Right wingers, meant as an insult, are to blame for ruining Park Run, not men in frocks.

Voices must be heard, even if this is an opinion piece. This mad ideology only continues whilst we allow it and not speaking up is a CHOICE to allow it to keep happening.

Why have rightwingers made even parkrun a battleground for trans people? | Jonathan Liew

When non-competitive, mass-participation jogging is annexed by the culture warriors, it’s clear there are other agendas at play

Look at this snippet from today's Guardian First Edition email. First sentence even more inflammatory than the original.

"Why have rightwingers made even parkrun a battleground for trans people?"

They push gender ideology onto society and then have the audacity to question why 'the right' is pushing back. Same nonsense as claiming the right are just in a culture war - they only can be because the left is pushing all these things, that the right fights against, in the first place.

The irony is that right wingers have only belatedly taken up this issue.

Back in 2019, Sean Ingle was writing about it IN THE GUARDIAN https://amp.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2019/jul/22/current-impasse-transgender-athletes, so information was clearly available, but Jonathan Liew was telling women to stop being hysterical and specifically Martina Navratilova that she shouldn’t expect sport to be fair.

But 2019 was also the year of the notorious missing Penny Mordaunt Mumsnet web chat and for years the Tory party line was that ‘so called feminists’ could be ignored. Tories tend to lack interest in rights issues.

The difference now is that the Tories are exploiting an obvious open goal, and Parkrun apparently pay attention to right wing think tanks and their actions affect men. Before that it was just ‘Blah, blah, blah women’

How can we end the current impasse over transgender athletes? | Weightlifting | The Guardian

One side believes women’s sport must be protected, the other that gender identification trumps all. Debate is needed to find a fair solution

Is it even legal to have a newspaper article with so many assertions that can't be backed up as fact? If it were in the Opinion section that would be one thing, but it's the Sports section.

It's alternative facts. Stopping TWs from recording their times as 'women'=banning them.

That is just blatantly wrong - Nobody has asked to ban anyone - just for fair categories.

Exactly. It really illustrates that this is a political movement that wants reality to be based around feelings (but only a special group of people's feelings, everyone else can either enable nicely or get to fuck) rather than facts.

The hyperbolic manipulation and misrepresentation to play on people's sentimentality is getting more teenaged by the day. It's verbal door slamming and flouncing with shouts of 'you've never loved me!' when you're left standing there muttering "I only said could you put your mug in the dishwasher".

To be fair, I have twice accidentally sent an email when I have leant across my laptop and my nipple pressed the send key.

😂

My boobs have never been big enough to accidentally do anything like this - except when I was breastfeeding, when they were like footballs, but I was too exhausted to even with the computer on in this halcyon days.

I've complained, and finally cancelled my subscription, the article is absurd as well as offensive. Right wing my arse.

@GrammarTeacher

ParkRun is now back to its roots. The records don't matter. You should only be competing against yourself. ParkRun is a run for everyone

Completely agree, well said

I'm still laughing at the description of Policy Exchange as "mysterious".

What's mysterious about them? He makes it sound as if they are some sinister organisation backed by foreign actors set on undermining the British state. As opposed to a bog-standard think tank who have published an entirely reasonable, well-researched report on women's participation in sport, with endorsement from Martina Navratilova, Daley Thompson and Sharron Davies.

Who's going to tell Daley he's a gullible idiot being exploited by this sinister right-wing organisation? Surely Jonathan Liew would be the ideal person to do it. I would love to see how that conversation goes.

What’s mysterious is how we got the place where someone who writes like this is encouraged to

...from a parent of a teen recovering from a 2am meltdown...where asking them to be quieter led to door slamming and the whole block being woken up.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/02/2024 10:24

Please can you be quiet so you don't wake other people up.(please can you compete with your sex do you don't hurt female competitors/expose your penis in the changing rooms/stop females competing fairly)

leads to door slamming and shouting and more waking people up, (claims that they are being literally killed , death and rape threats and officials getting punched)

Very teen behaviour, and entitled abusive male behaviour rolled into one. (I used to live with one of those too)

I've finally cancelled my subscription too, and I wrote to tell them why. Have been wresting with this for a while, but being actively insulted in the name of make-believe by a newspaper to which I voluntarily gave money was just a step too far.

Any recommendations for a newspaper where left-wing women aren't derided? Can't give money to Murdoch so the Times is out, despite its good work on this topic.

Here's my letter of complaint in case of use to anyone. Fucking awful piece of trash article.

"Dear Editor,
I find the article published in your Sports section this morning :"Why have rightwingers made even parkrun a battleground for trans people?" incredibly problematic and offensive.

As a VERY MUCH LEFT WING feminist woman, the idea that fighting for the equal rights of women in sport is in any way remotely 'right wing', or a 'battleground for trans people', is misguided at best.

The "battle" isn't about trans people, it's about women - women have a right to same sex sport.

The article is full of hyperbolic misinformation - where it starts by claiming the fight is about "stopping 16-year-old girls from competing in sports" - WRONG; 16 year old biological females have nothing to do with the Parkrun debate, that this is about "erasing trans women from sport" - WRONG; there's nothing stopping transwomen from competing in male categories and many advocate for the creation of a third category), the article again insults concerned women calling them "genital inspectors" - WRONG; not only is this more offensive name-calling of women who have concerns, but fails to acknowledge that people who have completed male puberty do not need their genitals inspected - they are stronger, bigger, have a different gait, different facial features etc. AND THIS IS WHAT GIVES THEM THE ADVANTAGE - testosterone or not.

The article is FULL of sympathy for trans women, but fails to see that this "tiny minority" competing in women's sport has a devastating impact on THE VAST MAJORITY of women competing against them.

My issues with the piece are confounded by the fact that it was written by a man; I see this as no less offensive than a white person writing an article minimising or belittling the struggle of ethnic minorities. The article is absolutely dripping with misogyny.

The Guardian must reassess their stance on this topic and pull its head out of the sand. This is not a right-wing, left-wing issue. The Guardian is appeasing its men's rights activist and trans rights activist readers at the cost of alienating left-wing women.

Regards,"

I love this. Totally nails it.

The main misogyny at the Grun lies in the fact they are commissioning these articles written by men instead of the articles on other subjects written by women.

Every time a man gets paid for something like this, that's money that a female journalist didn't get for coverage on something more pertinent/interesting. That's a recent clip he can use to get NUJ membership that a woman couldn't have.

It becomes a self-referential echo chamber due to selection bias. And I bet the biased selectors (editors) don't like hearing it and just bat away criticism, that's what the Beeb always do, too.

RoyalCorgi · 15/02/2024 10:57

UltraLiteLife · 15/02/2024 10:28

There are two reasons why I love JKR. (Actually, there are LOADS of reasons I love JKR, but let's just stick with two.)

One is that whenever she intervenes on issues like this, she always demonstrates that she is much cleverer and funnier than the hapless male idiot she's arguing with. You almost feel sorry for them, because it's not a fair fight - but then Jonathan Liew doesn't believe in fair fights, so sympathy is limited.

The other is that her comments always get picked up by the press. If she hadn't said anything, this would have been a massive Twitter spat, and nothing more. But as soon as she said something, you knew it would be reported in the Mail, Telegraph etc. I assume this is because JKR makes good copy, and people will always click on a story that has JKR in it. Probably does wonders for the publication's SEO too.

Edited

But the mystifying thing is that it isn’t a complete echo chamber. As I have pointed out Sean Ingle has been writing well researched, fair articles in the Guardian for years.

On the other hand Liew’s article doesn’t stand up to any scrutiny.

You don’t have to have any opinion on Policy Exchange to see that this is low hanging fruit. It’s obviously unfair, and while Liew is on record saying that’s fine, the law and funders might feel differently.
it’s a bit like antisemitism in the Labour Party. The Daily Mail are politically motivated to make hay out of the recent mess in Rochdale, but that doesn’t mean it’s right wing to say Labour messed up.

duc748 · 15/02/2024 11:56

Good that JKR homed in on that earlier piece by Liew, where he imagined the serried ranks of trans podium winners stretching out forever... 🙄He really is a piece of work.

To be fair, even the Mail calls Policy Exchange 'right-wing'. Doesn't make everything they say a lie, though.
