Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Anyone work for one of the big 4 consultancies who celebrated international women's day with a man taking about coming out as transgender?

I generally don't care to get that stressed about the transgender issue BUT this flabbergasted me. I actually found myself saying to the screen out load 'oh you have to be kidding!'

On what planet is that right!!! Can't say a word at work as it is very US centric and obviously they think that's fine.

There are views and opinions, and there are stating incorrect facts, and not just stating them once despite being corrected. But doubling down and resorting to 'you are all transphobes' when there's nowhere else to go. No wonder posters get frustrated.

Exactly @AccidentallyWesAnderson

ArabellaScott · 09/03/2024 11:51

Thread on a political representative insulting women had just been deleted.

ArabellaScott · 09/03/2024 11:51

Presumably because women were correctly sexing him.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2024 11:52

Which political representative @ArabellaScott?

One day to celebrate women. ONE BLOODY DAY. And it gets hijacked by the “stunning and brave” crew and their supporters.

I am absolutely sick of it. Sick to the back teeth.

Yes. And imagine having the balls to stand up there as a man and lecture women on the trials and tribulations of 'living as a woman' for 6 months. These men and their enablers are abusive wankers.

@winterplumage
I think the way the discussions tend to turn to women's fear of there being predatory, violent males among transwomen is in fact counterproductive.

It's not just counterproductive, it's often due to deliberate strawmanning by the TRA side. Been seeing it a lot in German Self-ID discussions this past year. Proponents of Self-ID reduce women's objections to concerns about safety which they then triumphantly proceed to dismantle. Never mind women's right to privacy and dignity in communal showers and changing rooms. Never mind OUR right to define our own identity and not be reduced to fluffy pink ladybrain. Never mind the fact that replacing sex as a legal category with gender identity also drives a coach and horses through the government's constitutionally mandated obligation to work towards real equality of women.

Yes, it's worrying as it ends up with gender critical women being seen as overly-fearful of men or leads to their being misunderstood as Trump-like proponents of gender-divisions (rather than safe spaces).

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/03/2024 11:56

It's a dominance display.

Look at this. Lyft (a bit like Uber, have used them in the states) have an option where you can request a female driver. I imagine this is useful for women traumatised by men, parents sending lone girls etc. This driver chooses to deliberately seek out those specific women and girls.

Ah thanks @ArabellaScott 🙄

ArabellaScott · 09/03/2024 11:57

Women can't be shut up forever, you know.

You can report report report, and MN can delete delete delete.

We're still here and more and more of us are not going to wheesht anymore.

GailBlancheViola · 09/03/2024 12:00

The trouble was that the voices being heard were mostly people troll hunting and indulging in personal attacks. If you choose to break MN rules and get zapped, that's not them silencing you, that's you asking for it.

I was on that thread and you and Flickersy are talking bollocks.

You need to take it up with MNHQ then, because they can see the posts and they obviously disagree.

ArabellaScott · 09/03/2024 12:02

I mean do keep on trying your best to silence women. How's that working for you so far?

I'm not trying to silence women. I am a woman (yes, the old fashioned cunty kind).

And I will report personal attacks / troll hunting etc if I see it. Why wouldn't I?

ScrotumGantry · 09/03/2024 12:04

Thanks for the reminder of yesterday's Chat "doctors assign birth genders but they might be wrong" poster.

I don't consider pointing out that's not what actually happens in the UK to be troll hunting or a personal attack. He was just wrong.

Oblomov24 · 09/03/2024 12:06

The other thread was deleted? What a shame.

I too was very cross. What a joke.

RandySavage · 09/03/2024 12:10

I predict this thread will be the next to be closed.

It’s as if somebody is making it their work.

CatChant · 09/03/2024 12:17

Still unsurprised and still infuriated at the arrogance and absurdity of giving a biological male a platform to speak for women on IWD.

Wasn't talking to you.

ILikeDungs · 09/03/2024 12:33

Not about a specific thread but about MN in general, I can imagine that when a poster with a seriously weird understanding of a position they are trying to bolster keeps posting weird shit making their argument look fundamentally foolish...well, some other posters might want the thread to die.

And I never report. Or not yet at least! Could be wrong of me but I think posts should stand.

flyingbuttress43 · 09/03/2024 12:48

Sorry, late to the thread. OP, I see that you said you generally don't care to get that stressed about the gender issue - a sentiment we often hear expressed.
I can only say it needs every woman to "get that stressed" because this is a massive massive issue that will change women's rights and their whole lives if we, as a sex, don't stand up to be counted.

FFS everyone who cares if they are called a transphobe or a bigot, just stop caring - now. It's just a cheap insult thrown around by people who have no logical argument. I've had these terms tossed at me a few times. My response is always the same "And...?" accompanied by a querying look that invites them to expand on their view. They don't expect that response and usually either waffle something meaningless or back down.

If women don't stand up and be counted we are contributing to our own downfall.

ThreeEggOmlette · 09/03/2024 12:50

I didn't see the other thread, but I did enjoy a 'round table' to celebrate IWD hosted by my captured government organisation and would love a rant here...

They'd adopted the #inspireinclusion tagline.
And I was mildly cheered to watch actual female women (multiple ND+disabled+pansexual/black/menopausal) talk about how their intersecting challenges affected their work - and almost all were to do with their sex e.g. person with ASD/ADHD had issues because diagnostic tools are for boys etc.

Low and behold, pan person pipes up that we must include trans women on IWD and then the chat goes wild with 'be kind' 'this is such an amazing message' 'if only everyone could be like us' platitudes (note: no notable bursts of admiration for the actual stories from the panel) and she starts talking about consideration for trans men who may 'still own a uterus'.

Look, I'm happy to discuss transmen on IWD as they are a female subset, but you don't get to fucking sideline it all saying trans women should be included AND THEN say transmen should be included too. That means everyone's included it's just another day & fuck all to do with women.

And what I hate most is that I felt I couldn't point out this glaring error for fear of my work being affected - I have to build rapport with ppl cross service.

I'm utterly sick of the simpering to the mighty peen & personal politics at work.

One of my friends works for a large non profit healthcare and social care provider. Last year their poster person for IWD was a TW. This year their IWD post mentioned that they value all women AND MEN.

We can’t even have one fucking day to ourselves.

I posted earlier in the week about my local council, who think a whole months worth of LGBT activities, events, posters and back patting celebration is appropriate, but offered one day to celebrate half the worlds population on IWD, where the keynote event turned out to be a TWO HOUR event on Friday evening from 7.00 to 9.00 thus excluding women without childcare, women working shifts, Jewish women, and all women who have worked hard all week and just want to take their bras off and sink onto the sofa with a g and t rather than get their glad rags on for two hours of council jollity.
