Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I've not been able to get into any archive links from here for a month or so.

duc748 · 11/10/2024 00:35

lcakethereforeIam · 11/10/2024 00:28

Which one do you use Duc? Archive.ph and Archive.is have both been unreliable recently.

ph, @lcakethereforeIam . I just tried a random link off the Telegraph website from Google, and it seemed to work OK.

archive.ph/T2RzL

NoBinturongsHereMate · 11/10/2024 01:04

Not for me. Blank screen followed by a 'took too long to respond', same as usual.

duc748 · 11/10/2024 02:05

Then I dunno what to suggest, Bint. I'm no IT guy. I'm on a lap-top, not a mobe; I've always assumed (maybe wrongly) that that's easier.

Britinme · 11/10/2024 03:32

That archive link worked for me.

lcakethereforeIam · 11/10/2024 07:47

The archive.ph works for me more often than it doesn't. I was just able to retrieve and read this article

https://archive.ph/CQQuM

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/10/carol-voderman-keir-starmer-free-glasses-woman-lord-alli/ I always try to provide the direct link jic someone wants to open it in some other fashion

Hmm Carol, assuming Kier's gender. For all Carol knows he could be a closeted tw and, if Kier is, then all the dodginess would be understandable because he she had his her fluffy head turned. Just wait until he she retires from politics, can be his her true self and, finally, be recognised as Labour's first female Prime Minister.

Anyway i digress. Yesterday I tried to read an article, both archive sites at least opened but my link was no.2008 in the list and stayed there until I got bored.

Carol Vorderman: Starmer accepting free clothes would be understandable if he was a woman

The Left-wing activist added that it was a ‘rookie error’ for the PM to accept £2,400 from Lord Alli to pay for glasses

Great XX sports ad.

Apparently coercive control by a boyfriend - even when fatal - doesn't count as domestic abuse if the victim is too young. https://x.com/David_Challen/status/1844118672228438065?

There a sculpture unveiled in Leeds. The design is, for me, a bit meh but the concept comes from a good place. I'm sure the women whose names were included and who are still with us are thrilled

https://www.ribbons-sculpture-leeds.co.uk/

If there are any men included on it, I don't know. If there are though then I hope in a few decades time there will be a programme presented by that time's Hairy Bikers say. They'll be touring the country and will break the trip to visit curiosities. If this sculpture of notable local women is featured, they might point out the oddity of the names of one or two men and how weird we were in the 2020s pretending we thought men could be women. They'll shake their heads, have a little laugh and move on.

Great XX sports ad.

Holly newton was murdered in my region, it's an awful case, even worse because he was 16 at the time when he murdered her. Apparently, the Police drove him home after an earlier incident, perhaps a night in the cells, waiting for his parents to collect him might have been instructional.

Kucinghitam · 13/10/2024 07:45

@lcakethereforeIam Oh interesting - I'll go and have a look the next time I'm in that part of the city.

Went to a great discussion evening at my newly-discovered women's only group, where I met several lesbians who were freshly back from the plague of locusts at the LGB Alliance conference. We talked so much that the session overran by over an hour - at which point I had to leave because I was about to turn into a pumpkin - possibly the chatting went on for hours more!

I can't find the right thread, the one for women's achievements, so I'll post this here. It's a blue plaque in Durham for Professor Rosemary Cramp, an archaeologist, who was the first female professor at Durham University:

https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/24635915.blue-plaque-first-female-professor-durham-university/

Among her many achievements, Professor Cramp helped to develop the university’s archaeology department and led excavations at the twin monastery of Monkwearmouth-Jarrow, home to the Venerable Bede.

DeanElderberry · 14/10/2024 09:35

Oh excellent. I knew a few blokes who had worked with her and found her slightly terrifying, always a good thing.

SinnerBoy · 14/10/2024 11:21

I remember her being on telly a couple of times, when I was younger. She certainly came across as being phenomenally well up on her subject.

WFTCHTJ · 14/10/2024 11:26

Roz Adams remedy hearing is underway, and she's giving evidence at the moment.

Thanks for that.

SqueakyDinosaur · 14/10/2024 13:57

I like that she's (RA) quoting from the James Esses apology from Metanoia, which was very well done, and comparing it to ERCC's utterly feeble acknowledgement of their own wrongdoing.

Ultimate pool women's semi final match was a surprisingly fair competition: x.com/Sorelle_Arduino/status/1845578640584585317?

duc748 · 14/10/2024 23:00

Amy is a match for any of them, but yeah, it's a joke.

lcakethereforeIam · 15/10/2024 17:07

There's a thread trending at the moment. Some poor woman trying to disengage from a fantasist who told her his wife, a marine, was shot dead in Afghanistan. Oddly, nobody has called her a bigot, or said transwidowers are widowers. I'm willing to bet there are some on that thread, calling out his nonsense, who would sing an entirely different tune if the guy had claimed to be a woman.

duc748 · 15/10/2024 17:12

I was just reading that! I wasn't surprised by the poster who commented that "ex-special forces" etc claims were common amongst exes in her friendship group. There's a lot of these fantasists about. Walts. 😄

Kucinghitam · 15/10/2024 17:51

My goodness. That poor woman, what a weirdo he is!

I've just come across an organisation I'd not heard of before, the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism! I suspected it'd be a tiny start up with delusion of grandeur. But everything has to start somewhere. Did it believe twaw? Surely not...
