Name badge...it's happening

Been told my new name badge with my pronouns on is coming next week. I haven't even been asked what my pronouns are... I don't intend to wear it because I don't hold the belief system it represents. But I now fear for my job/ stress levels are raised thinking about what's to come. Ignoring it is no longer an option...that has worked with email signatures....

What have you done?

I don’t actually know anyone who wants to do this including trans people.

Opinions vary, but to my mind it's an "in group" vs "out group" thing more than anything.

The trans women I know have adopted very obviously feminine names such as Chloe and Amy.

If I saw someone with a name badge saying "Amy" on it, I would assume they wanted to be referred to using feminine pronouns.

I've told my employers that this is an absolute deal breaker for me.
I'll respect the wishes of anyone who comes in for healthcare and be civil like I would for anyone else but I will not put my pronouns on my email or name badge end of.......
They are so desperately short staffed they never push it. There is nobody else to do the work I do.

This sort of thing makes me appreciate the fact I'm retired now - I think I'd be sacked if I was to give my opinion on being asked to state my pronouns at work!

People have gone to tribunal, and won, for the right to have and manifest gender critical beliefs without risking their jobs. A refusal to "give preferred pronouns", in other words a refusal to dictate the pronouns used by others to refer to you, is a manifestation of gender critical beliefs. Being coerced or compelled to "give preferred pronouns" is a failure to respect the rights of gender critical people to manifest their beliefs and a failure to respect our right not to manifest a belief that we don't agree with.

It's the equivalent of me, as an atheist, refusing to wear a crucifix pendant.

That this has gone to tribunal proves that this is by no means "only on Mumsnet".

I think I'd go for passive resistance like 'forgetting' my badge every day, taking it off for spurious reasons and 'forgetting' to put it back on again etc.

Ask for it to be changed to nya/nyan (cat pronouns) if you dont mind being taken for a furry or he/him if you do. . Or go for Per/pers (short for person apparently and I suspect coined by someone taking the piss).

If asked about your gender reassignment just say you arent ready to talk about it and it is triggering to be asked.

Yeah, imagine if people objected to wearing badges! Say for instance a yellow triangle overlapped by a pink triangle! What’s the big deal?!

Add something irrelevant to the question but relevant to another protected characteristic eg "married", "Jewish", "straight" or "diabetic".

My pronouns are The Most Magnificent Imperiatrix/The Empress of My Universe, so conversations in my office are like ‘MagpiePi needs to sign off that report, I’ll email The Empress of My Universe and see if The Most Magnificent Imperiatrix can get it done before lunch.’

There's a science fiction novel that uses "per/pers" pronouns. I want to say it's by Ursula Le Guin, but it's so long since I read it I can't remember it's name or author. I'm sure there's someone with a better memory than mine.

@Crankywiddershins I know the book you mean, but can’t remember who wrote it. It was about a woman who was in a psychiatric unit but had episodes where she travelled to another world (another version of this world?) where everyone lived in gender neutral, egalitarian communities.

I wanted to update. The name badge came but my name was actually spelt wrong so I haven't worn it!

Now being asked to work on a project looking at equality in relation to accessibility of our service, with a focus on gender and just waiting for a suggestion of whether adding pronouns to our service leaflet will help🙄
