Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Anyone work for one of the big 4 consultancies who celebrated international women's day with a man taking about coming out as transgender?

I generally don't care to get that stressed about the transgender issue BUT this flabbergasted me. I actually found myself saying to the screen out load 'oh you have to be kidding!'

On what planet is that right!!! Can't say a word at work as it is very US centric and obviously they think that's fine.

But we all need to spend the 1 day a year dedicated to inspirational women, hearing about a bloke who grew his hair long, changed his name and started wearing floaty skirts.

It's pretty unbelievable isn't it. Clothes do not make a woman. What has happened to people and why are so many humouring this? It's almost as though women don't matter....

Yes, they are men. #JustSayMen

If transwomen are willing to accept a third space across toilets, changing room, sports, prisons, rape crisis centres etc, I'm happy to call them transwomen.

I wish people would understand that the political priorities of transwomen do not intersect with our broad based political allegiance as the class of women, so why should they represent us on IWD or in any political forum?

I have absolutely no problem with trans people that accept the need for a third space. I'd be happy with that as a solution that respects both trans rights and women's rights. If they are unwilling and persist in trying to usurp the space of actual women, I will call them men.

Leafstamp · 09/03/2024 20:46

@andforthatminuteablackbirdsang third spaces will never be enough for some of the people campaigning for so called trans rights. Because this is acknowledging that TW are in fact not women.

And it is for that reason that I will never call them trans women or transwomen.
The word woman is taken.

Good lord, you couldn't make it up, the lack of logic you describe there with the transmen and transwomen both being women!

It's the "non-men" thing all over again. And don't get me started on FLINTAs which was all over my Twitter TL today. Why do we have to focus on asexuals on IWD?

Aviee · 09/03/2024 21:16

Which one was this? EY?

realdays · 10/03/2024 01:57

Well that was a lot of responses.

I'm glad so many women feel how I do and I wish I could speak up but I'd be seen as the bigot and I need my job (or actually I think they'd win again.)

I think Mumsnet need to remember who drives the traffic on this site. If they make it too hard to be heard, we will fuck off somewhere else and then they’ll be sad. We will convene elsewhere - Mumsnet, you have been warned.

(Work in a school). We had slides to go through asking us to split the boys and girls and then to get them in their groups to the list the advantages of being their gender which we were to then discuss. (Reinforcing stereotypes or what!)

Wtaf? That's against all guidelines

I am becoming more sure that men can't 'earn' the right to be called any sort of women. Ever. It's a bit like MN letting us call TW rapists and paedophiles 'he' but the 'nice' TW who hasn't been convicted of anything we have to call 'she'. Bollocks to that. They are males and a subset of the male sex class. Nothing to do with us.
I do use TW but I really think that TIM is more appropriate.

Hats off to @Cailin66 - not sure I could cope with being in the belly of the EDI machine.

Been away for a few hours and this thread has grown! Lots of names I don't recognise - and I'm deeply heartened to know my feelings are shared by many. It's really heartening to see.

To the woman-hating posters on this thread: I'm genuinely sorry your personal pain has twisted into sexism but we won't be quiet. You can't bend reality to suit your internal fantasy.

Every deleted thread on this topic just encourages more posters to find the Naughty Corner (FWR) and educate themselves.

It’s not easy but luckily I have a good record on actual equality including gay rights. My job is very secure so that helps. But I can’t yet give forthright views, so I just do it subtly. A gay colleague asked me directly if I was a TERF. He himself is such a coward he said he refuses to discuss/debate, being young and taken in by this cuit, he does not see the danger to gay men like him. Another gay colleague challenged us to discuss, I took him up on it to find out he believes men can become women. He’s an adult aged about 30. So uneducated he had no clue women can’t beat men in sports.

HeartofSaturdayNight · 10/03/2024 11:12

Your workplace is very lucky to have you @Cailin66 - I've a similar background and I've found colleagues, particularly gay and lesbian colleagues, are more likely to assume my concerns come from bigotry rather than genuine concern. I find it so depressing and the lack of nuance or critical thinking - in the face of mounting evidence - quite astounding.

The A in FLINTA is for agender, according to various sites on Google. Nothing to do with asexuality.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2024 19:11

Why would you focus on "agender people" either?

DaffodilsAlready · 10/03/2024 19:37

I have no idea, I was simply saying asexuals are not meant here 🤷🏻‍♀️
Although if I was to hazard a guess, it is trying to cover all bases of how women might identify from people who believe sex defines you as a woman through to those who may define themselves as non-binary or be intersex females. Google tells me it comes from the German and I am not German (and to be honest, until they get rid of legalised prostitution and mega brothels, I don’t want to take lessons from Germany on how to be feminist or inclusive). Of course one could quite simply say that female or woman does the job quite well.
I was simply pointing out that it is nothing to do with asexuality.

DaffodilsAlready · 10/03/2024 19:38

Although I would personally not refer to an ‘intersex female’, the acronym implies this.

MoltenLasagne · 10/03/2024 19:39

If all of us had the courage to raise a polite objection, I believe we'd quickly see a change.

A few years ago, my work booked ex-boxer Kellie Maloney to come speak about "their journey". Maloney who had openly blamed gender confusion for abusing KM's then wife.

I complained to the organisers and the event got pulled with a promise to improve vetting for future speakers. I was so nervous about speaking up, but I got thanks and an apology and not the condemnation I expected.

realdays · 10/03/2024 19:56

@MoltenLasagne I really think 🤔 f I said anything it would be negative for me which is sad. They'd definitely see me as the bigot. We have a female Global COO, she seems very enlightened, I can only conclude maybe she got caught up and ironically also didn't want to push back on whoever advised her it was a good idea.
