Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I can't see the Ninny Kumar - Sham Fake video, but from LHB's twitter thread and the precis here, it's probably for the best.

One for the junk sports science fans - short, underweight men who hardly train aren't quite as good at volleyball as tall, fit women who train three and a half times as much: x.com/EvaPoen/status/1893296304584831183?t=WAulpeD1vm12bi8rzF3M4A&s=19

duc748 · 24/02/2025 09:45

What on earth is the point? Junk science indeed.

I think I spotted him in the thread, but don't know if he's done his own post.

There are links to posts on X and BlueSky at the bottom.

Between 18 and 35 years old. Ages similar between groups (p=0.07). P=0.05 is usually used as the cut-off for statistical significance. But with sample size of only 7 or 8 the confidence intervals will be very wide. In other words the groups differed in age.

I don't know if this has been mentioned upthread but this is a fascinating story about Renee Richards a mtof 'transsexual' who played on the women's tennis tour in the 1970s & 80s. He now accepts that men taking cross sex hormones retain an advantage over women in sport and puts his perceived parity with female athletes down to the fact that he was considerably older than the women on the tour. Richards' statement is at the same time interesting, infuriating (he was upset that women competitors wouldn't shake his hand) and confirmation that the terfs are always right. www.si.com/tennis/renee-richards-shares-the-gender-policy-recommendation-she-made-to-the-wta

There's chat from Wings that Alison Thewliss has been hired by Rape Crisis Scotland.

For anyone unaware of who Alison Thewliss is, she was one of the SNP ministers (along with Stewart McDonald, Kirsten Oswald and Kaukab Stewart) pictured at a demo, standing proudly under a sign which proclaimed 'decapitate terfs'

No nepotism, never.

JFC.

What's she been hired to do?

Waitwhat23 · 25/02/2025 18:52

Not sure what she's been hired to do but her engagement was brought up by Tess White in Parliament as part of a question about accountability and transparency. Video in link. Kaukab Stewart waffles meaningless nonsense for most of her answer so the question about Thewliss from Tess is towards the end and is shut down. So much for transparency -

Good grief, have they learned nothing from the ERCC debacle?

The BBC can't help itself. The charges were for rape of a child FFS. There was no need to use female pronouns but they do it anyway. And I note the headline puts the space between trans and woman.

THIS WAS NOT A WOMAN.

duc748 · 26/02/2025 12:25

'Transwoman' is bad, but 'trans woman' is certainly worse. Nobody's forcing the BBC to use these formulations; they're choosing to.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 26/02/2025 12:50

Not good - but at least there's an unambiguous photo and they're not simply saying 'woman'. More clarity than we often get from the BBC.

Hmmm.

Androgynous?

Are they BLIND?

There a couple of obvious issues with the idea of androgynous here.

We are back into 'short hair = boy' dumbness on this one aren't we?

Twiggy got wood?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 28/02/2025 01:26

Even some of the TwiX replies arguing this is daft are giving her haircut rather more importance than it deserves. 'Breaking boundaries', they say.

At around the time Twiggy had short hair, so did both my grandmothers. As did my great grandmother 30 years earlier - and she wasn't an edgy fashion model, she was a coalminer's wife in a small Derbyshire village. That boundary had been well and truly smashed before Twiggy was born.

Interesting bit of obliviousness on BBC Breakfast this morning. Some chap (youngish) on a mission to combat loneliness by stopping random strangers in parks and offering them a cup of tea from his thermos and a chat on a bench. Even with the backup of an obvious TV crew, rather than just 'strange man with his phone on a tripod' he only had 1 woman stop, compared with multiple men.

No acknowledgement at all of this imbalance - or mention of reasons why women on their own might, just possibly, think twice about accepting an unknown drink from an unknown man.
