Name badge...it's happening

Been told my new name badge with my pronouns on is coming next week. I haven't even been asked what my pronouns are... I don't intend to wear it because I don't hold the belief system it represents. But I now fear for my job/ stress levels are raised thinking about what's to come. Ignoring it is no longer an option...that has worked with email signatures....

What have you done?

Ask them how they know what your pronouns are.

Waffleson · 27/03/2024 16:34

Can you just write back and say you prefer not to have your pronouns on the badge? With no explanation. If asked say "it's what I prefer".

StephanieSuperpowers · 27/03/2024 16:36

If you were an maliciously compliant person, you could, in theory, send it back asking for your pronouns to be changed and then ask again when they send the new one and again and again until they give up and leave you alone.

Waitwhat23 · 27/03/2024 16:36

I would play them at their own game - and ask 'why have you unilaterally decided what my pronouns are? I haven't stated them to you and I might have decided recently that I'm non binary or use neo pronouns. I might even have pronouns that are fluid each day, depending how I'm feeling. All pronouns are valid! How very exclusionary of you to assume!'The whole thing is eye rolling, navel gazing nonsense.

Saintmariesleuth · 27/03/2024 16:38

If you aren't feeling able to complain, can you lose the badge, or keep accidentally leaving it at home?
My workplace launches various new initiatives, most of which are often quickly forgotten and never mentioned again

Just say it's none of anyone's business. Your pronouns are personal and its an invasion of your right to privacy if people ask you such a personal question.

I received a normal survey the other day asking what I was out of a list of cis woman, cis man, trans woman, trans man, non binary (and a few more I can't recall). I ended up putting "none of these". I'm not a "cis" woman; I'm just a woman. But that box wasn't an option to tick.

Fukuraptor · 27/03/2024 16:40

It is so much bullshit that they pretend pronouns are not sex based but then assume what they are based on what exactly? 🧐

Like everyone else I use the pronouns I/my to refer to myself. That's what I'd ask for on a badge if they insisted.

I'd go with this and / or with what @Walkingwashingmachine suggested:
Just say it's none of anyone's business. Your pronouns are personal and its an invasion of your right to privacy if people ask you such a personal question.

If you're concerned about their reaction I wouldn't give them any ammunition.

RhymesWithOrange · 27/03/2024 16:47

Ignore and don't wear your name badge. But if questioned I would tell the truth.

Circumferences · 27/03/2024 16:54

Wow. Do you work in the interpretive arts sector or a museum of ancient history or something? Who does this nowadays?

Lovelyview · 27/03/2024 16:57

Could you invent your own special pronoun that no-one's thought of yet. The infinity sign maybe?

DadJoke · 27/03/2024 16:58

Your pronouns are based on your sex. That's fine.

Waitwhat23 · 27/03/2024 17:04

Or perhaps nounself pronouns? Or emojiself pronouns?

All are valid, remember.

CantDealwithChristmas · 27/03/2024 17:06

Just explain that you don't subscribe to the belief system on which the ability to choose pronouns is based. Therefore you prefer not to have them. Just yur name.

Maya Forstater. Your refusal to take part in a cultic ritual at work is a protected belief.

TheHorneSection · 27/03/2024 17:07

As with others, just email or send it back and say you are not comfortable displaying your pronouns - you just don’t want to, and you won’t wear a badge that lists them.

Pronouns are based on sex. Absolutely. Glad we have finally agreed.

MultiplaLight · 27/03/2024 17:39

I'd go down the invasion of privacy, and how dare you assume my pronouns route.

Toseland · 27/03/2024 17:39

Tippex?

Its very weird him saying that isn't it.
I think it means if you change pronouns you change sex too.

So they've both presumed her sex & presumed her pronouns. Sounds a bit terfy

Luckydog7 · 27/03/2024 17:45

Look up THE list of possible pronouns zee/zero etc. pick the most batshit one. Politely correct them that they got your pronouns wrong by assuming they matched your sex. If they sound sceptical then tell them they are erasing your existence and need to educate themselves. If they quietly do it and give you the new badge then you've got a perfect silent protest. Sunlight for everyone while never putting yourself at risk.

This is an outstanding idea 💡 😁

menopausalmare · 27/03/2024 17:55

You can have so much fun with this😁👏. Play the game, new pronouns every week. If they get it wrong, they're transphobic. Please keep us posted.

CriticalCondition · 27/03/2024 18:00

Ask for an extra large badge with alternative pronouns and a little slidey thing so you can switch between them depending on how you're feeling.
