Do women in the U.K. know or care about the threat to women’s and girls rights now they’ve voted labour?

Heylo · 05/07/2024 07:14

i know the tories record on public services are abysmal and bar some genuine believers like Kemi Badenoch the tories would likely go the trans route if they thought it would buy them votes. But, currently it’s the tories who offered to protect women and girls from the trans madness. My question is - which women voted in trans loving, women - hating Labour?

we can look forward to -

  1. continued gender ideology being pumped out in schools
  2. conversion ban - you better hope your child doesn’t start questioning their gender out loud because TRA ridden schools will be referring them to gender clinics and socially transitioning them now they have a mandate
  3. same sex attracted lesbians (myself included) it’s completely game over. Keep your head down and your mouth shut. Trans identified males and their female allies have already closed down every women only night. Same sex attracted women are now labelled bigots. We are no longer welcome in London’s LGBT soup community
  4. prisons - what happens to vulnerable women? They are already disbelieved and dismissed. Now they have to endure the staring and various forms of sexual harrassment that goes with being incarcerated with men

i can only hope our political landscape mirrors America and in the same way Trump will be voted back in this year, we will have The Tories being led by Kemi back in in 4 years time.

omg I can’t believe we have to kiss goodbye to women’s rights - for the next four years

back to my original question. Apart from TRA idealouges, why have women voted these clowns in? Is it that they prioritise the Tories terrible record on public services over this? Do some women not see it as a huge issue? would love to hear from some posters who voted Labour.

Thanks & stay safe out there, as women we have woken up to a a dark chapter in history today

Don’t be ridiculous. Your post sounds-to use an old misogynistic term-hysterical. Women have been failed by the outgoing government irrespective of how many times Kemi Badenoch bangs on about culture and gender wars. Look at the number of rape convictions compared to 10 years ago-rape has been decriminalised in this country under the Tories. That alarms me more than any stories about toilets.

Moonpie6 · 05/07/2024 08:08

I voted Labour.

I don't have a clue about any of this stuff. Can someone please explain? In a simple way.

What the OP has described has just gone right over my head. I don't understand any of it.

Thanks.

I've been a woman since the day I was conceived more than 64 years ago. I have loved every minute of being a woman and have never felt disadvantaged or marginalised except in one space that is supposedly committed to equality.

Every section of society has predators and individuals who will treat others badly. There are more bad people in the non trans parts of society than in the trans parts due to sheer numbers. All women need to learn about keeping themselves safe and ensuring their daughters do the same.

Women will always fight to be equal when other women marginalise them.. this happens daily in the NHS where women are referred to by their first names and men and doctors are afforded titles. I challenge it every time. Mostly those who do it eye roll.

There is a much wider debate necessary than the trans one.

Cookiecoop · 05/07/2024 08:10

I have never ever felt a threat from a trans person but I’ve felt a huge amount of threat from austerity the Tory government caused.

Perfectly said.

For many, many reasons I'm pleased Labour won. We needed a change to try to reverse some of the terrible damage to public services done by the Tories. I'm hoping for a fairer and even greener future for the UK.

Yes I'm concerned for women's rights. I will write to my MP today. I also plan to set up a regular donation to Sex Matters because those fantastic women will be working hard to defend sex-based rights. They can do more lobbying than I can alone, although I will also continue to contact my MP at regular intervals.

I will also in my small way continue having the conversation with people around me. IRL I find many people are GC even if they are quite private about sharing their views.

Ultimately I don't believe that big changes - good or bad - will happen overnight.

Chersfrozenface · 05/07/2024 08:11

This year's Labour conference is from 22 to 25 September.

Not long to wait to see whether Labour Women's Declaration and Filia are allowed to have stalls there.

That'll be a bellwether.

If William Hill will give me odds, my bet is on 'no'.

BionicBadger · 05/07/2024 08:12

Yes I know and care OP, and I’m very depressed about waving goodbye to my rights and protections.

Katbum · 05/07/2024 08:13

For most people the issue of what rights transgender people have, and its impact on women and girls, is a very minor issue compared to the complete erosion of public services, cost of living, wage stagnation, inflation, Brexit coming home to roost, NHS in disarray, schools and universities on the brink of financial and operational collapse etc etc. I have some sympathy for your views but honestly, you are deluded if you think this issue is in any way the central thing most people are voting on. And that’s as it should be. One issue elections lead to division and hate.

SheSlays · 05/07/2024 08:13

Yes women need safe spaces. ALL women, including trans women, need safe spaces.

Trans women are no more of a threat to me than any other woman. Trans women are disproportionately vulnerable. No need to subject a vulnerable group to discrimination.

I’m currently celebrating that Tory bigots are out of power.

it would help if the people on this forum didn’t treat the rest of us as if we were imbecilic babies!
I have met precisely two trans women in my life, both seriously fucked in the head but far from dangerous.
As to the rest of them, if we all stopped paying attention to this issue 90% would lose interest and go and indulge in some other attention seeking activity.
I genuinely have no issue sharing any space with the remaining, genuine 10%.

That's nice for you. Tell that to the women locked up in prison with these men, see what they think about your disregard for their dignity and safety.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 05/07/2024 07:19

Hmm I'm not sure, I think people are starting to see the nonsense that Trans Ideology has become. Look at Scotland (where I am), the SNP have taken a beating and I'm sure the Isla Bryson incident played a part in that, buoyed up by the mentalist that is Patrick Harvey.

Hopefully women can push on Keir to ensure that women retain sex based spaces and sports and he doesn't make GRC easier, despite saying to the contrary.

He has committed to making the GRC far easier to obtain...I think it is delusional to expect he won't go through with this.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 05/07/2024 08:14

Am cautiously optimistic that Starmer has been "educated" that his most "vulnerable group ever in the whole wide world" actually contains some individuals who pose a massive threat to women and girls with the notion of "changing sex" posing a massive danger to children. And that women will not be quiet while men like him hand over women\s rights to whining men.
The press are now onto this and the steady stream of court cases - both criminal for sex offences and employment for discrimination against women holding GC views - will ensure that #nodebate is finally dead.

The new government has a shed load of critical issues to manage after the chaos of the last government. Hopefully the magnificent campaigning by women (and many men) during the election has made it clear that this issue cannot be railroaded through.

I think the important thing is to keep writing and lobbying about the real issues around this - about risks to children, about age appropriate teaching for children, about sport and prisons - not just wait for conservatives to get in. But equally in my opinion it is disastrous to be radical or extreme the other way, to antagonise adults who make choices you don't agree with is not the way to go either. It is better to focus on the key issues and problems and propose good solutions.

I am not hugely hopeful about Starmer, I think that he lacks clarity over issues, though I am hoping also that that was just in opposition, and whether he does good or not good, I think it is important to keep communicating what we think is necessary and vital to the running of the country.

Use good judgement and communicate effectively and and he and everyone else will have no choice but to listen.

"Trans women" are men. If you've come to believe these men are women that just shows you have some awfully sexist beliefs.

Exactly what @Katbum says. There are many more larger inherent problems in today's society which will directly affect all our children's futures. Fixating on this single issue is ignoring 99% of what happens in daily life.

Toomanysquishmallows · 05/07/2024 08:17

i voted for a small party , my concern about labour and the gender issue , was being expected to believe a lie , that people can change sex , and if they are willing to lie about that , what else will they lie about ? We have just had 14 years of lies from the conservatives.

Matronic6 · 05/07/2024 08:17

Fucking hell. Millions of children are living in poverty, education is on its knees, the NHS is close to breaking point, sick people are not able to get the help they need, people can't pay to put on heating on winter, young people can't afford homes but OP is concerned about dating events. The fucking privilege from these kind of posts is sickening.

Also all the things you were complaining about, happened under a Tory government.

otnot · 05/07/2024 08:18

BlowDryRat · 05/07/2024 07:22

I think the result is the best we could have hoped for: a change in government but no groundswell of popular support for Labour. They do not have the mandate in terms of the popular vote to push through unpopular policies like anti-women GRC reforms.

Sorry but they really, really do have a mandate - whilst the numbers make the anti-trans vote look substantial, in reality pro-trans parties now have (at time of writing) 520 more seats than anti-trans parties. They can decide to go full SNP-style trans policy or more and there's no political way to stop them. Starmer's celebrating like he's won because people love his policies, I strongly doubt he'll ever acknowledge how little support he actually has.

24hoursfromtulsa · 05/07/2024 08:18

Not read the whole thread to see if it's been mentioned before, but thought it was interesting to see it reported that Labour have hardly increased their share of the vote at all (except in Scotland where Labour trounced the SNP).

The Tories lost because so many of their supporters voted for Reform.

Of course our FPTP system means we still have 5 years of Labour's anti- women policies to come...

ZeldaFighter · 05/07/2024 08:18

My husband has seen 2 transwomen in his giant workplace. Apparently several years ago, a male transitioned at my workplace but left shortly after - Apparently the females were unhappy about Dave now Davina in the ladies toilets!

I know no trans people although I saw a couple when out in bigger towns and cities.

However - I see hundreds of kids in schools, hundreds of medical patients and thousands of people with low paying jobs and/or high mortgages.

I'm a leftwing feminist. I think we need to sort out the problems for everyone first. EVERYONE is suffering under the Tories and I don't even believe them about women's rights anyway. It's just pandering to their right-wing base.

Feelsodrained · 05/07/2024 08:18

Ah well maybe we can have a functioning NHS and education sector though. And not have millions of women using food banks to avoid their families starving.
