Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Anyone work for one of the big 4 consultancies who celebrated international women's day with a man taking about coming out as transgender?

I generally don't care to get that stressed about the transgender issue BUT this flabbergasted me. I actually found myself saying to the screen out load 'oh you have to be kidding!'

On what planet is that right!!! Can't say a word at work as it is very US centric and obviously they think that's fine.

Can't actually think of an IWD event near or round me that hasn't been dominated by Bunning and Strave TW being showcased as inspirational and role models..

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/03/2024 22:51

MNHQ just took down a 300 post thread about this because too many posts broke talk guidelines. Women aren't happy.

littlbrowndog · 08/03/2024 23:03

Say what ?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/03/2024 23:16

Thread in Chat. Basically asking if women would be offended by what had happened at her workplace today.

realdays · 08/03/2024 23:57

Oh I didn't see that one!!

Well I was offended and I'm far from a raving feminist and usually very 'live and let live' (and been an active contributor on mumsnet many years - I name change but mumsnet HQ can verify that.)

I just can't believe this was added to the usual ridiculous platitudes.

I'm a Director and I felt so angry. He actually stood there saying 'when I was known as J O E'. You poor thing, how was it coping with being a working pregnant woman, juggling returning to work with a baby, the glass ceiling and lesser pay because you are a woman, the start of the perimenopause, ...., oh hang on...

Almost as bad as the leader from our Indian firm saying she doesn't have enough Senior female leaders as the talent isn't there (when she refused to promote an amazing, talented woman last week for spurious reasons!).

This actually made me pretty furious. I'm bloody sick of being gaslit and it was so great to read hundreds of women feeling the same way.

@HeartofSaturdayNight @Ereshkigalangcleg

What guidelines were broken? Did they say?

Makes me mad too! We are all entitled to an opinion, surely!

I agree. Even mumsnet is stifling our views now. This is all becoming very worrying indeed. Women have fought long and hard to have their voice heard and now we are being silenced at every turn.

Speaking truthfully, I imagine and not prioritising male feelings. Happy IWD!

@ oh was that all! 😁😂

No doubt this thread will go the same way. Can't have women talking about the non-women celebrated on IWD.

An actual not-pretending-to-be-something-other-than-a-man man gave a talk to celebrate IWD for one local council in Northern Ireland "to make IWD more inclusive". It's like a bad Pythons sketch.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2024 00:35

There is no way I would sit through a self promoting monologue from one of these males. I'd suddenly have an attack of the runs, or a gas leak at home that I had to run away for. Or I'd have chucked a sickie for the day already.

HeartofSaturdayNight · 09/03/2024 00:42

Same. I'd hard pass it myself.

Remaker · 09/03/2024 01:18

One of my friends works for a large non profit healthcare and social care provider. Last year their poster person for IWD was a TW. This year their IWD post mentioned that they value all women AND MEN.

We can’t even have one fucking day to ourselves.

NitroNine · 09/03/2024 01:50

A whole entire day to ourselves?! What sort of entitled madness is that?!

Thread in Chat probably got zapped because there are people who watch MN obsessively for any sign Women Are Talking & report it INSTANTLY. Was there not lots of “why is this not in FWR?” wailing before deletion? Usually that happens if someone dares to mention That Which Must Not Be Named anywhere else on the site…

buckingmad · 09/03/2024 01:57

I left one of the big 4 after my first mat leave because it was impossible for me to go part time and still have a decent chance of promotion. Very male dominated department with virtually no working mums and the one that did had zero work life balance.

So this doesn’t surprise me at all!

There is no way that MN can hold the line on refusing to allow us to state someone's biological sex. The dam has broken. Being MN, though, it will take them at least a year to wake up to being behind the curve, and they will hack off thousands of their regular users in the process, all to placate a tiny cabal of misogynists, who cannot actually be placated, because women having freedom of speech is offensive to them.

GreatGateauxsby · 09/03/2024 03:30

I work in tech.
Have been enduring this since 2019!!!!!

At the first conference i attended there was a panel of 4....
the 3 women got approx 3 sentances each.
the 4th person on stage monopolised the panel and at one point burst. Into. Song. 🙄
No joking. Actually burst into song...

This was during the stunning and brave apex. Also lots of chat about "overcoming".... having grown up in the oppressive regressive country that is...... denmark!

Give me strength

It's not just women having freedom of speech, it's women having bodily autonomy and being able to say 'no' and not consent to be used however men decide they should be.

It's so depressing that MN delete threads because the TRAliban tell them to.

(Work in a school). We had slides to go through asking us to split the boys and girls and then to get them in their groups to the list the advantages of being their gender which we were to then discuss. (Reinforcing stereotypes or what!)

Coffeelovr · 09/03/2024 09:11

Which firm was this? Is that allowed?

FrancescaContini · 09/03/2024 09:12

I didn’t have to endure this thank God but I can see that many women are angry about it. Mass peaking moment?

How anyone can still claim not to see that the Emperor is stark bollock naked (I love what JKR said - is there a bag or badge in production yet?!) is beyond me but I have learned that the righteous are very stubborn when it comes to magical thinking.

Did you challenge this? It sounds farcical in its attempt to take children back to the 1950s.

I agree with this too. I was really enjoying loads of women from different areas of work saying NO.
