Been thinking about this horrendous incident. Why do innocents have to suffer ( majority female victims it appears) because a man has lost control of himself? Why didn't this nasty man just fuck somewhere and end himself quietly? I keep looking at photos of the mother who has been murdered and my thoughts are with her baby who is fighting for his or her life, and of course the other victims and their families.

Oh OK,

Well that's me convinced by your persuasive argument.

changeofusername · 14/04/2024 09:10

Open your bloody brain

People on the other side of the world didn't experience this at the same fucking time. It was hours after that people left the shopping centre who were involved directly

Police take statements, paramedics check people

Otter2 · 14/04/2024 09:15

I wept when I heard than a 9 month old baby girl had been targeted by this bastard. And I wept again when I heard that her mother had died.

I am so glad that the officer who shot him was female and that apparently she did not fuck about either.

OvaHere · 14/04/2024 09:21

It's just horrendous. I can't imagine the terror of that poor mother trying to save herself and her little baby.

The people who tried to stop him were very brave especially the female officer who did manage to take him down.

But you still haven’t said what point you are trying to make?

OutOfTheHouse · 14/04/2024 09:26

Tell me, when the Dunblane massacre happened or the shootings in Hungerford, were there people blaming various groups and coming up with conspiracies then?

Kalevala · 14/04/2024 09:28

Australia is now up to 23 women killed by violence so far this year, just 15 weeks 😔.

I don't think the Internet had quite gotten into it's stride when they happened.

I'm sick of men taking their problems, their inadequacies out on other people. Too often it's women and children. I try to remember there were good people there who helped and one brave woman who was able to stop him.

What source are you using that ISN'T media? just so us sheeple can be as well informed as you.

I feel so sorry for those poor people, just out doing a bit of shopping and then this terrifying attack out of nowhere. Looking at stills of the footage, seems that he was walking around holding this massive knife in full view!

Well done to Officer Amy Scott. I hope she isn't hard on herself. She had no choice but to shoot in self defence.

I don't want to downplay the trauma that police officers might feel when killing in the line of duty, but she should feel very proud of herself. Police have firearms training for a reason. This is that reason.

If he was deliberately attacking women then it is very fitting that a woman taking him out was the last person he ever saw.

MarieDeGournay · 14/04/2024 10:12

The killer's family released this statement
“We are absolutely devastated by the traumatic events that occurred in Sydney. Joel’s actions were truly horrific, and we are still trying to comprehend what has happened. He has battled with mental health issues since he was a teenager.
We are in contact with the both the New South Wales police force and Queensland police service and have no issues with the police officer who shot our son as she was only doing her job to protect others and we hope she is coping alright.”

A dignified response: they must also be suffering enormously.

bluecomputerscreen · 14/04/2024 10:15

he hasn't 'lost control'. he is 100% in control which is part of this problem.
he does this because he can and no one wants to see that because it's normal that a man sees hs woman as his posession.

The fact that he targeted women shows that he didn’t lose control at all.

It wasn’t random. He walked into a shopping centre with a knife looking for women, to stab them.

BobShark · 14/04/2024 10:27

I live in bondi,
Many friends were there at Westfield when this happened, a couple even witnessed the events.
It has shocked and traumatised a small community that we are, as a Brit who has lived here in this area 15 years, I've never felt unsafe. And would happily walk home alone at night.

The local media here has strongly suggested this is not related to any religious ideology and are pointing towards a mental illness.

Social media locally has been full of fear that this is somehow related to an attack on the large Jewish community that live here.

I think from what we know so far, it was more likely that the women were easier targets than the men,

I'm not sure how we will recover from this, one of the women killed is a part of our surf club, with two young kids, I see her every Sunday at training.

Two security guards were attached, the one named so far was working his first day on the job.

The police officer was so brave, she happened to be on patrol in the area and took the attacker on alone with no idea if there was any backup in the way.

The fact a tiny baby was stabbed is unthinkable, two men stepped in and took care of her when her mother couldn't any longer.

I don't think it's helpful right now to speculate on the motives of the attacker, the police are working round the clock to uncover any potential motives.

Motorina · 14/04/2024 10:29

This bit made me tear up:

"He just started floating towards us and all I heard was 'put it down' and then she shot him," he told ABC News Australia.

"Then she walked over and gave him CPR. He had a big blade on him - she chucked the knife away. He looked like he was on a killing spree."

I'm not sure that in that situation I could so quickly switch from dealing with the aggressor to trying to save him. Huge respect to her for her skill and professionalism.

There's always one ....Columbo fan?

Deepdarkforest · 14/04/2024 10:39

Maybe this sounds awful but I don’t really care what his motives were as the outcomes were the same.

RainSodOff · 14/04/2024 10:41

@BobShark sending unmumsnetty hugs to all devastating. X

ArabellaScott · 14/04/2024 10:43

Bobshark, I'm so sorry. Flowers

His motives matter in that we can try to avoid further attacks of this sort happening again in future.

PaperWalkAndTalk · 14/04/2024 10:44

A running theme with a lot of these attacks is "known to authorities", it doesn't matter what their original motivation was, their last motive was to harm and kill as many people as possible.

It seems like in a lot of Western nations we are obsessed with allowing dangerous individuals a lot of freedom, and never thinking of protecting those at risk.

tickabillatoon · 14/04/2024 10:46

I assume the witnesses who helped the baby would have had their clothes removed by police for forensics.

In not all, but the majority of cases where violent males "lose control" it is very specific and targeted. Even with mental health problems etc. When violent males kill each other, it's often with the back up that being part of a gang affords them.

We absolutely need to address the misogyny in our society that views women as men's possessions. Only feminism releases women from being owned by both left wing and right wing men. But there has been a huge anti feminist backlash and male-centred movements have worked hard to drive a wedge between younger and older women.
