Disclosure of non binary pronouns leads to less favourable employer response

It seems most employers have not embraced the TQ despite their corporate virtue signalling. Recruiting managers are giving the They/Thems a swerve.

I’m not surprised!

SidewaysOtter · 31/01/2024 21:50

I’m not surprised either. I should imagine employers see it as a big red flag and a HR nightmare galloping towards them.

Crankywiddershins · 31/01/2024 21:53

Maybe they've been following the various employment tribunals surrounding gender and decided it's not worth the risk?

StarlightLime · 31/01/2024 21:54

Good.

Backinthedress · 31/01/2024 21:57

Wait... she added her pronouns after reading this research that showed it biased people against her? Some people. Tchuh.

Yep, she’s really sticking it to the man by…..disadvantaging herself

I doubt it as she’s based in the US so I suspect the survey was too. My suspicion is that the managers assume people claiming a NB identity are going to be difficult to work with

Goodness, I can't imagine why employers might want to swerve attention seeking naval gazers.

PurpleSparkledPixie · 31/01/2024 22:01

Non binary = me me me on steroids. Most bosses just want the work doing so they can profit off their sweat, blood and tears. Can't earn company money from just tears.

Crankywiddershins · 31/01/2024 22:02

@HermioneWeasley good point. I forget the world exists sometimes.

Was about to type that almost word for word. Would have also added self obsessed.

Waitwhat23 · 31/01/2024 22:11

The whole 'non binary' thing makes me think of the Bluey episode 'Library' where Muffin thinks she can do whatever she wants because her parents have told her that she's 'the most special kid in the whole world'. Her Dad suddenly has an epiphany after seeing her behaviour and has to gently tell her that although she is the most special kid in the whole world to her parents, she's just a normal kid to everyone else.

I don't think that those who claim they are non binary have quite worked that out yet.

I think she’s answering her own question there.
A workplace is not just somewhere for an activist to hang out during the day and use the free internet and photo copier to push their own agenda on the captive audience who can’t complain. It’s not a sixth form common room.

IdleAnimations · 31/01/2024 22:36

I shouldn’t relish in this, but I am because it shows that the silent majority cannot be bothered with this madness and see it as a warning of a possibly toxic person.

However, I am also a firm believer in blind CVs for larger corporations to prevent discrimination or unconscious biases. I feel a tad conflicted in many ways because the pronouns on CV prevent you hiring a possible problem, but can also impact those who think they’re just doing something nice. Tricky…

Blind shortlisting would not weed out the “I thought it was a nice thing to do/the recruitment consultant said to put them in” crowd.

But I should imagine that the blue-haired die-hard pronouners/I’m hemisexual but only on Wednesdays brigade are going to make themselves obvious at interview stage.

Waitwhat23 · 31/01/2024 22:43

I’m hemisexual but only on Wednesdays

I typed hemisexual into Google, hoping that you were just taking the piss but no, it's a thing....

Boiledbeetle · 31/01/2024 22:45

Can't think why they'd give them (oh it actually works in this sentence!) a swerve at all!

AnnaKing81 · 31/01/2024 22:45

I'm not surprised either!

If I see it on an email I assume that they're a bit of a tw*t!

LaviniasBigBloomers · 31/01/2024 22:49

I had to tell a particularly pronoun-focused group of people once that the reason I both don't use pronouns and have shortened my name into a more gender neutral form is that my industry is NOTORIOUS for paying women less than men. Why would I remind people I was female, so they could pay me less? Didn't go down well but hey, at least the research is proving me right...

I’ve also just googled hemisexual, but I'm no clearer on WTF it is and why any of us should take it seriously 🙄

Well the clear meaning is someone who likes to think of themselves as open minded and queer, but if actually faced with the genitalia of someone the same sex as themselves would go a strange shade of green and hastily exit the room.

I’m intrigued as to whether you shortened your name to “Lav” Grin
