Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

An interesting breakdown of Lia/William Thomas's swimming career that clearly shows up the 'no advantage' lie: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1876378525726564738.html

How he is is not dying of shame
I cannot imagine.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 08/01/2025 10:37

That's the strange thing about these men, they don't seem to know any shame. Why not? I don't understand.

lcakethereforeIam · 08/01/2025 10:38

Some blokes get off on being humiliated. Perhaps that's it?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/01/2025 10:51

They also get off on the gaslighting. See Duper's Delight.

That is the whole attraction of being seen as a woman for many, because to them it is humiliating and therefore arousing

Extraordinary, that awful saccharine voice supposedly sounding so reasonable misting over everything. I wonder what the outcome will be.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 11/01/2025 16:20

For those who have TwiX (it's too long and branching to screenshot or get threadreader to unroll) Dennis Noel Kavanagh and Bev Jackson vs UK Humanists yesterday was great. The former in particular gave a masterclass in 'polite but persistent', and argued them into the ground.

MouseMinge · 11/01/2025 22:26

When she finishes not answering the question and some of the audience applaud. My god the rage would have been strong in me at that point. She doesn't once use the word woman without it having trans in front of it. Talking about the cameras it's not women as well but people as well. She has drunk all of the Kool-aid.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 12/01/2025 11:50

I just don't understand why some women are so misogynistic.

Maybe it's a good career move, in some cases.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 13/01/2025 08:46

Especial hatred is reserved by me for Lisa Nandy, and her refusal to impose any sort of sports boycott of Afghanistan. And her previous re men in women's prisons.

I'm in a discussion group - all women and the next topic is misogyny and whether it's worse now than in the past. Probably fair to say it is in Afghanistan.

The idea is that we do research beforehand, and so we learn a lot from each other. So for background, I'm reading this:

https://www.philippagregory.com/books/normal-women

I haven't got very far but it is interesting - that in 13C a lot of women seem to have been in business- there were even female attorneys at law (they were sort of precursors to solicitors https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attorneyatt_law)

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2025 10:16

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 12/01/2025 11:50

I just don't understand why some women are so misogynistic.

Unfortunately, it's not just [some?many?] men who think the female of the species are not-fully-human, partially-sentient service bipeds for the physical, psychological and emotional use of the actual proper people. There are plenty of women who think the same.

When I was celebrating having got into Cambridge, my paternal grandmother asked me if I felt "guilty about taking a place from a boy who needed it".

She was a difficult and unhappy woman. And born in 1908.
