we now hear word of a Canadian proposal to impose house arrest on someone who is believed likely to commit a hate crime in the future – even if they have not done so already.

Chersfrozenface · 10/03/2024 19:28

You'd think by now a friend would have prised their phone and computer out of their hands, unplugged their wifi and taken them out for a break from all this.

@Froodwithatowel you're presuming that whoever you're referring to here actually has a friend.

SabrinaThwaite · 10/03/2024 19:42

I wonder if, for someone whose career has been quietly sliding into obscurity, this is a way to keep relevant.

LarkLane · 10/03/2024 19:42

But you need a genuine friend who cares for your welfare to do such a thing Frood. A friend who cares enough to tell you that you need to step away and give it a rest.

IW's so called friends seem to just want to encourage IW on to total implosion.

I'd be seriously concerned for a friend's mental heath and well being if I saw such constant, obsessive, vitriolic, behaviour.

I'm waiting for the IW see what you made me do event as IW escalates.

IW is a very troubled individual imo.

Minority Report is happening in this world, in our time.

Just because it's 40 years beyond 1984 doesn't mean it isn't now and won't always be 1984.

Rainbow - they were very near it with the proposed Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill.

TBF, ‘Surbiton’ does sound made up.

I agree.

On the Threadreader unroll, there was a tweet from IW saying that IW had written an article on whatever the subject in hand was, and did anyone want it?

Seems that IW may fancy IWself as a writer. Oddly enough I haven’t seen IW on the panel of Times staff writers but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.

I saw this particular episode.

IIRC there was a first year drama student arguing the toss with Sir R at one point, because obviously people who dress up to pretend to be someone else on a stage or in front of a camera know more about sex and gender than world-respected biologists who have written papers, made ground-breaking advances in fertility treatment and examined the topic from every angle for over half a century.*

Most of us would still be wiping the egg off our faces after such a confrontation, but I think this young woman was too unintelligent to recognise that she had lost the argument and looked very pleased with herself.

(Though ironically Sir R seriously considered a career in the theatre and left clinical medicine to work as a theatre director. He was pretty good at it and won a National Directors' Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1969. Happily for humanity he returned to medicine.)

I'm amazed he didn't lose the will after that encounter.

So IW is a real woman not a trans woman apparently but on First Dates recently ahe told her date she was trans

Does IW honestly think no one knows they was born with a penis?

Edited

That male pattern baldness at the temples is a dead give-away, IMO.

Oh, language...

One of the videos on this thread (can’t remember which, sorry) included IW pointing out that we have created a demeaning word “transwomen” which is problematic because it’s a made up word.

I wanted the interviewer to ask about the word ciswomen. Sadly, this didn’t happen.

I realise this is just one of a great many examples of the delusional narcissism, but wanted to get it off my chest nonetheless.

IIRC it wa the TRAs themselves who originally used the word "transwoman" ("It's yer actual Latin! It's. prefix!! Transalpine Gaul!!! Educate yourselves!!!! BIGOTS!!!!!*), .. . then it cunningly morphed from a prefix to a faux-adjective - and because it's an "adjective" it describes the noun "woman" doesn't it? Just like "black" or "tall" or "French" or "red-haired" does. Except of course, it doesn't. It "describes" a MAN.

*(And that makes YOU "cis" whether you like it or not! TRANSPHOBES!!!!!")

What? Nothing makes me "cis". Last time I came across cis and trans was when I learned A Level chemistry. They're called Z and W now.

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/03/2024 20:09

Snowypeaks · 10/03/2024 18:38

Absolutely not "it" - "it" is used for a baby or child whose sex is unknown, but never for an adult. She, he or they ("they" to refer hypothetical adult/adult whose sex is unknown) are the only options.

Excuse me!

What about "xe:, "fae", "per", "meow", etc?

😠

My cat says he is literally physically sick at the thought of someone taking his meow and using it to describe their genital belongings.

E and Z

Entgegen and Zusammen

However, we do still use cis and trans, probably more commonly than E Z isomerisation.

Re: JK Rowling is right: a trans woman is not a woman, and it’s not wrong to say so
The Harry Potter author is a heroine for sticking to her principles in the face of vile insults and misogyny

I should have guessed Canada would go beyond Scotland's abandoned proposal.

If stories of gender-critical women being hounded out of their jobs, their universities, and in the recent case of Newcastle United fan Linzi Smith, their football club, aren’t already disturbing enough, we now hear word of a Canadian proposal to impose house arrest on someone who is believed likely to commit a hate crime in the future – even if they have not done so already.
The proposed clause in Canada’s new Online Harms Bill would see suspected “hate criminals” forced to wear an electronic tag and banned from going outside. In Willoughby’s world, that would include anyone who thinks she’s a bloke.

In relation to this part of the Act?

The government plans to add online hate speech as a form of discrimination under the law and allow people to file complaints against individuals posting such content to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
It would also make changes to the Criminal Code, including by increasing the maximum punishment for four hate propaganda offences.
For example, someone found guilty of advocating genocide could face life imprisonment, up from five years in prison.
The government is also looking to create a new hate crime offence that could be applied to every other offence, instead of only listing it as an aggravating factor during sentencing.

DrBlackbird · 10/03/2024 20:38

So an Act largely designed to target social media platforms has snuck this in with it. Proving that the political left can be as authoritarian as the political right…

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2024 20:38

the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Who let Yaniv persecute self employed WOC in a stupid trumped up process that made a laughing stock of them and the country around the world.
