Women's rights general conversations - Thread 9

Continuation of Thread 8.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

The defence barrister Geraldine Kelly told the court Kaky’s academic accomplishments as a PhD student at the University of Nottingham were “respected” and “impressive”, and that losing his job was “in itself a form of punishment”.

<sigh>

If I had a pound for every time that argument was trotted out, I could have stopped work earlier. At least the judge doesn't seem to have listened this time.

And an odd decision by the Graun to lead the story with 'former PhD student' as well. It's really not relevant.

Things the Cheltenham literary festival wishes to dissociate itself from. Guess what's top of the list. https://x.com/soniasodha/status/1842122518259175430?

It's utterly spineless. Gender critical expression should be no more "problematic" (I've come to loathe that word!) than expressions of atheism or scepticism about astrology. This kind of public distancing legitimises the hounding of people with gender critical views from public life by implying that questioning an ideology is a marker of extremism. We'll all be referred to Prevent before long.

Slightly off topic but I know I’m not the only Butler fan on this thread so thought I’d share this piece of TRSOH.

She really is the fool's fool.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 06/10/2024 14:24

'Social movements'?

mach2 · 07/10/2024 08:13

'Social movements'?

She has a sort of a point. They have embedded themselves in the social fabric but this "progressive and of the left" stuff is mental.

I'm watching this episode of TerfTV from Sall Grover. The main interview is with an extremely intelligent and knowledgeable detransitioner who looks about 12 but is in her early 20s. Her analysis is so good. Talking about gender medicine, she says it should be called "gender fraud".

DeanElderberry · 08/10/2024 07:53

That was an interesting interview. Two specific things that struck me - her analysis of how the 'Dutch protocol' developed, making it so clear that was all about facilitating and the desires of adult men - many other people have said that but her summary was good.

And that because she was in Israel and needed to get wide (including not anti-Israel) commentary on the war, the algorithm started delivering 'right wing' content which included gender critical views.

That latter point made me wonder whether Judith Butler's pro Hamas statement is going to help cook the gender goose.

Snowypeaks · 08/10/2024 08:17

Yes, so many excellent points. I was especially struck by what she said about ROGD and the lack of coming of age rituals for Western youth.

Women’s football teams refuse to play after transgender player injures opponent

At least four teams in a Sheffield women’s football league are boycotting matches after a club fielded a transgender player accused of causing a season-ending injury to an opponent.

Women’s football teams refuse to play after transgender player injures opponent

Exclusive: Clubs in Sheffield league boycotting matches over safety concerns, but player plans to pursue a case for discrimination

That story is nearly a year old although

Needham has since agreed to withdraw “for the foreseeable future,” acknowledging the “challenges faced from teams unwilling to play against us while I am on the field”, but now intends to pursue a case for discrimination.

I wonder what became of his discrimination case?

I'm also confused whenever I see the phrase 'openly trans'. If Needham was just 'trans' would he just go about dressed in typically male clothing? Or dress in stereotypically female clothing but insist he was an ordinary bloke?

lcakethereforeIam · 08/10/2024 10:31

Oh, this guy

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13897999/Transgender-footballer-boycotted-players-womens-league-plotting-return.html

Well, looks like he found some games.

Snowypeaks · 08/10/2024 10:32

I wonder what became of his discrimination case?

Bugger all, I would think. This is lawful discrimination. Join a men's team or start your own MCW team, Needham.

It's actually Rossington Ladies who could be liable for unlawful sex discrimination against the women in the squad who are losing a place to Needham, and women in other clubs whose safety is being put at risk.

DeanElderberry · 08/10/2024 10:49

That 'prostitution profile' is gross. Not someone I'd choose to share any space with.

bignosebignose · 08/10/2024 10:53

Sorry, saw it posted somewhere else and missed that it was old. Interesting to see the update from last month though, no joy with the discrimination case. Good.

SqueakyDinosaur · 08/10/2024 12:25

Does any actual woman still wear stockings and suspenders? I used to wear them in the 80s but God they were uncomfortable and fiddly!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 10/10/2024 09:15

I barely ever wear tights, never mind anything fiddlier.

Here's a horror of double mastectomy I'd not considered: https://x.com/TTExulansic/status/1843023072347234553? It doesn't necessarily remove all the milk producing tissue but does remove the route for it to get out - leading to excruciating pain for transmen, NB women who've had the surgery, or detransitioners if they later have children. What's the betting women are not fully informed about this before surgery?

weaseleyes · 10/10/2024 12:47

That's absolutely horrible, bint, and had never occurred to me.

DeanElderberry · 10/10/2024 12:53

Gender is the gift that keeps on giving, isn't it. That's horrific. The discussions about siblings have been pretty heartbreaking too.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 10/10/2024 18:05

Oh gosh, you're right, not something you think about. Those poor young women; so betrayed.

lcakethereforeIam · 10/10/2024 23:27

I was wondering why the archive sites were being slow and difficult

Boiledbeetle · 11/10/2024 00:24

I thought it was just me having that problem

duc748 · 11/10/2024 00:25

Weird, I've not had any probs with archive sites so far, and I always use the same one.

lcakethereforeIam · 11/10/2024 00:28

Which one do you use Duc? Archive.ph and Archive.is have both been unreliable recently.
