Right wingers, meant as an insult, are to blame for ruining Park Run, not men in frocks.

Complain here:

Voices must be heard, even if this is an opinion piece. This mad ideology only continues whilst we allow it and not speaking up is a CHOICE to allow it to keep happening.

Why have rightwingers made even parkrun a battleground for trans people? | Jonathan Liew

When non-competitive, mass-participation jogging is annexed by the culture warriors, it’s clear there are other agendas at play

I can't find it. I am crap at Twitter.

I went to her thread and searched.

Lottapianos · 14/02/2024 12:44

JKR - she's bloody brilliant. Nailed it

The danger of trying to convince someone they are right wing because they disagree with you is that you succeed.

UltraLiteLife · 14/02/2024 12:45

JK Rowling's response to the author:

Your previous remarks leave no room for mystery about your own special interest in this subject. Like many ‘progressive’ misogynists, you seem delighted to have found an acceptable outlet for your disdain for women’s and girls’ sport. We see you, Jonathan.

Not reading that but they can bog off

I hope someone starts taking dicks who calls women far right to court for liable and reputational damage.

Even in the guardian, the comments aren't open.

The Guardian opens comments for crucial topics like restaurant reviews and recipes.

Liew must be feeling very righteous after posting that illiterate screed against women. Floating high on a little cloud of that good old left-wing sexism that’s made such a resurgence recently - "Look, addressing women’s issues comes after the revolution, Comrade; now go and make us all a nice cuppa, darlin’, while we discuss dialectical materialism for a bit."

He strikes me as the sort that doesn’t value women’s sport in the first place so doesn’t care if it has to suffer disruption from cheats.

I see the Queen/JKR has given him her opinion on his piece/X thread. Sorry I don’t know how to link!

She's relatively polite.

So many great comments under JKR's. I did like this one:

"If anyone wonders what left wing male supremacy rhetoric looks like, it's that"

#OperationLetThemSpeak in full flow today in the Guardian.

Haven't RTWT yet, but my first thought was, it's Jonathan Liew, he's a prick anyway. I've come across his smug and poorly argued pieces before (including on MN, I think).

theilltemperedclavecinist · 14/02/2024 13:18

How deluded do you have to be, to think that if transgender athletes swept the board in women's sports, the reaction of the world would be "how inspiring! You go, girls"?

Yes, misogyny is rife. But people who like sport tend to have quite strong ideas about cheating don't they?

Wait! What would Joey Barton say?

My favourite line:

It does! It really does! Is there a "flagsthatsuck dot com"?

Ah yes, The disgraceful piece highlighted by Sophie Walker linked to upthread; I'd read that before.
It's quite breath-taking in its simplicity, isn't it? Back in your box, you old-fashioned cunty women!

MILTOBE · 14/02/2024 13:31

Absolutely love JKR. "We see you." He should take heed of that.

RandySavage · 14/02/2024 13:33

Liew is a poor sports writer and a weak man, but at least he has openly admitted he believes what so many TRAs secretly think: women don’t matter.

So often we have to argue against rubbish like ‘but TWAW’; ‘there’s no evidence’; ‘it’ll only be a few, so why worry’; ‘why would it be dangerous?’

Liew has openly stated: “let’s say …they [transwomen] dominate everything they touch … why would that be bad?”

There it is, right out in the open - it does not matter if men dominate women’s sport. Now we know what the real argument is.

lonelywater · 14/02/2024 13:35

he even manages to shoehorn in the "legislative erasure" of trans people. I cannot put a fag paper between him and Talcum. These people are fucking nutters who should be in homes. I also could not imagine the graun could sink any lower. Wrong again.

Yes, there's something to be said for the ones who'll say the quiet part out loud.

He really does deserve to have that quote hung around his neck for good.

thedankness · 14/02/2024 13:39

I've written in if anyone wants any ideas for a letter.

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the above article 'Why have rightwingers made even parkrun a battleground for trans people?' by Jonathan Liew, published 14/2/24.

Like the right-wing think tank Jonathan Liew decries, he too could be accused of commandeering women’s rights activism in a reactionary response to the political Right. In the UK (we are not in the USA and imported culture war rhetoric has no place here) women protesting the right to fair sport are across the political spectrum. If the “problem”, as Liew writes, is that “malign actors” capitalise on women’s concerns that “trans rights are an extension of the patriarchy they have long been fighting”, it suggests that women's fears in themselves are legitimate. Perhaps the Left could address these concerns? Many women remain unconvinced by the Labour leader who, whether through ignorance or cowardice, is unable to state basic biology. Maybe the Left should get their own house in order before blaming the Right of rank opportunism.

I believe that Liew ascribes such little value personally to women’s right to fair sport (https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/general/athletics/caster-semenya-news-gender-martina-navratilova-trans-cas-jonathan-liew-column-a8792861.html), that he is unable to understand this as the sole cause of women’s protest. Instead he concludes supporters are, in fact, motivated by malign intent to “legislate trans people out of existence”. Perceiving a cruel political agenda is a useful deployment against listening to women.

He’s got one thing right. This isn’t just about Parkrun, or sport, but about women’s fundamental rights to equality. It’s apparent where the Left stands.

Yours faithfully.

The prejudice of those who argue against trans, intersex & DSD athletes

This week, DSD athlete Caster Semenya has fought the decision to set a limit on allowable testosterone levels for athletes. And, for some, this is the final stroke of the Doomsday Clock, the opening of the floodgates

sometimes it can be difficult to see the wood fur the trees. Here we have one of the Guardian sports writers saying across a number of pieces that women’s sport doesn’t matter. I expect rank misogyny from the pub boor, but the Guardian? It has badly lost its way.
