems unaware that there is no right to freedom of speech in the UK. It's an American concept and those of us in the Anglosphere like to imagine it is transferrable, but it isn't.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 09/03/2025 08:32

But we do have Article 10 rights to freedom of expression, which amounts to much the same thing.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 09/03/2025 09:21

Testing I can post - there's a new IPad Mumsnet app which doesn't let me post. I am writing this on, I think, the phone app and it looks like I still can post on that - but the proof of the pudding will be if this post shows. I'll try to delete it if it does.

DeanElderberry · 09/03/2025 09:21

The ECHR has helped, but there are still DSMA notices. I have no confidence that gender issues haven't managed to entangle themselves there, will woolly thinking around 'security' and 'safety'.

In Ireland too - I don't even know what the system is called, but reporting on gender issues is locked down as tight as the IRA and INLA were. Some things cannot be spoken.

Had to fill in a survey for work and was pleased to see the responses to this question:

What are your preferred pronouns?
He/him/his
He/them
She/her/hers
She/them
They/them/theirs
No pronouns
Prefer not to say

I felt included as I could tick "no pronouns"

That could be tricky for them. I hope you objected if anyone referred to you as you, yours, ours, we, us… or included you in indefinite pronouns such as nobody, everybody, anyone….

Interesting little video on male/female difference in arm action in sprinters. He spends almost all his time in the what rather tha the why, but it's a nice illustration of how the different body proportions affect aspects you might not immediately think of.

In yesterday's Scottish Parliament debate on single sex spaces, MSP Tess White said only 13 of 243 Scottish secondary schools have single-sex toilets.

That's 5.3%. No, the decimal point isn't a typo.

Naturally, one wonders about the figures for England and Wales.
