Name badge...it's happening

Isthisexpected · 27/03/2024 16:25

Been told my new name badge with my pronouns on is coming next week. I haven't even been asked what my pronouns are... I don't intend to wear it because I don't hold the belief system it represents. But I now fear for my job/ stress levels are raised thinking about what's to come. Ignoring it is no longer an option...that has worked with email signatures....

What have you done?

I've sent her some resources gleaned from this place, should she need to argue the point further.

Isthisexpected · 29/03/2024 08:53

Anonymous tip-off to the Daily Mail or Telegraph ought to sort it out pretty quickly.

^ it's being proudly advertised!

Stressed about a name badge?? Only on Mumsnet. I hope you never have to deal with anything genuinely stressful.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 29/03/2024 08:56

Some people pride themselves on wilfully missing the point, don't they?

Well yes I imagine if you don’t value honesty and integrity it’s hard for you to understand how this is a problem.

'I am gender fluid, there are 74 genders to choose from. I may be all, I may be none. Can I have 74 badges please'

It's useful information so that you can refer to people correctly in the third person and not accidentally misgender them. It helps non-transgender gender non-conforming people, transgender people and non-binary people in particular. Singling them out would be discriminatory.

You base your pronouns on your sex. That's fine. That's what the badge will reflect.

I don't understand this post.

Why is it discriminatory for people who want to display preferred pronouns to have them on their badges and people who don't want to display preferred pronouns to not have them on their badges?

Yes the organisation I volunteer for has introduced new name badges with optional pronouns. Works for everyone. It’s really not hard.

The erosion of the rights of women and girls is absolutely everywhere in the world at the moment.

I'm so glad you've found this board so you can educate yourself. Have a read of what's happening with the rights of women under the Taliban, women under a Republican House in the USA and with hate crime legislation in Scotland. There are so many issues to learn about if you genuinely think this is about a name badge in a Mumsnet microcosm. If you have a daughter, with or without a penis, please stick around here and learn!

Many people don't like their employers trying to impose compelled speech in the form of pronouns. One example which relates to pronouns in email signatures -

https://www.holyrood.com/news/view,majority-of-scottish-government-civil-servants-say-theyll-never-add-pronouns-to-their-email-signatures

You'll see that the organisation in the link above were determined to 'encourage' their employees to do so, which smacks of the manipulation of a power imbalance

I'm sure that other posters could give similar examples.

But 'only on Mumsnet!!!', right?

Majority of Scottish Government civil servants say they'll never add pronouns to their email signatures

Internal poll reveals opposition to adding she/her, he/him, they/them to correspondence.

Say he/him and you want the pay rise that goes with being a man.

Alternatively, she/we so you are literally taking the piss.

No one is stressed about a name badge. If there is any stress involved its the stress of having to have these conversations and face disapproval or even disciplinary action, when all most of us want is to get on with our jobs without the need to constantly reference our 'gender' when many of us either don't believe in gender at all, or haven't the first clue what it even is. I personally couldn't care less whether people call me she/he/they when I'm not around. Calling me she or he doesn't make me any more or less of a woman, so I literally have no preference, why should I be forced to pretend I do? If its important to other people no one's stopping them from wearing the badge.

A relative of mine has had the "You're getting this badge - if you don't specify your pronouns, they will be assumed" email. She's pushed right back and asked for no pronouns. I've advised her to simply state that it's not her practice and if they start hinting at disciplinary action to point them at the Forstater case.

Isn't assuming pronouns against their narrative in the first place? What idiots!

Yes, very true. Because a lot of other forums will censor any criticism of this pronoun nonsense and sites like Linkedin try to railroad you into using them.

This level of condescending behaviour is off the scale.

@Ineedtoletoffsteam If that badge is genuine I salute you. I especially like fe/fi/fo/fum and fi/fae/farce but the whole list is admirable.

When you make it clear you don’t understand something and people try to explain it to you, you can take the opportunity to learn or you can consider yourself condescended to, your choice.

I think it is condescending to suggest that this kind of compelled speech is a trivial, "only on Mumsnet" type of problem.

It suggests you think Mumsnetters are silly women who don't have any real problems to deal with. Hopefully that wasn't your intention.

Is it very bad of me to be highly amused by such puerile [sic] suggestions?
