Name badge...it's happening

Isthisexpected · 27/03/2024 16:25

Been told my new name badge with my pronouns on is coming next week. I haven't even been asked what my pronouns are... I don't intend to wear it because I don't hold the belief system it represents. But I now fear for my job/ stress levels are raised thinking about what's to come. Ignoring it is no longer an option...that has worked with email signatures....

What have you done?

Exactly, don'ttalk about me in the third person,

He/she the Cat's Parent

+ + "Not Sir, it's Jet." + +

Are you sure that's not just him wanting to be informal?

No, apparently, that's the preferred pronoun.

My issue is I don't have a gender. In fact, I'd prefer people if they are talking about me in the third person - I.e. I'm not present because otherwise it would be fucking rude to use a pronoun - to decide for themselves what pronoun to use for me because I'm quite relaxed and don't mind people using whatever they like.

I'd be incredibly distressed and triggered if someone asked what my pronouns were as that forces me to reveal I don't have a preference.

Pronouns: n/a

I'm afraid for me even the presence of the word pronoun on a badge would be very upsetting, like making me out that I'm unusual for not indicating what they are 😔

Dumbledoreslemonsherbets · 27/03/2024 22:11

How are you supposed to know how to pronounce that? Ridiculous

Pronounced as
Skull/skulls/skullself.

It's no easier or harder than any other pronoun.

Or where you being sarcastic? Really cannot tell any more

If that's the case, I really hope he has nothing to do with English as Jet is a noun, not a pronoun.

Equally, Sir is a noun so replacing it with a pronoun in that example would be ridiculous. That would be the equivalent of saying "Excuse me He" instead of "Excuse me Sir".

I have told my manager than I don't want to display my pronouns as i dont have a 'preference' and that colleagues can call me by my name or 'you' when im there, and by whatever pronoun they feel appropriate when I'm not there. I have assured them that should my decision lead to me being 'misgendered' I will not make a complaint, so the company are not at risk. Luckily my manager was following an edict from on high in a fairly lack lustre manner so was fine with that.

Snowypeaks · 28/03/2024 12:59

Well done, @5128gap

hallouminatus · 28/03/2024 13:13

My ID badge now reads:

My preferred pronoun is

since I put a sticker over the pronouns which had been printed on the badge without anyone asking me about my preference. Nobody has commented. Maybe I'll change it if I can find a 🦕 sticker.

ChaoticBag · 28/03/2024 13:38

@hallouminatus
Excellent work. That was going to be my suggestion. Dinosaur sticker even better!

redalex261 · 28/03/2024 14:05

Dear fucking god. I really hope the DEI bampots at my workplace don’t latch onto this plan.

WTF? I thought it was a first name!

SinnerBoy · 28/03/2024 16:13

It's a new one for me, too.

Bollindger · 28/03/2024 16:28

Straight Female seemed to be a sex that causes offence.

MrsWhattery · 28/03/2024 19:47

I think a lot of people don’t fully grasp what is and isn’t a pronoun. And the way this whole insane situation involves telling people how they have to refer to you when not talking to you makes no sense. So it’s not surprising a lot of genderist types - who by definition are not prioritising logical or critical thought - end up thinking it’s about how you want to be addressed. And actually requiring someone to address you as Jet, or Your Excellency etc, makes no less sense that choosing “your” own pronouns.

Ask for an extra large badge with alternative pronouns and a little slidey thing so you can switch between them depending on how you're feeling.

😯

The Pip Bunce badge? I do like slidey name things tbh, have always been jealous of doctors sliding the room not/occupied on doors when you go in. I would be very happy to have a mini version Easter Grin

neopronounlist.carrd.co/#nonthemed

Find a good one from this ridiculous list. I'd go for 💀/💀s/💀self myself as that may cause a few issues with the printing 😬

I just looked through the "scary" list. I love that wit/witch/witchself comes with an added instruxtuon that it should only be used if you're a witch, but others like zom/zomb/zombself is ok to be used by anyone 😂

Can you just write back and say you prefer not to have your pronouns on the badge? With no explanation. If asked say "it's what I prefer".

This!

While there are some very amusing responses here, in practice what I would do if I was the op was wear the badge but put a plain sticker over the pronouns. Then probably nobody will notice but if they do say either you are not comfortable sharing your pronouns or that it doesn’t fit your belief system, depending on how open you are comfortable being.

So about 450 people are being given these. At a cost to the tax payer. It's come from on high. I can't imagine openly challenging it. A sticker could work. I haven't seen them so don't know if it will say in big print PRONOUNS: or just name them and how easy it will be to cover them. At the moment I'm leaning towards just never wearing it/losing it.

Anonymous tip-off to the Daily Mail or Telegraph ought to sort it out pretty quickly.

A relative of mine has had the "You're getting this badge - if you don't specify your pronouns, they will be assumed" email. She's pushed right back and asked for no pronouns. I've advised her to simply state that it's not her practice and if they start hinting at disciplinary action to point them at the Forstater case.
